Plate Midnight Navy Velvet Bench Cushion on a Weathered Dune-Side Deck
Midnight navy velvet on a silvered deck bench, with lemons, rattan and linen for a relaxed coastal look.
A Reading by HarlanBench Cushions
A custom bench cushion in midnight navy velvet, self-piped, on a silvered deck above the dunes
Navy velvet on a driftwood-gray bench, lemons on a rattan tray, sea light over everything. The piping is the quietest decision in the picture, and the smartest.
The quick answer
Self piping, a welt covered in the cushion's own fabric, is the right choice for a long navy bench cushion that should look relaxed. It firms the box edge without drawing a line around it. Contrast piping outlines the shape and reads more nautical, while no piping gives the softest, plainest edge. On a deck in full summer sun, order the same navy in outdoor fabric.
Pinned by Harlan: five things on a sunlit deck
Five pins, from the rattan tray at the far end to the navy-on-navy welt and the silvered bench frame underneath it.
The numbers match the pins on the plate.

Self, contrast or none: what the welt does to a long line
Look along the front edge of this custom bench cushion and you will hardly see the piping. That is the point. The welt is covered in the same midnight navy velvet as the top, so it firms the box edge without drawing a line around it.
Put a white cord there and the whole bench changes character. White on navy is a sailor's collar. On a deck above the dunes it would read as yacht club, and a little like costume. A contrast welt earns its keep when you want a shape outlined, a crisp rectangle in a formal room. Here the owner wanted a place to stretch out, so the edge stays quiet.
Leave the piping off entirely and you get the softest, plainest edge of all, the kind that suits a lounging pillow. On a thick box cushion that gets sat on every day, I keep the welt. A seam is a promise, and a piped seam holds its line.
The piping pattern lays the three choices side by side, and the glossary explains what self piping is made of.
Why the navy looks deeper against gray timber
The bench is thin, weathered and gray as driftwood. Set a thick navy cushion on it and the frame nearly disappears, so the piece reads like a daybed in miniature. On a deck where people stretch out after a swim, that is the right proportion.
Silver-gray wood makes navy look darker than it is, and bright sea light presses the pile into one deep, even color. Then three props, each used once: a round rattan tray to break the long straight line and keep a glass steady, a glass of lemon water, and halved lemons. Yellow is navy's oldest partner. At the other end, an oatmeal linen throw repeats the sand of the dunes. What is your bench made of, and how gray has it gone?
Now the honest part, my friend. Velvet left out in salt air and strong sun fades quickly. For a deck that stays furnished all summer, ask for the same navy in an outdoor cushion fabric, and keep the velvet for porch cushions that live under a roof.

Seven sides, typed out in plain numbers
The same deep navy velvet went into a bay window seat for a buyer in the US, and the order nearly stalled on a drawing. The sketch of the angled-top bay was hard to read, so the workshop asked for every side typed out.
The buyer sent a list: A and B 4¼ in (11 cm), C 78½ in (199 cm), D 48 in (122 cm), E and F 24 in (61 cm), and G 23 in (58 cm). Seven letters, seven numbers, no guessing. The cushion was cut in velvet 131, Deep Navy Blue, a fabric that goes through the machine at 86°F (30°C).
The lesson I pass to every apprentice: label every side with a letter and type the numbers as well as drawing them. Pencil smudges. Typed numbers do not. The bay window calculator and the pattern on custom cushion drawings walk you through it.
Buyer questions: sun on a window seat, oatmeal with charcoal, pillows bought later
- A common question
My cushion is going by a sunny window. Is the color going to fade?
The workshop's answerThe workshop answered that the fabric is made to resist fading in sunlight, and that it cleans up easily with gentle hand cleaning.
- A common question
Which colors would suit an oatmeal and charcoal gray room if we have pets?
The workshop's answerG-47 is the oatmeal, a warm cream, and G-48 is one shade deeper beige. G-61 is a true deep charcoal gray, while G-62 goes darker, an almost-black anthracite. For oatmeal with charcoal, the workshop recommended G-47 paired with G-61.
- A common question
Could I buy extra backrest pillows later, one straight and one L-shaped?
The workshop's answerYes. Extra straight and L-shaped backrest pillows can be ordered at any time, separately from the original set.
Questions buyers ask next
Should a navy velvet deck cushion get white piping or navy piping?
Navy, if you want the bench to look relaxed. Same-color piping firms the edge without outlining it. White piping draws a crisp frame and reads nautical, which suits a formal room or a boat theme better than a beach-house deck.
Can a velvet bench cushion stay out on an open deck all summer?
Not happily. Strong sun and salt air fade velvet quickly. Keep velvet under a roof or carry it in, and for an open deck order the same color in an outdoor fabric made for sun and damp.
Why type out each side of a bay window seat instead of only sketching it?
Because a sketch can be misread. Give every side a letter and list it with its number in inches, such as A 4.3 in or C 78.5 in. The workshop can then cut from a typed list without guessing at handwriting.
Which props suit a navy cushion on a beach deck?
A few, each used once: a round rattan tray to break the long line, something yellow such as lemons, and a sand or oatmeal linen throw that repeats the dunes beyond the railing.
