A raspberry pink striped window seat cushion, and why its piping matches
Élodie reads a summer window seat through its palette: one strong stripe on ivory, peonies to match, and a welt cut from the same cloth.

The quick answer
On a striped window seat cushion, self piping cut from the same stripe keeps the edge light, so the pattern does the decorating. Here a raspberry pink and ivory fine stripe covers a deep box cushion on a white seat; contrast piping would add a heavy frame, and no piping would blur the crisp box edge.
Swatch strip: five colors from one summer window
- Raspberry pink#C2406AThe stripe itself: strong, but broken by ivory so it never shouts
- Ivory ground#F4EEE2The stripe's other half, which turns raspberry rosy
- Peony blush#F1C3CFThe flowers on the sill, matched to the cloth
- Oatmeal linen#D9CCB5One plain pillow to lean on without a second color
- Window white#FAF8F4Painted seat and sill, so the cushion is the only color
Raspberry on ivory, and a welt from the same cloth
Raspberry is a brave color for a window, my friends, and this seat wears it the gentle way: as a fine stripe on ivory.
The setting is almost nothing. A white-painted window seat, a white sill, sheer linen curtains and a small vase of pink and white peonies. Everything that isn't the cushion is white or close to it, so the long box cushion in striped cotton does all the decorating in this corner of the living room. Let one color speak and the others listen.
Watch the light. The voile softens summer sun before it reaches the seat, so raspberry reads rosy rather than hot. Take the curtains down and the same stripe grows louder at noon, so judge any stripe by the window it will live in.
The peonies were matched to the fabric, not the other way around, and a single oatmeal linen pillow gives a back to lean on without adding a second color. That restraint is the design.
The piping decision. The welt is self piping, cut from the same stripe. Along the front edge it becomes a thin pink-and-ivory cord that defines the box without framing it. - Solid raspberry contrast would draw a heavy line under a pattern that is already busy at the edge. - Ivory piping would lighten the edge but make the stripe look trimmed, like a deck chair. - No piping would soften the box corners and let the stripes drift where the panels meet.
On a stripe, the quiet welt is the right one. More on the choice in piping: matching, contrast or none and on stripe direction. Which color would you dare on a window seat cushion if it came as a stripe?
Pinned by Élodie: five notes of pink and white
Five pins, from the self-piped front edge to the sheer curtains that keep the pink rosy.

- Pink stripe cushion
A strong color on an ivory ground stays soft in daylight.
- Self-piped front edge
Matching stripe piping keeps the edge from looking heavy.
- Peonies in a vase
Flowers matched to the fabric pull the scheme together.
- Linen back pillow
One plain pillow gives a place to lean.
- Sheer curtains
Voile diffuses light so the pink reads rosy, not hot.

An 89-inch trapezoid, and no seam allowed
A buyer wrote to the workshop from abroad with a sketch for a made-to-measure trapezoid bench cushion. The sketch was good but one number short, so the workshop asked for the long side too: 89 in (226 cm).
At that length the workshop asked the natural question: would two pieces be acceptable? The buyer said no. It had to be one piece, and it was quoted as a single cushion.
I admire a buyer who knows exactly what the room needs. The lesson is simple: give every side length of a trapezoid, and decide early whether a long cushion may be split. On a stripe the choice matters even more, because a split interrupts the rhythm of the pattern along the seat. See one piece or two.

Buyer questions: extra backrests, an L in two parts, and what the stripes are made of
- A common question
Can I buy extra backrests or the arm pieces of a floor sofa on their own?
The workshop's answerYes. Extra backrests for the corner sofa, the set of backrest pillows and the two arm pieces (which are really corner backrests) are all sold separately, and extra support pieces can be sent. The workshop doesn't share how the arms are built for DIY copies.
- A common question
For an L-shaped bench, is one L-shaped cushion better than two separate ones?
The workshop's answerThe craftsmen recommend two separate seat cushions. A one-piece L makes the cover hard to take off and put back and harder to keep snug; separate pieces are easier to handle, wash and keep neat.
- A common question
What is your striped fabric made of? Is there a linen version?
The workshop's answerThe striped range is 100% cotton; the black-and-white stripe N8 is 98% cotton and 2% polyester. There's no linen version of that stripe.
On a striped window seat cushion, self piping cut from the same stripe keeps the edge light; solid contrast piping frames a pattern that is already busy.

Questions buyers ask next
Is a striped cushion easier to live with than a solid pink one?
Often, yes. A strong color broken by ivory reads softer than a solid, especially in diffused light, and a stripe can disguise small marks. Start with a stripe if you love a color but hesitate to commit to it.
What pillow goes with a pink striped window seat cushion?
One plain pillow in a neutral such as oatmeal linen. It gives a back to lean on without adding a second color, so the stripe stays the only pattern on the seat.
Do sheer curtains change how a pink cushion looks?
Yes. Voile diffuses direct sun, so a strong pink reads rosy rather than hot and changes less through the day. Without sheers the same stripe looks louder at midday, so judge samples by the window itself.
Can a long striped bench cushion be made as one piece?
Yes. One trapezoid bench cushion with an 89 in (226 cm) long side was quoted as a single piece at the buyer's request. At that length the workshop may ask whether two pieces are acceptable, so say early if you need one.
