A Reading by RosaWindow Seat Cushions
A magenta stripe under the eaves: a dormer window seat cushion that seats a crowd
No room for a backrest, no room for pillows, and still the spot everybody wants. Rosa reads an attic seat for the nights the whole family climbs the stairs.
SaveThe quick answer
A window seat cushion that seats guests well runs the full length of the seat, brings the top of the cushion to a comfortable height such as 18 in (46 cm) from the floor, and splits into equal sections on very long seats. Under a sloping ceiling, skip backrests and let one deep, firm cushion do the work.
Where everybody ends up
Pull up a chair, neighbor, though up here you won't need one. At every gathering I have ever hosted, the attic window seat filled up before the living room did.
This one is a long oak box under a small-paned dormer, and the ceiling slopes down on both sides in blush plaster. There is no room for a backrest or a row of pillows. So the cushion does all the work. It runs the full length of the box and is deep enough to curl up on, or to hold three cousins shoulder to shoulder.
The stripe is a bold magenta awning stripe on white. It pulls your eye down to the seat and away from those odd roof angles. Along the front, the stripes drop cleanly down the box edge, and self piping keeps the line tidy end to end. Warm oak below and blush plaster above take the shout out of the color.
The props tell you where to sit. A stack of old books and a white mug at the far end mark the spot with the best light. A small succulent in a wooden pot repeats the oak. A striped jute rug gives the overflow somewhere to land, because at a party somebody always ends up on the floor with their back against the seat.
For hosting, that is the whole trick: one long, firm cushion, a seat at the right height, and open floor in front. The dormer window seat Concept Sketch has more attic shapes, and the reading nook cushions show how the same seat works on quiet days.
Pinned by Rosa: stripe, gusset, books, succulent, box
Five pins walk the dormer from the magenta stripe and the striped gusset to the books and mug, the succulent on the sill and the oak storage box.

Hosting notes from my porch notebook
- Seat height is bench height plus cushion thickness. Write both numbers down before choosing foam.
- A 15 in (38 cm) bench with a 3 in (8 cm) cushion puts guests at 18 in (46 cm).
- On a very long seat, ask for equal sections. Halves are easier to lift, turn and share.
- Keep soft back pillows short: one 88 in (224 cm) pillow sags, two 44 in (112 cm) pillows stay plump.
- Order every cushion together. Once production starts, an extra one goes on its own order.
The bench that looked like a trapezoid
A renter sent the workshop a photo of her window bench with a tape measure laid across it. She wanted a cushion 14 in deep and 30 in long (36 x 76 cm), in emerald green.
In the photo the seat looked like a trapezoid. Cameras do that; tilt the phone a little and a rectangle leans. So the workshop offered to copy the shape from a paper drawing, just in case.
She checked. It was a plain rectangle. The workshop made a seat cushion only, with no back and no arms.
I tell this one to every host with a phone full of pictures. A photo shows the mood. Measured sides show the shape. When in doubt, send a sketch with every side written on it.

Buyer questions: long seats, late additions and a mudroom niche
- A common question
My window seat is more than 150 inches long. Will the cushion come as one piece or split?
The workshop's answerThe workshop asks which you prefer, and very long cushions can be split into equal halves. For soft back pillows the advice is firmer: one 88 in (224 cm) pillow would sag in the middle, so two 44 in (112 cm) pillows are recommended.
- A common question
I already placed my order. Can I add one more cushion to it?
The workshop's answerPlace a separate order for the extra cushion. Once the first order is in production, keeping them apart avoids mix-ups in a queue of hundreds of orders. If you have not ordered yet, the workshop can build one custom listing that bundles everything, with shipping handled together.
- A common question
What size cushion should I order for a mudroom bench niche?
The workshop's answerFor a niche 17 x 35.75 in (43 x 91 cm) and 15 in (38 cm) high, a 3 in (8 cm) cushion gives an 18 in (46 cm) seat height. Select 17 in width, 36 in length and 3 in thickness in the menu, then write the exact 17 x 35.75 x 3 in in the note. Production took about a week, with 3 to 5 days of delivery.
Bench height plus cushion thickness equals seat height: a 15 in bench with a 3 in window seat cushion seats guests at 18 in.

Questions buyers ask next
Does a window seat under a sloping attic ceiling need a backrest?
Usually not, and often there is no room for one. Choose a deeper, firmer seat cushion instead, so guests can sit sideways, lean on the window wall or tuck their feet up. One plump pillow at the end is enough for leaning.
Is a bold stripe too much for a small attic room?
Not if everything around it is quiet. A single saturated stripe pulls the eye to the seat and away from awkward roof angles. Keep the nearby surfaces to natural wood and plain plaster, so the color has room to breathe.
Can sections of a long window seat cushion double as floor seating?
Yes, if you order the seat in equal sections. Each piece lifts off on a busy night and goes back in line afterward. Write the exact length of every section in the personalization note, so they butt together neatly.
