Navy Ticking on a White Hemnes Daybed, and Why the Piping Stays Quiet
A narrow stripe, white paint, oak boards. The piping decision here is to make no statement at all.

The quick answer
On a striped Hemnes daybed cover, choose self piping: the welt is cut from the same ticking, so the stripe carries the line and no contrast cord cuts across it. A narrow navy-and-cream stripe reads soft gray from across the room and tailored up close. Run the stripes front to back on mattress and backs, and wrap them around the bolsters.
Swatch strip: five colors, one quiet room
- Ticking navy#23314FThe stripe itself. Dark enough to hold its shape in daylight.
- Cream ground#EFE8D8Between the stripes. Warmer than the frame.
- Frame white#F5F5F1The daybed and the ladder shelf. Keeps the corner light.
- Oak board#B8895BThe floor. Warm wood under a cool stripe.
- Taupe wall#A69886Keeps the navy from feeling cold.
Self, contrast or none: what each does to a stripe
A white Hemnes daybed stands on oak boards beside a tall balcony door. The mattress, two back cushions and two bolsters all wear the same narrow ticking stripe, navy on cream. From the doorway it reads as soft gray. Up close, it is ticking.
The piping is self piping. The welt is cut from the same stripe. That is the decision this photograph is about.
Three choices, and what each does to the line. Our Pattern on matching, contrast or no piping has more.
- Self piping. The edge is defined, but the eye stays on the stripe. Right for pattern.
- Contrast piping. A navy or white cord draws a second outline around every piece. On a stripe, two sets of lines compete.
- No piping. A plain seam. Softer, a little less crisp at the corners of a box cover.
The stripes run front to back on the mattress, which makes a shallow daybed look deeper. The back cushions keep the same direction, so seat and back read as one surface. On the bolsters the stripe wraps around, and the round ends show neat rings. That takes careful cutting. The Pattern on stripe direction explains the layout.
The props are few. A white ladder shelf with books keeps the corner light beside a busy pattern. A sheer curtain softens the door. The cover stops above the drawers, so storage still opens. The taupe wall is warm enough that the navy never feels cold.
Leave a hand's width of floor. Here the oak does the rest.
A stripe is already a line. Piping is a line. Choose one to speak.
Five pins, one stripe
Five pins follow the stripe from mattress to bolster to the drawers left clear below.

- Ticking stripe mattress
Stripes run front to back on the mattress, which visually lengthens a shallow daybed.
- Striped bolster end
On the bolster the stripes wrap around, so the round end shows neat concentric lines.
- Striped back cushion
Back cushions keep the stripe vertical to match the seat, for one continuous flow.
- White ladder shelf
A light ladder shelf keeps the corner airy next to a busy pattern.
- Drawers left clear
The cover stops above the drawers so storage still opens freely.

Two stacked mattresses and no extra allowance
A buyer ordered a fitted cover for two stacked single mattresses, each about 79 x 31 1/2 in (200 x 80 cm), plus two back pillows about 39 1/2 in (100 cm) long at the default height and depth.
They measured the stack at about 9 1/2 in (24 cm) and asked whether to add a little extra. The workshop said no. That height is standard, and the fit was the workshop's job.
The set arrived as wanted. One piece had a patch of fraying, and the workshop offered a free new cover or a small refund.
The lesson is small and exact. Give the true stacked height. A good maker fits to the real number without padding it. What does your stack measure?
Buyer questions: the Full Set, a fitted-sheet cover and large sizes
- A common question
What exactly comes in the Hemnes daybed Full Set?
The workshop's answerOne fitted mattress cover (cover only, no foam), two lumbar back pillows with inserts, and two armrest bolsters with inserts. Two Full Sets give you two mattress covers, four back pillows and four bolsters. Order the Full Set and write your mattress size, for example about 37 x 77 x 12 in (94 x 195 x 31 cm), plus your body and trim codes, in personalization.
- A common question
Can you make a cover that fits like a fitted sheet, so a teenager can pull it off and use the bed as a daytime sofa?
The workshop's answerYes. The workshop first pointed to its ready-made convertible sofa bed, then confirmed it can make a custom cover and backrests for an existing bed. Send three numbers for the mattress plus topper: length, width and height.
- A common question
How are large daybed or floor-mattress cushions priced?
The workshop's answerMostly by footprint. Seat-only cushions from about 36 x 72 in (91 x 183 cm) up to about 31 1/2 x 96 in (80 x 243 cm) have been quoted in the low-to-mid hundreds of dollars. Send length, width and thickness for an exact quote.

On a striped Hemnes daybed cover, self piping lets the stripe carry the line; a contrast cord adds a second outline around every piece.

Questions buyers ask next
Does contrast piping suit a ticking stripe daybed?
Rarely. A stripe already draws lines, and a contrast cord adds a second outline around every piece. Self piping cut from the same ticking defines the edges while the stripe stays the main idea.
Which way should stripes run on a Hemnes mattress cover?
Front to back makes a shallow daybed look deeper. The back cushions should follow the same direction, so seat and back read as one surface. On bolsters, the stripe wraps around the roll.
Will a fitted daybed cover get in the way of the Hemnes drawers?
Not when it is made to the true mattress height. The cover in this photo stops above the drawer fronts, so the storage opens freely. Measure the stack as it is and add nothing.
Why does a narrow navy stripe look gray from across the room?
At a distance the eye blends the navy and cream bands into one mid-tone. That is why a fine ticking is easy to live with on a large piece: calm from the door, tailored when you sit down.
