Pale sky blue gingham on a corner floor cushion, and the light that suits it

Harlan takes three buyer questions first, then reads the quietest colorway in the house: blue check, greige wall, oak floor and one white lamp.

The quick answer

A pale blue gingham corner floor cushion looks best in a room kept equally light: greige walls, light oak floors, a white lamp and muted greens such as a sage rug. Cool blue check needs soft daylight and little competition. Seams can be flat or piped, custom sizes are made, and a seat can be ordered without its backrest.

Buyer questions, before we look: seams, sizes and seats alone

  1. A common question

Will my floor cushions come with a flat seam or a piped edge? Your photos show both.

    The workshop's answer

Either can be made. By default the cushions are sewn with a flat seam and no raised welt, and every piece in a set, ottoman and backrests included, is sewn to match. Write the seam you want in the personalization box when you order.

  2. A common question

What size is the floor seating shown in your photos?

    The workshop's answer

The green set in those photos is 28 x 56 in (71 x 142 cm). Custom sizes are made too, so you can send your own measurements instead.

  3. A common question

Can I order just the bottom cushion and skip the backrest?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. A seat-only cushion is quoted on its own and costs less than the same seat with a backrest, whether it is a long 36 x 73 in (91 x 185 cm) base or a 67 x 39 3/8 in (170 x 100 cm) seat.

Now, the reading

Why sky blue check wants a greige wall

Folks tell me blue is a cold color. I tell them blue is an honest one; it shows you exactly what light you have. In this corner the light is soft and cool, and the pale sky blue gingham on the corner floor cushion takes it without a fight.

Look at what surrounds it. The walls are greige, a gray with a little warmth folded in, so the check reads blue instead of icy. The floor is light oak, which carries the only real warmth in the picture. A sage green rug underfoot is muted enough to sit beside cool blue without an argument, and the fiddle-leaf fig in its woven basket and the dried flowers on the side table bring in more of those quiet greens.

The white is working too. The white threads of the check, the white swing-arm lamp and the pale ceramics and folded towels on the open shelves all answer one another, so the eye climbs the wall and comes back down to the seat. Then one slim black tray table gives the whole palette an edge to lean on. Take the black away and the corner goes soft as butter.

The lamp is fixed to the wall above the right-hand backrest pillow. That makes the right side the reading side, and it leaves the floor clear, which matters when a floor cushion stands in for an armchair in a small room. A floor lamp would nudge the cushion out of its corner.

The self-piped box edge keeps the check tidy where the two sides meet. A seam is a promise, my friend, and on a small check you can see whether it was kept: the lines either run true to the edge or they don't. Choose gingham and checked linen by a window, not on a phone, and screen versus daylight color explains why. What color is the wall behind the corner you have in mind?

Pinned by Harlan: the reading side of the corner

  2. Right backrest pillow

  3. Wall-mounted lamp

A wall light keeps the floor clear, so the pouf can sit right in the corner of a small room.

  4. Side table with dried flowers

A slim black table holds a mug without crowding the pouf.

  5. Sage green rug

Muted green underfoot sits well with the cool blue check.

A real project

A classroom reading corner in smoke gray

A teacher in the US wrote to the workshop about a reading corner for her classroom. She compared the listing photos to settle on a size and chose the 46 x 46 in (117 x 117 cm) corner cushion in a smoke gray.

After ordering, she asked for something waterproof. The workshop told her plainly that its fabrics are not waterproof, then offered the water-repellent collection and let her pick the color closest to the gray she wanted.

Here is the lesson I would pass along. For a room full of children, ask for a water-repellent fabric from the start; it cleans up far more easily than a standard velvet or linen. There are more ideas in kids' and classroom reading corners.

  • Check white#F6F6F2Repeated in the wall lamp and the shelf ceramics.
  • Greige wall#CFC8BDWarm enough that the blue never turns icy.
  • Light oak#D4B690The only real warmth in the room, underfoot.
  • Sage rug#A8B59BA muted green that sits beside blue without a quarrel.
  • Tray-table black#1F1F1FOne dark accent so the pale palette has an edge.

Pale blue gingham needs a greige wall and a light oak floor around it; set it against stark white and the check starts to look cold.

Questions buyers ask next

What wall colors suit a pale blue gingham floor cushion?

Greige and other warm-leaning grays suit it best, because they keep the blue from turning icy. Light oak floors add warmth, and muted greens such as a sage rug or a potted fig sit comfortably beside the cool check.

Is a wall lamp or a floor lamp better beside a corner floor cushion?

In a small room, a wall-mounted swing-arm lamp is the better choice. It lights the reading side of the seat and leaves the floor clear, so the cushion can sit fully in the corner instead of making room for a lamp base.

What fabric finish works for a floor cushion in a classroom?

For a classroom, the finish matters more than the pattern. Ask for a water-repellent fabric, which cleans up far more easily than standard velvet or linen, and pick the closest color the collection offers to the one you had in mind.
