A powder-blue ticking window seat cushion in an apricot kitchen, and how thick a cushion a shallow seat can carry
Rosa reads a kitchen window seat in powder-blue ticking for its proportion: how thick a cushion a shallow seat can carry, and what keeps it there.
Apricot limewash, sage cabinets and a blue ticking stripe: three soft colors that sit happily together.
The quick answer
A window seat cushion on a shallow kitchen seat should stay slim, around 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm), so it doesn't crowd the window or look top-heavy. On seats as shallow as 13 in (33 cm), add a non-slip base or ties from the start, because a cushion made to the exact size can still creep off the front edge.
A slim blue stripe between apricot walls and sage cabinets
The thinnest cushion in a kitchen is often the one that looks right.
Pull up a chair. This window seat sits in a cream paneled bay between sage shaker cabinets and apricot limewash walls, and the garden door beside it lets warm light fall across the seat. On top lies a powder-blue and ivory ticking in linen: self-piped, box-edged, and slim.
That slimness is the whole trick. A kitchen window seat lives right under the sill, beside cabinet doors and brass knobs. A fat cushion would climb toward the glass and make the paneled box look short. A slim one lets the paneling show and reads as part of the built-in.
The stripe helps too. Ticking is a quiet pattern, and in pale blue it cools a room that leans warm on both sides.
Why the pillows stand in that order
Look at the pillows the way you'd look at a family photo on the porch steps: the tallest and darkest at the back.
- Terracotta linen sits furthest back. It's the darkest, so it gives the group depth.
- Mustard linen stands between the apricot wall and the brass knobs, a go-between color.
- Cream with blue floral sprigs sits in front and repeats the cushion's blue in tiny flowers, so the stripe isn't alone.
The linen roman blind is drawn up to let garden light in. White tulips on an oak pedestal table finish the corner, and a cream rug keeps the floor soft.
Beside painted cabinets, pick a cushion color the cabinets and walls don't already have. And before you pick a thickness: how deep is the seat under it?
Thickness has its own Pattern, window seat cushion thickness, and the seat height calculator shows where your knees will land. See more window seat cushions, kitchen nook cushions, and ticking on the linen and cotton-linen shelf.

Sixty-one inches long, thirteen deep, and a cushion that wouldn't stay put
A buyer wrote to the workshop about a window seat 61 in (155 cm) long and only 13 in (33 cm) deep. They wanted a slim cushion in linen L04 with L16 piping, low enough that it wouldn't block the window.
The workshop suggested 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm) and checked the thickness with them before production. The cushion was made to the exact measurements given. And it still slid off the front edge.
Nothing had been cut wrong. A seat that shallow just doesn't give a cushion much to hold on to. The workshop offered three ways forward: a remake, a slightly larger size, or an anti-slip base.
My porch-step lesson, neighbor: on a shallow sill, measure the real seat surface at several points, and put a non-slip base or ties on the order from the start. The options are laid out in stopping a bench cushion from sliding.
Buyer questions: extra points, big batches and a last look before shipping
- A common question
My bay window cushion is a trapezoid with a few extra points and angles. Can you make that?
The workshop's answerYes. Trapezoid variations with extra points and angles are exactly the kind of custom shape the workshop makes. Order through the trapezoid listing, using the depth and the overall length to choose the size, then upload your pictures with measurements at checkout.
- A common question
We need a large batch of identical cushions. Is there bulk pricing?
The workshop's answerYes, and bulk quotes are worked out one order at a time. For 26 stitched, tufted-style cushions at 70 x 24 in (178 x 60 cm), the per-cushion price came down well below list with delivery to the door included, and a payment link followed once the details were confirmed. Hospitality and holiday-rental buyers are steered toward the most durable fabrics.
- A common question
Will I get to see my finished cushion before it ships?
The workshop's answerOften, yes. For custom shapes the workshop sends final-check photos with measurements and waits for your approval. On one angled bay cushion the slanted sides measured 26 in (67 cm), and the buyer approved the photos before shipping. Changes are still possible then: remaking a cushion so the corduroy stripes ran vertically on the edges took about 2 extra days.

On a window seat only 13 in deep, a 2 to 3 in cushion is plenty, and a non-slip base or ties belong on the order from day one.

Questions buyers ask next
How thick should a kitchen window seat cushion be?
Slim enough to sit below the window line and let the built-in show. On a shallow seat, 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm) is the range the workshop suggested for a 13 in (33 cm) deep sill. Deeper seats can carry more thickness.
Why would a cushion made to the exact size still slide?
A shallow seat offers very little surface to grip, and people tend to sit on the front edge. An exact fit adds no friction. A non-slip base or ties, ordered with the cushion, is what holds it in place.
What cushion color works with sage cabinets and apricot walls?
Both lean warm, so a cool color neither of them contains, such as powder blue, balances the room without shouting. Ticking or a fine stripe keeps it quiet, and a small-print pillow can repeat the blue at a smaller scale.
