An eggplant velvet Hemnes daybed cover with ice-blue piping, and how it lives day to day

Hana starts with the questions buyers asked, then reads a purple velvet daybed in a lamp-lit library for what everyday life will do to it.

Eggplant velvet trimmed with ice-blue piping turns a Hemnes daybed into a library reading sofa. The brass lamp and packed bookcase give it a scholarly feel.

The quick answer

An eggplant velvet Hemnes daybed cover suits a lamp-lit reading corner, where deep color is spared strong sun and pale ice-blue piping keeps the outline visible at night. For daily life, plan for parts rather than the whole: the mattress cover can be ordered on its own, so the piece that wears first can be replaced alone.

Three questions before the reading

  1. A common question

Can you make a new fabric cover for the mattress on my IKEA daybed?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Choose the mattress cover option on the daybed cover set listing, and it is made on its own, without the rest of the set.

  2. A common question

For a Kallax bench cushion in a girl's room with peachy-pink walls, I want an olive or sage stripe, not a bright green. Do the numbered stripes read beige, brown or olive?

    The workshop's answer

The shop sent a photo of a finished cushion in the first stripe on the chart, N01, which is the most reliable way to judge whether it reads olive, beige or brown. If none of the stripes gives a sage look, the velvet chart has more greens.

  3. A common question

Could you make covers that turn a queen mattress into a sofa, with a backrest and arm bolsters?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, from a drawing. The mattress cover is sewn closed in the manner of a quilted mattress, with no zipper, either flat or tufted, and the backrest and armrests can be made in a matching buttoned style. One queen setup, 60 x 80 in (152 x 203 cm), was quoted this way.

Now, the reading

A real project

Seven inches or eight

A buyer got in touch wanting cotton velvet, not polyester, for a daybed cover about 54 x 75 in (137 x 190 cm).

Before cutting, the shop noticed something small. The order said 7 in (18 cm) thick. The chat had said 8 in (20 cm). It asked which was right. The buyer checked: 7 in.

Then the fabric supplier could not provide cotton velvet. The buyer switched to a cotton-linen blend instead.

Two lessons. Check that the thickness on your order matches your tape; guesses creep in. And if a fiber matters to you, confirm it can be sourced before you plan the room around it. The Hemnes cover measuring pattern shows where the tape goes.

Pins follow the ice-blue bolster ends, the mattress piping, the eggplant backs, the brass lamp and the bookcase.

  1. Ice-blue piped bolster

Cool ice-blue piping on warm purple velvet gives a crisp, jewel-box edge.

  2. Mattress edge piping

The pale cord traces the mattress front so the deep color keeps its shape in low light.

  3. Eggplant back cushion

Plump velvet backs make this a proper reading sofa rather than a spare bed.

  4. Brass reading lamp

Brass and aubergine is a classic library pairing; the lamp warms the purple at night.

  5. Packed bookcase

Colorful spines give the purple a lively but friendly backdrop.

Eggplant by lamplight, and what daily life will ask of it

This is a Hemnes daybed dressed as a reading sofa. Eggplant velvet on the mattress, two plump back cushions, two bolsters. Ice-blue piping on the edges.

Purple velvet is dramatic. So the piping is pale and cool. It sharpens the outline without adding a second strong color. In low light the cord traces the mattress front, and the deep color keeps its shape.

The room helps. A white frame, beige carpet, a white bookcase packed with colorful spines. The corner stays light, so the velvet reads rich rather than dark. A brass reading lamp is lit. Brass and eggplant is an old library pairing, and at night the lamp warms the purple.

Now the daily life test. A daybed like this is sat on, lain on, leaned on. The front edge and the bolsters take most of it. Velvet pile shows where it has been pressed, so expect pressure marks where people sit most, and brush them back.

This corner lives in lamplight, not a sunny window. Deep colors and strong sun need more thought, and the fading guide explains why. With small children in the house, read kid-friendly cushion fabric before choosing velvet at all.

More sets wait among the Hemnes daybed covers and on the velvet shelf.

Light decides the color. Edges decide the shape. Use decides which cover you replace first.

On a deep velvet daybed, choose piping lighter than the walls; an ice-blue cord keeps an eggplant silhouette readable by lamplight.

Questions buyers ask next

Is velvet practical on a daybed used every day?

It can be, when parts can be replaced. On a Hemnes set the mattress cover can be ordered on its own, so the piece that takes the most wear can be renewed without redoing the backs and bolsters.

Cotton velvet or polyester velvet for a daybed cover?

Both appear on daybed covers. One buyer asked for cotton velvet, but the fabric supplier could not provide it and the order moved to a cotton-linen blend. If fiber matters to you, confirm availability before production starts.

Why ice-blue piping instead of matching purple?

Self piping would disappear into eggplant velvet once the lamp is the only light. A pale, cool cord traces the mattress front and bolster ends, so the shape stays readable without adding a second strong color.
