A teal Hemnes daybed cover with gold piping, under the eaves in every season

Deep teal and one gold line under the eaves. The room changes with the year; the daybed stays.

The quick answer

A Hemnes daybed cover in deep teal with gold piping settles a white daybed under a sloped attic ceiling and works all year: a sofa by day, a guest bed in summer. The set is a fitted mattress cover, two back pillows 15 3/4 in (40 cm) tall and two bolsters, and the covers unzip to wash at 86°F (30°C).

Pinned by Hana: the teal Hemnes daybed

Five pins, from the gold-piped bolster to the frames on the attic wall.

  1. Gold-piped bolster end

Gold piping picks up the rattan and the gilt frames, so the trim looks like part of the room.

  2. Gold line on mattress

A single gold line along the mattress front keeps a dark teal from looking heavy.

  3. Teal back cushion

Back cushions tuck under the sloping ceiling, using headroom a bed frame would waste.

  4. Rattan pendant

The woven shade repeats the warm gold of the piping overhead.

  5. Vintage frame gallery

Small frames in gilt and wood give the attic a collected, cottage feel.

A teal Hemnes daybed under the eaves

Gold piping on teal. One line. It keeps a dark cover from looking heavy.

A low attic, a sloping ceiling, white tongue-and-groove wainscot. The daybed is a white Hemnes dressed in deep teal linen-look weave. Against white paneling a dark body settles. It looks placed, not floating.

The gold runs once along the mattress front and circles the ends of both bolsters. It is borrowed: from the rattan pendant, the gilt frames, the oak floor. So the trim reads as a thread through the room, not an addition.

The back cushions tuck under the slope and use headroom a bed frame would waste. Bolsters at both arms make it possible to lie along the full length with a book. Small botanical and oval frames make the attic feel collected over years.

Height is a feeling.

The nook through four seasons

  1. Winter

Short days. The rattan pendant does the work, and teal reads warmer under it than in daylight. One throw, no more.

  2. Spring

Wash day. Unzip the mattress cover and the back pillow covers and wash them at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Air dry. No tumble dryer.

  3. Summer

Guest season. Lift the back pillows off and the daybed is a bed again. For more than a night or two, a seat softer than a normal seat cushion can be ordered.

  4. Fall

Before the heat comes on, plump the back pillows and bolsters by hand so the shredded-foam fill sits evenly.

A real project

Covers for inserts nobody had measured

One buyer wrote in for a daybed cover, 31 1/2 x 78 3/4 x 7 7/8 in (80 x 200 x 20 cm), and tight-fitting covers for back pillow inserts they already owned.

No thickness was given, and the inserts could have been foam or fiber. So the workshop offered its own inserts at no extra cost, with covers made to fit.

The buyer had also pictured back pillows about 27 1/2 in (70 cm) tall. Too tall for a backrest. Daybed back pillows are made 15 3/4 in (40 cm) tall, so the set became two back pillows at 15 3/4 x 39 3/8 in (40 x 100 cm) and two bolsters, all filled.

Covers and inserts together. Measured once. Nothing left to guess.

The lesson: Tight-fitting covers need a known insert thickness and fill; ordering inserts with the covers removes the guesswork.

Daybed questions, answered plainly

  1. A common question

How tall are the backrests in the corduroy daybed set? I'd like the daybed to work as a sofa during the day.

    The workshop's answer

About 13 3/4 to 15 3/4 in (35 to 40 cm) high, in the same corduroy used on the corduroy floor sofas.

  2. A common question

What does 'with or without piping' mean? Does the corduroy daybed cover have piping?

    The workshop's answer

Corduroy covers are made without piping, because the ribs already make the lines. Velvet and other fabrics can take piping in the same color or a contrasting one.

  3. A common question

Could a cot or daybed cushion be made soft enough to sleep on for a few nights?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. For a 70 x 21 in cot frame used as a guest bed, the workshop confirmed it could make the cushion thick and really soft, softer than a normal seat cushion.

Daybed back pillows are made 15 3/4 in tall and split the length: two 39 3/8 in pillows fill a 78 3/4 in daybed.

Questions buyers ask next

Why does gold piping suit a teal daybed cover?

Gold taken from the room's lamps, frames or wood reads as part of the space. On deep teal it also draws one fine line along the mattress front, which keeps a dark color from looking heavy against white paneling.

Is deep teal too dark for a small attic nook?

Not against white walls. A deep color on pale paneling makes the daybed look settled rather than floating, and a single light piping line along the front keeps the dark body from turning heavy.

Can I order tight covers for back pillow inserts I already own?

Yes, but a tight cover needs the insert's exact size, thickness and fill, foam or fiber. When those are unknown, order the inserts with the covers.
