A mauve corduroy entryway bench cushion, and the hand-finishing that makes it fit

Nate's notebook on a hall bench under a peg rail: the sliver of oak left showing, the nap, the self piping, and five checks you can make by hand when the box arrives.

A mauve cushion on a pale oak bench gives a plain hallway a soft spot to sit and lace up boots.

The quick answer

A custom bench cushion for an entryway should be cut to the bench top with a sliver of wood showing on each side, and its thickness should look balanced with the apron below. On corduroy, check that the welt runs straight and the nap shades the same way on every face. On the standard listing, 2 to 5 in thicknesses cost the same.

Notebook entry: one oak bench, one sliver of wood

A sliver of oak on each side of the cushion: that is the whole argument for a custom bench cushion, and this hallway makes it well.

Conditions: overcast daylight, cream walls, a pale oak hall bench with a lower shelf, an oak peg rail above. The cushion is cut to the bench top and stops just short of the edges. That reveal tells the eye the cushion was made for this bench, not for a bench like it. Its thickness is roughly the height of the apron below, so top and base read as a matched pair.

Color check. Dusty mauve corduroy and pale oak both carry pink undertones, so they agree. Gray throws folded on the lower shelf keep the pink from turning sweet. The olive parka and navy quilted jacket on the pegs give the soft color something darker to lean against. A wicker basket on the rail repeats the natural textures, and the sisal runner stays neutral so the cushion is the only color at floor level.

Craft check. In my uncle's shop the old hands judged a cushion by three things you can check without a tape: a straight welt, full corners, and a nap that shades the same way on every face. This one is self piped in the same mauve, so the welt reads as a soft line, not an outline. Corduroy is honest about its nap. Brush it one way and it darkens; brush it the other and it lightens. Every panel has to be cut facing the same direction, partner, or the box side and the top won't match in daylight.

One more note. An open shelf underneath means the cushion is always on show with whatever you store there, so pick a color that gets along with your baskets and throws.

Measure with how to measure a bench for a cushion, read corduroy wale and nap direction, and see more drop zones in mudroom and entryway bench cushions. The cloth is on the corduroy shelf. What lives on your bench's lower shelf?

Five hand-finishing checks when the box arrives

  1. Sight the welt

Set the cushion on the bench, crouch at one end and look down the front piping. It should run as straight as the bench edge, with no waves.

  2. Check the corners

Box corners should be filled out, with the side band standing square to the top. Soft, collapsed corners are worth a photo to the maker.

  3. Read the nap

Brush the top and the box side with a flat hand in the same direction. Both should shade the same way; corduroy shows a mismatch at once.

  4. Center the reveal

Slide the cushion until the sliver of wood is even left and right, within ± 1/4 in (6 mm). An even reveal is what makes it look built in.

  5. Give it time

If the cushion arrived vacuum-packed, let it recover before judging its size; foam and cover settle over the first days out of the box.

  2. Coats on peg rail

Navy and olive coats give the soft pink something darker to play against.

  3. Throws on the shelf

Gray throws underneath keep the mauve from looking too sweet.

  4. Basket on shelf

A basket overhead repeats the natural textures of the hallway.

  5. Sisal runner

A neutral runner lets the cushion be the only color at floor level.

Four 8-inch seats for a furniture maker

A furniture maker wrote to the workshop needing seats thicker than standard for a design client: two at 36 x 24 x 8 in (91 x 61 x 20 cm) and two at 24 x 22 x 8 in (61 x 56 x 20 cm), corduroy to be chosen.

Eight inches is deep for a seat cushion, so the first question was simply whether it could be done. The workshop confirmed 8 in (about 20 cm) was no problem and sent a custom quote. The schedule was 7 days of production plus 3 to 5 days of delivery, which mattered because the maker had a client date to hit.

Notebook takeaway: deep seats of 6 to 8 in are quoted one by one, so ask early and check the timeline against your deadline before you promise anyone a date.

The lesson: Deep seats of 6 to 8 in are custom-quoted; confirm lead time against a client deadline.

Buyer questions: thickness, a damp window and a 45° kitchen bench

  1. A common question

The listing says 4 inches but lets me pick other thicknesses. Does the price change if I go thinner or thicker?

    The workshop's answer

No. Thickness isn't a big cost factor, so 2, 3, 4 and 5 in (5, 7.5, 10 and 13 cm) are all the same price, and in-between sizes such as 2.5 in (6.5 cm) can be requested.

  2. A common question

My window seat sits against a single-pane window that runs with condensation. Which fabric wipes clean best?

    The workshop's answer

Velvet or the Soft Fabric range, which clean more easily than textured or absorbent weaves; Soft Fabric is the most practical if easy cleaning comes first. Both are upholstery fabrics, not waterproof, so wipe moisture away regularly and keep the cushion off a wet surface, since constant damp can bring mildew to any fabric.

  3. A common question

Our L-shaped kitchen bench has 45-degree front corners. Should it be one cushion or two?

    The workshop's answer

Send photos and a sketch with every measurement, and the workshop will advise. One such bench, drawn with ten measurements labeled A to J, including runs of about 100 in (255 cm) and 75.5 in (192 cm) and 5.3 in (13.5 cm) angled corners, was made as two cushions. The shop has made many of these.

Cut an entryway bench cushion to leave a sliver of wood showing on each side; that reveal is what makes a cushion look made, not bought.

Questions buyers ask next

How much wood should show around a hall bench cushion?

A sliver on each side, as here, reads as deliberate. Measure the bench top edge to edge and order to those numbers; a cushion that overhangs looks borrowed and catches on bags and coats as people pass.

Is corduroy a good choice for an entryway bench?

Corduroy gives a hall bench a warm, soft seat with visible texture. It is an indoor upholstery fabric, not waterproof, so keep dripping coats and wet boots off it and brush the nap back after cleaning.

What thickness suits a mudroom bench cushion?

Pick a thickness that roughly matches the apron or rail below, as this cushion does, so top and base balance. On the standard listing 2 to 5 in (5 to 13 cm) all cost the same, so choose by look and comfort.

Why does corduroy look two-toned on some cushions?

Nap. Corduroy's pile leans one way, so panels cut in different directions catch light differently. Every face of a cushion should be cut with the wale running the same way to keep the color even.
