A rust corduroy mudroom bench cushion, and the buyer project behind it
Maggie reads a blue entryway where one warm cushion does all the work, then retells a buyer's thin notched pad, from the first question to the finished drawing.
The quick answer
For a cool-painted mudroom, choose a bench cushion from the opposite side of the color wheel, such as rust corduroy against blue walls, and run it the full length of the lid, flush at the front. Corduroy's ribbed pile hides the creases of a seat used for pulling on boots, and a removable cover handles damp jeans.

SavePinned by Maggie in the blue hallway
Five pins, from the rust seat and the shaker chest to the coat hooks, the boot tray and the washable blue rug.

- Rust corduroy cushion
Orange sits opposite blue on the color wheel, so this seat finishes a cool hallway.
- Shaker panel chest
The cushion runs the full lid length and stops flush at the front.
- Coats on hooks
Hang hooks high enough that coat hems clear the cushion top.
- Boot tray
Wet shoes live on a tray, not under the seat fabric.
- Blue washable rug
The rug keeps the blue family going so the rust stays the only warm note.

Why one rust cushion finishes a cold blue hall
The coats come in wet and the cushion stays rust. That is the whole trick of this entryway, and it took me years of re-covering window seats in drafty old houses to trust it.
Everything here belongs to one cool family: denim-blue walls, a gray shaker-panel chest, a dusty blue rug, a white-framed window onto the street. Then a single corduroy cushion in burnt terracotta goes on the lid. Orange sits opposite blue on the color wheel, so the eye lands there first and the hall reads as finished rather than chilly.
The proportion is honest. The cushion runs the full length of the lid and stops flush at the front, with a self-piped box edge holding the line. Nothing hangs over, so the lid still lifts without catching a coat sleeve; storage bench cushions on a hinged lid explains why that matters.
Every prop earns its hook. The coats hang high enough that their hems clear the cushion top. Wet shoes live on a boot tray, never under the seat fabric. The mirror and the floating gray drawer shelf with its small plant stay cool, so the rust remains the only warm note, and the rug carries the blue down to the floor for the same reason. What color is your hallway, dear?
Three choices this entryway made, in order
Color from across the wheel
With blue walls, a rust or burnt terracotta cushion does the warming. Keep the chest, rug and shelf in the wall's family so the seat stays the one warm note.
A ribbed pile for a working seat
People sit here in coats and damp jeans. Corduroy's ribs hide creases, and a cover that comes off for cleaning matters more here than in any other room.
Full lid, flush front
Measure the bench, not the cushion you used to have. Run the cushion the full length of the lid and stop it at the front edge. The bench cushion builder takes those numbers, and more halls like this live in mudroom and entryway bench cushions and the wider bench cushion atlas.
