A harlequin outdoor bench cushion, and how it holds the bench

Navy pillows, a bright seat, a weathered wall, a grill nearby. One question under all of it: what keeps a box cushion in place?

The quick answer

A custom bench cushion on a smooth slab stays put with a non-slip base, a grippy fabric covering the whole underside; on slats or a frame with gaps, corner ties sewn into the seam do the job. Either way, the zipper goes on the back edge facing the wall, where it stays hidden.

Reading the deck bench

A cushion that slides every time someone sits down sideways has a fastening problem, not a fabric problem.

On a summer deck, two navy knife-edge pillows lean on a weathered board wall above a harlequin box cushion in navy, red, green and white, on a wooden slab bench.

The navy pillows drop back into the shade of the gray boards and let the seat take the light. Right way round.

At the front of the boxing, the diamonds run unbroken around the side band, so the pattern was matched before cutting. The piping is cut from the print itself, which is why the cord shows short bars of navy, red and green. No new color.

Behind: a plain wood folding table, a kettle grill, potted herbs. This is overflow seating; the pillows can walk to the chairs when the table fills.

A slab bench is smooth, and a box cushion on smooth wood wanders. Is your bench a solid slab or a row of slats, friend? See ties or a non-slip base, where the zipper goes, bench cushions and outdoor acrylic.

A real project

One cushion, two hinges, and the arms of a bench

A buyer wrote in about an outdoor bench whose arms are joined to the seat. They wanted one long seat cushion with two hinges, so the ends fold up onto the inside of the arms.

The workshop drew it at 74 3/4 x 23 5/8 in (190 x 60 cm) in three sections of 13 3/4, 47 1/4 and 13 3/4 in (35, 120 and 35 cm), with two back cushions at 17 3/4 x 23 5/8 in (45 x 60 cm), in outdoor fabric.

The buyer found the quote more than expected and didn't order. The idea is still worth keeping: fold seams let one cushion wrap onto the arms of a bench, and a cushion that climbs the arms has less room to wander.

The lesson: Fold seams let one cushion wrap onto the arms of a bench.

Bench shapes

  1. A common question

Can a bench seat and its two side backrests be made as one connected piece?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop quoted it in separate sections, two at 15 3/4 x 19 3/4 in (40 x 50 cm) and one at 15 3/4 x 63 in (40 x 160 cm), and asked the buyer to confirm each size before giving a total.

  2. A common question

My trapezoid window seat is about 79 in (200 cm) long. One big cushion, or two smaller ones?

    The workshop's answer

Two. The angled sides can make one long piece bend or shift, while two fit more snugly, look neater and come off more easily for cleaning. One piece is still possible, measured as five sides, A to E, with self piping.

  3. A common question

Do you have plaid or tartan fabric for a bench cushion?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, plaids and tartans in brown, green, blue and red tones. The workshop sends the chart page to choose from.

A box cushion on a smooth slab bench needs a non-slip base; a cushion on slats needs corner ties. The bench top picks the fastening.

Questions buyers ask next

Will a non-slip base mark a wooden deck bench?

It shouldn't. The non-slip base is a fabric backing, not rubber or adhesive, and it grips by friction without leaving residue. It covers the whole underside, so the cushion becomes one-sided, pattern always up.

Where do ties go on an outdoor bench cushion?

On the back corners, sewn into the seam, so they knot around a slat, a leg or the frame; four corner ties can knot under a bench with gaps. A solid slab has nothing to tie to.

Why does a cushion zipper sit on the back edge?

Because the back edge faces the wall, where the zipper stays out of sight, and the cover opens around the corners so the foam slides out. On an odd-shaped cushion, a photo shows which side is the back.
