A burnt orange window seat cushion for a kitchen drawer bench, firm below and soft behind

Rosa opens her kitchen notebook to a terracotta cushion on cream Shaker drawers and writes down what belongs inside the seat, what belongs inside the pillows, and why the two differ.

The quick answer

A kitchen window seat cushion should have high-density foam in the seat and softer shredded foam in any back pillows. The seat has to hold a steady height at the counter through every meal, while back pillows should give and shape to you. This burnt orange linen-look box cushion covers the full bench depth, so its front edge lines up with the drawer faces.

First note: firm in the seat, soft behind the shoulders

Kitchen benches get sat on differently from any other seat in the house, and the filling should follow suit.

At a counter or a breakfast table you sit upright, slide in and out a dozen times a day, and expect your elbows to meet the table at the same height every time. That is a job for high-density foam, which holds its thickness under a grown-up at supper and a child kneeling for pancakes. It is why seat cushions stay high-density foam. Kids and dogs are the real quality control, neighbor, and a kitchen bench meets both before eight in the morning.

Back pillows want the opposite. When a buyer asked the workshop what to put behind the backs of a banquette, the answer was shredded foam, softer than the solid block in the seat and willing to shape itself to shoulders. So picture two fillings in this photo: a firm block under the burnt orange, and softer fill in whatever leans against the window. How many times a day does your kitchen bench get sat on? If you want numbers before you choose, the foam density and firmness pattern sets them out plainly.

Rosa's pins on the drawer bench

Follow the pins from the burnt orange seat to the olive velvet pillow, the bouclé pair, the seagrass basket and the brass pull below.

  1. Burnt orange cushion

A rust linen-look box cushion with self piping, cut to the full depth of the bench.

  2. Olive velvet pillow

One green velvet pillow is the complementary color that makes the orange glow.

  3. Ivory boucle pillow

Nubby boucle adds texture without adding another color.

  4. Seagrass basket

The woven basket repeats the warm, natural tone of the seat on the counter.

  5. Brass bar pull

Warm brass hardware bridges the cream cabinetry and the terracotta cushion.

Second note: one orange, one green and a row of brass

Draw a kitchen window bench in a notebook and the first line you rule is the front edge. Here it lands right over the cream Shaker drawer faces, because the cushion was cut to the full depth of the bench. No lip hanging over, no ledge of painted wood showing. That one straight line is why the corner looks built rather than furnished.

The cushion is a linen-look box in burnt orange with self piping, so the edge is drawn by a cord of the same cloth. Terracotta on cream is an old warm pairing, and it lets the color carry the seat without an outline. The brushed brass bar pulls borrow that warmth and hand it down to the drawers.

The pillows follow a rule I would write in the margin of every kitchen notebook: two textures, one opposite. Two ivory bouclé pillows bring nubby texture and no new color. One olive green velvet pillow sits in front, and green is the complement of orange, so the seat glows beside it. The seagrass basket of rolled towels on the butcher-block counter repeats the seat's natural warmth one level up.

The cloth here lives on the linen-look fabrics shelf, and more corners like this one sit among our kitchen nook cushions.

A real project

The 138-inch seat that had to arrive in one piece

A buyer in the US sent the workshop measurements for a window seat most people would call a runway: 40 in (102 cm) deep, 138 in (351 cm) long and 3 in (7.5 cm) thick, in a linen with a contrasting velvet piping. They had one worry above all others. Would it show up in two sections?

It was a fair question, since very long cushions are sometimes made in two. The workshop confirmed it could make it as one continuous piece, then added the 40 x 138 in size to the listing so they could check out.

Write this one in your own notebook: when a seat runs long, ask up front whether it comes as one piece or two. It changes how you carry it, how you wash the cover and how the finished seat looks. The long bench cushion pattern weighs both roads.

Buyer questions: short seats, soft backs and busy benches

  1. A common question

My bench cushion came a few inches shorter than I ordered. Can that be fixed?

    The workshop's answer

Send the workshop a photo with a tape measure laid along the full length, neighbor. In one case, with 54 in (137 cm) arriving instead of 57 in (145 cm), the size was the workshop's error and it remade the cushion at the ordered size.

  2. A common question

What filling would you put in the back pillows on a banquette?

    The workshop's answer

Shredded foam, which is softer than the solid foam used in seats. The seat cushions themselves stay high-density foam.

  3. A common question

Which fabric is the toughest and easiest to clean for a busy cafe banquette?

    The workshop's answer

The velvet collection. It is highly durable and the easiest to wipe down and spot-clean by hand where traffic is heavy. Every cover is removable and machine washable at 86°F (30°C), whichever fabric you pick; velvet simply spot-cleans a little more easily because of its structure.

A kitchen window seat cushion should be cut to the full bench depth, so its front edge lands flush over the drawer faces instead of hanging past them.

Questions buyers ask next

Should a kitchen bench cushion overhang the drawer fronts below it?

No. Cut to the full depth of the bench top, the front edge sits flush above the drawer faces and the bench looks built in. An overhang hides the hardware you chose and breaks the straight line of the cabinetry.

Why pair a burnt orange cushion with one olive green pillow?

Olive green sits opposite orange on the color wheel, so a single green pillow makes the orange look warmer and richer. Keep the other pillows in a neutral texture, such as ivory bouclé, so only one color answers the seat.

Can a 138 inch window seat cushion be made in one piece?

Yes. The workshop has made a seat 40 in deep, 138 in long and 3 in thick as one continuous piece. Ask before ordering, because very long cushions are sometimes suggested in two sections for easier handling.
