A royal blue velvet Hemnes daybed, seen from the door and from the pillow

One color, one piece of furniture, a quiet room around it. Hana looks at what the eye takes in at ten feet and what the hand finds at ten inches.

White Hemnes daybed with royal blue velvet mattress cover, back cushions and bolsters on a beige rug near a windowSave
Royal blue velvet covers with self piping bring one strong color into a beige bedroom. The white frame and pale rug let the blue stand out.

The quick answer

A royal blue velvet Hemnes daybed cover works in a beige bedroom because the largest piece of furniture carries the only strong color, while the rug, walls and nightstand stay pale. Self piping keeps the mattress, back cushions and bolsters reading as one upholstered block. Order the cover to your exact stacked mattress size; the fit allowance is added for you.

The cushion, cut open

Cross-section through the depth, drawn for 4 in (10 cm) on 17¾ in, to proportion.1. Cover fabric: A removable, zippered cover. Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air dry.; 2. Piping: A fabric-covered cord sewn into the seams. It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size.; 3. Fiber wrap: Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.; 4. Foam core: About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, firm to medium-firm, cut to the ordered size.; 5. Zipper: Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.; 6. Base panel: The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.1Cover fabric3Fiber wrap2Piping5Zipper6Base panel4Foam core2.0 lb HR foam4 in10 cm17¾ in deep · 45 cm

At ten feet: one blue shape in a pale room

From the doorway, you see one thing. A blue rectangle on a white frame.

That is the design. The walls are beige. The rug is beige. The floor is pale oak, the nightstand pale pine. In a room like this, one saturated color on the largest piece of furniture is all the room needs. The Hemnes daybed cover carries it, and nothing else competes.

The window light is soft and comes from the side. It slides across the velvet and gives the blue a faint sheen along the top of each cushion, darker in the folds. At ten feet that reads as depth, not texture.

The small things stay small. A white-shade lamp on the pine nightstand. A beige rug under the daybed, anchoring it without adding color. Neither asks for attention. They hold the room still, so the blue can be bold without being loud.

  1. Royal blue velvet mattress

A saturated blue velvet makes the daybed the single color statement in a neutral room.

  2. Self-piped bolster

Piping in the same blue keeps the round ends soft and unbroken.

  3. Plump back cushion

Full backs let the daybed sit like a sofa during the day.

  4. Lamp on nightstand

A plain lamp on a pine nightstand keeps attention on the blue.

  5. Beige rug

A soft neutral rug anchors the daybed without competing with the color.

At ten inches: what the hand finds

Come close and the single shape separates into parts. A mattress cover with a box edge. Two plump back cushions. Two round bolsters at the ends.

The piping is the same royal blue on every piece. That is why the set still reads as one upholstered block from the door. Up close, the self piping on the bolsters keeps their round ends soft and unbroken, a line you feel with your thumb more than see. More round shapes live under bolster pillows.

The back cushions are full, not thin. Height is a feeling. Full backs lift the sitting line, so the daybed works as a sofa by day and a bed by night; daybed back cushions for a sofa look explains the proportions.

The mattress cover is smooth. No crinkles along the long side. That comes from the order, not the iron: exact measurements, with the allowances added by the maker. Measuring a Hemnes daybed cover covers each dimension.

What is the one color your bedroom could carry?

Bright on the daybed. Pale on the floor. The room rests around it.

A real project

A first apartment and a question about piping

A parent wrote to the workshop about a Hemnes daybed in a daughter's first apartment, set up for graduate school. They were ordering only the mattress cover, in cream velvet, and had one worry. Would burnt terracotta piping be too bright beside the cumin accents already in the room?

The workshop did not decide for them. It laid out the options: no piping, cream on cream, or a muted camel. It pointed them to real-room photos from other buyers. In the end they went with the daughter's first choice.

Then they sent the exact stacked mattress measurements and asked how much leeway to add. None, the workshop said. The fit allowance is built in.

The lesson is short. Give the exact size. The fit is the tailor's job. More sleeping corners are gathered under bedroom cushions.

Buyer questions: exact sizes, cotton velvet, a full set

  1. A common question

I want my daybed cover tight, with no crinkles. Should I add a little to my mattress measurements?

    The workshop's answer

No. Send the exact mattress size, for example 74 x 37 x 7 in (188 x 94 x 18 cm). Padding the numbers leaves the cover slightly loose, and that is where crinkles come from. The workshop adds its own sewing allowances so the cover comes out snug and smooth.

  2. A common question

Could my daybed cover be made in cotton velvet instead of polyester velvet?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, from a supplier range the workshop links to. Those colors carry no codes, so send a picture of the one you want. Supply depends on the supplier: once a cotton velvet couldn't be sourced, and the buyer switched to a cotton-linen fabric instead.

  3. A common question

Can you make the whole daybed set, mattress cover, back cushions and bolsters together?

    The workshop's answer

    Yes. One set was a 76 x 36 x 6.5 in (193 x 91 x 16.5 cm) mattress cover, three 22 x 22 in (56 x 56 cm) back cushions and two 36 x 10 in (91 x 25 cm) bolsters, with pillow-style backs; the custom listing was updated when sizes changed. A linen daybed with a 67 x 27 1/2 x 6 in (170 x 70 x 15 cm) mattress and three 11 3/4 x 27 1/2 x 6 in (30 x 70 x 15 cm) back pillows can be made in heavy pure linen or linen-cotton.

Give the exact stacked mattress size for a Hemnes daybed cover. Adding an inch for comfort makes the velvet loose, and loose is where crinkles start.

Questions buyers ask next

Why does a velvet daybed set look like one piece from across the room?

Because every part, from mattress cover to back cushions and bolsters, is piped in the same velvet as its body. Self piping never draws a second color line, so from the door the set reads as a single upholstered block.

Can a small beige bedroom take a saturated royal blue?

Yes, if the blue stays on one piece. Put it on the largest item, the daybed, and keep walls, rug, lamp and nightstand pale. One strong color on a neutral ground looks deliberate and restful; two or three start to compete.

Do back cushions let a Hemnes daybed work as a sofa during the day?

Yes. Full back cushions along the wall let the daybed sit like a sofa, with bolsters at the ends as armrests. One made-to-measure set paired three 22 x 22 in (56 x 56 cm) backs with two 36 x 10 in (91 x 25 cm) bolsters.
