The Cutting Table · a question, worked through

My velvet or corduroy looks marked after vacuum packing. Is it damaged?

Pile fabric carries the memory of the trip for a while. Press it flat inside a roll pack for days and it shows. Here is how the conversation usually runs, one follow-up at a time.

The quick answer

Velvet or corduroy that looks marked after vacuum packing is usually pressed pile, not damage. Lay the piece flat and uncovered for a few days, up to about 10, and brush by hand in the direction of the pile. Cover-only orders skip the compression and arrive even. If marks remain after settling, the shop has sent a replacement cover.

“It looks bruised. Did the packing ruin it?”

No, friend. What you are looking at is pile that spent the trip under pressure. A roll pack pulls the air out of the foam, and the velvet on top gets pressed hard against the plastic. Velvet answers with pressure marks: lighter and darker patches where the fibers now lie at different angles.

Corduroy does it its own way. The ribs survive, but the pile between them gets pushed in different directions, so one panel reads flat, almost shaved, beside the next. That is the fabric telling you about the weather it came through, not a fault in the cloth.

“So what do I actually do?”

  1. Unpack it, then lay it flat and bare

Out of the plastic, flat on the floor or a bed, uncovered. No throws, no pillows, nothing stacked on top.

  2. Give it days, not hours

The foam reaches full shape in about 24 to 48 hours. The pile is slower: allow a few days for velvet and up to about 10 for corduroy.

  3. Brush with the pile, by hand

Smooth each marked patch with your palm or a soft brush in the direction the pile naturally lies. One direction only.

  4. Check it again in daylight

After the settling days, look at it by a window. If a patch is still marked or matted, photograph it and message the shop.

“And if it doesn't come back?”

Then the shop makes it right. A velvet piece that stayed marked got a replacement cover; a corduroy sofa whose matting outlasted the settling days got a replacement cover set.

Re-covering foam you already own? Cover-only parcels are not compressed, so they arrive even, whether for a corner floor cushion or a modular floor sofa. The first 72 hours Pattern covers the foam side. How many days has yours been out of the bag?

Corduroy that looks shaved after unpacking is pile pushed in different directions by vacuum pressure; it settles laid flat and uncovered over a few days.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

My velvet came out of the compressed package with marks that look like bruises. Is that normal?

    The workshop's answer

Some marking right after opening is normal for a vacuum-compressed piece. Give it a few days and brush or smooth the velvet gently by hand. When it didn't improve, the shop sent a replacement cover.

  2. A common question

Some panels of my corduroy sofa cover look matted and rough next to the rest. What now?

    The workshop's answer

Vacuum pressure can lay the pile in different directions, so some areas look flatter. Let the sofa settle for a few days, up to about 10, flat and uncovered, and brush by hand along the pile. Matting that stayed was fixed with a replacement cover set.

  3. A common question

How do I get a vacuum-packed cushion out without nicking the fabric?

    The workshop's answer

The fabric sits right against the plastic, so skip knives and long scissors. Snip the bag's edge away from the cushion and tear it open by hand. The foam starts expanding at once and reaches full shape in about 24 to 48 hours.

Questions buyers ask next

Do flat-weave covers show vacuum pressure marks as much as velvet?

No. Pile fabrics such as velvet and corduroy show compression the most, because the raised pile is exactly what gets pressed down in the roll pack. If even shading matters to you, give any pile cover the full settling routine before judging it.

Why did my spare covers arrive without any marks?

Covers ordered on their own are not vacuum-compressed, so nothing presses the pile flat in transit. They look uniform straight out of the box, which is why a spare can look different from the cover that traveled on the foam.

How long should I wait before asking for a replacement cover?

Give velvet a few days and corduroy up to about 10, laid flat, uncovered and brushed by hand along the pile. If the marks or matting are still there after that, contact the shop with photos; replacement covers and cover sets have been sent in exactly this case.
