A denim blue corner floor cushion, set for company
Plain linen-look fabric against white shiplap, cream pillows, a slab table within reach. Harlan writes a letter about floor seating for the night the chairs run out.
SaveThe quick answer
A corner floor cushion seats a crowd because a quarter circle has no arms and no fixed places: guests sit along both walls, around the curve and against the edge from the rug. Choose a solid, forgiving color like denim blue next to shiplap, keep a low table within reach, and add floor pillows or an ottoman for overflow.
High Point ·
My friend,
A letter for the night the chairs run out
Every host learns the same arithmetic: the chairs run out before the conversation does. We had a saying in the shop for it. A chair seats one; a floor seats whoever shows up.
This corner is built for that. A denim blue quarter-circle seat in a linen-look weave, two cream backrest pillows with flanged edges against white shiplap, and nothing with arms to decide how many may sit. Two sit against the walls. A third takes the curve. Another leans on a pillow, and one more sits on the rug with a back against the cushion edge, which is the best seat in the house anyhow.
The fabric is plain because the wall is not. Horizontal shiplap is already full of lines; put a stripe on the cushion and the corner turns into graph paper. The cream pillows nearly melt into the white boards, which pushes the blue seat forward into the room, toward your guests. Denim blue earns its place with company, too. It hides the wear of many sitters and the odd dropped cracker.
Then the rustic and the hard. A live-edge wood slab on hairpin legs sits at the right, low enough to reach from the floor. A black industrial floor lamp gives the corner a strong upright line. Floating shelves carry trailing pothos and a framed photo up high, and a dark distressed rug lies over light oak. Without those, a white room and a blue cushion would feel like a waiting room. With them, it feels like somebody lives here and expected you.
Hosting notes, pinned to the workshop wall
- Keep a surface within reach of the curve, low enough to use from the floor.
- Leave the backrest pillows loose, so guests can move them to where they sit.
- Choose a solid fabric next to shiplap or paneling, and let the wall carry the lines.
- Put the forgiving color on the seat and the pale one on the backs, which get touched less.
- Plan the overflow: floor pillows or an ottoman in the same fabric beat a borrowed kitchen chair.

Corduroy instead of velvet, same corner
A buyer messaged the workshop about the quarter-tufted corner floor cushion for a reading nook. They liked the design but wanted it in a thick, good-quality cotton corduroy instead of velvet. The shop offered the same corduroy it uses on its modular sofas, at no extra cost, and the cushion was ordered at about 40 x 40 in (102 x 102 cm) in beige.
The lesson travels well. Most tufted designs can be made in another upholstery fabric, so ask before assuming the fabric in the photograph is the only one on offer. Compare linen-look fabrics with corduroy, size the curve with the quarter-circle corner cushion Pattern, and browse the corner floor cushions and modular floor sofas atlases if the crowd keeps growing. How many do you need to seat when the whole family comes?
Buyer questions: returns, boxes and the color of the bars
- A common question
What's the return policy on a sofa, and what does return shipping cost?
The workshop's answerIf something arrives damaged, goes missing or differs from the description, the shop sends a replacement or refunds. For a change of mind, the buyer pays return shipping, which on a sofa can run to several hundred dollars, so check with local carriers first. Items that come back damaged are not refunded.
- A common question
How many boxes does the modular sofa come in, and how big are they?
The workshop's answerThe open-corner sofa ships in 4 boxes, each about 50 x 12 x 12 in and 22 lb (10 kg). Cushions and backrests are compressed in roll packs, and the metal bars come in a separate parcel. A sofa plus a pouf chair arrived as 6 parcels.
- A common question
Can the metal frame bars be gold, or another color?
The workshop's answerNo. The bars come only in silver chrome, even on mustard or other colored sofas.

Questions buyers ask next
How many people can sit on a corner floor cushion?
It depends on the size and how friendly the guests are. With no arms and loose backrest pillows, people sit along both walls and around the curve, and more can lean against the cushion edge from the rug.
What color floor cushion hides wear best?
Mid-tone solids such as denim blue hide wear, lint and small marks better than white or cream. Keep cream for the backrest pillows, which are touched less, and give the seat the stronger, more forgiving color.
Can a tufted corner floor cushion be made in corduroy instead of velvet?
Usually, yes. One buyer asked for thick cotton corduroy in place of velvet, and the shop used the same corduroy as its modular sofas at no extra cost, making a 40 x 40 in (102 x 102 cm) cushion in beige.
Does floor seating need a table nearby?
It helps a great deal. A low table within reach of the curve, such as a wood slab on short hairpin legs, gives guests somewhere to set a glass or a plate, so nobody balances a drink on the cushion.
Sit well. — Harlan
