A Reading by NateL-Shaped Corner Bench Cushions

An orchid pink L-shaped bench cushion, and how to mix pattern around it

Two seat pieces, two back pads, one plum piping line. A dressing-room corner bench is a small geometry problem with a color problem on top. Both, measured.

A pink corner bench gives a bedroom dressing area a place to sit, dress and store off-season clothes.

The quick answer

An L-shaped bench cushion is made as two pieces: one runs into the corner at full length, the other is shortened by the seat depth. In a room with pattern, keep the bench a plain woven texture and let stripes or prints sit on pillows and throws. Striped seats work too; on each piece the stripes run front to back.

One seat of the L, cut open

Cross-section through the depth, drawn for 3 in (7.5 cm) on 15¾ in, 63¾ in long, to proportion.1. Woven cover: Orchid pink performance weave, zipped and removable. Wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle, air dry.; 2. Plum piping: A contrast cord in the top and bottom seams. It sits on the seam line, so a 3 in cushion stays 3 in.; 3. Fiber wrap: Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.; 4. Foam core: About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, firm to medium-firm, cut to the ordered size.; 5. Zipper: Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.; 6. Base panel: The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.1Woven cover3Fiber wrap2Plum piping5Zipper6Base panel4Foam core3 in7.5 cm15¾ in deep · 40 cm

Reading the corner: two seats, two backs

Start with the geometry, partner. A cream storage bench turns a corner beside a glass-fronted wardrobe. On it: two box seats in an orchid pink woven fabric, a long back pad against the half wall, and a short return back that closes the L so the corner is actually sittable. Four pieces, all piped in plum.

The plum is doing structural work: it echoes the wardrobe's dark frames and gives a textured pink a hard outline. Without it, the pale weave would blur into the cream bench.

The white lamp and the fern on the oak side table make the corner usable after dark. The bed's pastel geometric throw is the only print in view, kept at a distance. And in a bedroom the seats should lift easily, because the boxes underneath hold off-season clothes.

Five points on the L

Five callouts, from the long back pad to the lamp.

  1. Long back cushion

A full-length back pad along the half wall turns the storage bench into a small sofa.

  2. Short return back

The short back pad closes the L so the corner is comfortable to sit in.

  3. Plum-piped seat

Dark plum piping echoes the wardrobe frames and sharpens the woven pink.

  4. Table lamp

A lamp on the side table makes the corner usable in the evening.

  5. Glass wardrobe

The bench doubles as a place to lay out clothes next to the wardrobe.

Plain, stripe, texture: an order of risk

Pattern on an L-shaped bench cushion is harder than on a straight bench, because the corner shows you both pieces at once. Lowest risk first:

  • Plain texture on the seats, pattern elsewhere. This photo. A woven solid hides seams and wear; the print lives on the bed.
  • Stripes on the seats, plain on the backs. The roll is about 55 in (140 cm) wide, so stripes run front to back on a long cushion by default, and a longer piece needs a seam. On an L, both pieces follow that rule, so the stripes turn the corner with the bench.
  • Striped piping on a striped seat. The red ticking corner in the gallery does it. Handsome, and the least forgiving of a wandering seam.

Striped and ticking fabrics are 100% cotton and stain more easily than a performance weave, so where clothes get laid out, texture wins. More on stripe direction.

A real project

Two runs, one corner, 47¼ in

A buyer messaged the workshop with an L-shaped bench and a tape measure she didn't trust. Her runs were 63¾ in (1620 mm) and 63 in (1600 mm) from the back corner, 15¾ in (400 mm) deep, for 3 in (75 mm) cushions in a soft performance weave with piping one shade off.

The workshop drew two pieces. The first runs into the corner at 63¾ x 15¾ in (162 x 40 cm). The second loses the seat depth: 63 minus 15¾ leaves 47¼ x 15¾ in (120 x 40 cm). Measure twice; the fabric remembers.

Sizes
63¾ x 15¾ in and 47¼ x 15¾ in, 3 in thick

The lesson: On an L bench, one cushion runs full length; the other is shortened by the seat depth.

Three, answered to the half inch

  1. A common question

Can you quote a bay window seat cushion from a photo I've marked up with measurements?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Pick the size range that covers the overall size, say 85 x 23¾ in (216 x 60.5 cm), give the fabric code and thickness in personalization, and upload the photo. 2, 3, 4 and 5 in cost the same.

  2. A common question

My custom cushion is about an inch off from what I ordered. What now?

    The workshop's answer

Let it expand for 3 to 4 days first. Then send a photo of the whole cushion in place and clear tape-measure photos along each side. About ½ in counts as normal handmade tolerance before a fix is discussed.

  3. A common question

Can I pay extra to rush my cushions for a set date?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Priority production moves your order to the front of the queue. Send your measurements and fabric first, then add the priority option and write your date in the order note.

An L-shaped bench cushion is two pieces: one runs full length into the corner, the other is cut short by exactly the seat depth.

Questions buyers ask next

Is one L-shaped cushion better than two pieces?

Usually not. Two pieces meeting at the corner fit better and ship more safely. A one-piece L can be made, but it is not recommended.

Can the back pads on a corner bench be different lengths?

Yes. Each back pad is measured to its own wall: a long one on the main run, a short return closing the corner. Standard back cushions are about 16 in (40 cm) tall.

Can I mix a striped seat with plain backs on an L bench?

Yes. Any chart color works for any piece, and piping codes are given separately. Striped fabrics are 100% cotton and stain more easily, so stripes are often safer on backs and pillows.
