A Navy Tropical Banquette Cushion and the Rule of One Busy Print

The questions go first, because buyers had opinions. Then a pine banquette where one small print does all the talking and everything else listens.

A pine banquette with a high back and a bright floral cushion becomes the family's favorite seat at the table.

The quick answer

A patterned banquette cushion works when it is the only busy print in the nook and everything around it is plain or textured: solid pillows pulled from the print's colors, a painted table, natural wood. Add a stripe only in a small piece. When ordering a long banquette, state whether each length is per piece or the total run.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

I got my bench measurements wrong after ordering. Can I get a new quote?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Before production the workshop re-quotes and updates the custom listing link. One 98.5 in (250 cm) order became a 68 x 22.5 in (173 x 57 cm) seat and a 68.5 x 20 in (174 x 51 cm) backrest, with the length kept no longer than the bench.

  2. A common question

Do you have patterned fabrics, and do they cost more than plain ones?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, there are extra patterned fabric charts, shared on request. There is no price difference between the fabrics, so you can choose freely.

  3. A common question

    What's the difference between P-50 and P-51, and between N06 and N09?

    The workshop's answer

P-50 is creamier and warmer, a soft ivory; P-51 is cooler and more neutral, a very light greige. N06 is a dark navy very close to black, and N09 is black. In thin stripes the difference barely shows on screen, so the workshop sends a photo taken under light.

Now, the reading

A real project

Ten feet, or two times five?

Right, then. A buyer in the US ordered seat and back cushions for a 10 ft (305 cm) built-in banquette, did several things well, and then one thing went sideways.

Well: they re-measured and held the seat depth to 22 in (56 cm), because 24 in (61 cm) would have overhung by 2 in (5 cm). Well again: when the workshop pointed out that a 4 in (10 cm) seat under a 16 in (41 cm) back makes 20 in (51 cm) stacked, they changed the back to 15 in (38 cm) and added two side bolsters.

Sideways: the cushions shipped in separate parcels, and the long pieces turned out to be 2 x 5 ft (152 cm) each. The buyer had expected each one to be 10 ft long. Nobody had written down whether '10 ft' meant per piece or the whole run.

I once did the same with a window seat, dear, and I still wince. Write 'one piece' or 'two pieces' beside every length and confirm the count in writing before production. The one piece or two Pattern covers the choice.

Reading the pine banquette: one print, many plains

Now the photo. A pine built-in banquette with its own tall back, so the cushion only has to be a seat. Navy cotton canvas with a small tropical print, palm leaves and tiny pink and orange flowers, self-piped, box edge. It sits inside the pine side panel, which makes it easy to lift out and wipe underneath. Crumbs happen.

The navy ground is the anchor. Everything around it is light: pine, a sage table, sage upholstered chairs, a white cone pendant, open shelves of jars and books. A busy print needs that much quiet.

The pillows do the pattern-mixing by not being patterns. The teal one picks up the palm leaves and supports the lower back. The coral one repeats the flowers and brings texture with a ruffle instead of a second print. A jug of garden flowers echoes the printed ones, and a child's drawing and a fruit bowl make it a family table, not a showroom.

Want a stripe? Keep it to one small piece, say a lumbar in thin navy ticking from striped cotton and ticking, so it shares the navy and changes the scale. Measure seat depth from the face of the backrest, not the wall. Banquette cushions, kitchen nook cushions and the banquette thickness Pattern cover the rest. What's the busiest thing in your nook right now?

Five pins at the family table

Five pins, from the tropical seat to the jug of flowers, show how one busy print is surrounded by plains.

Pattern-mixing checklist for a banquette

  • One busy print, on the biggest piece.
  • Pillows in solids pulled from that print.
  • Texture, such as a ruffle or a nubby weave, before a second pattern.
  • A stripe only in a small piece, at a different scale.
  • Wood and painted furniture nearby, left plain.

A banquette cushion can carry one busy print if the pillows are solids pulled from it: coral from the flowers, teal from the leaves.

Questions buyers ask next

How many patterns can one breakfast nook banquette hold?

One busy print is plenty. Build around it with solids pulled from its colors and with texture, such as a ruffle or a nubby weave. If you want a stripe as well, keep it to one small piece at a clearly different scale.

Should banquette pillows be cut from the seat cushion fabric?

Usually not when the seat is patterned. Solids pulled from the print work better: here a teal pillow picks up the palm leaves and a coral ruffled pillow repeats the small flowers, so the print stays the only pattern.

Where is seat depth measured on a banquette with a built-in back?

From the face of the backrest to the front edge of the seat, not from the wall. One buyer set the depth at 22 in (56 cm) because 24 in (61 cm) would have overhung the seat by 2 in (5 cm).

Is a 10-foot banquette cushion made as one long piece?

Not necessarily. In one order the 10 ft run arrived as two 5 ft pieces while the buyer expected full-length ones. Ask how the run will be split, and put the piece count beside every length in your order note before production.
