Plate Crossed Piping Stack: Teal and Blush Cushions with Ikat Middle

Blush with navy piping, a cocoa diamond weave, and teal with cream piping: one palette crossed three ways.

A custom bench cushion trio with crossed piping, tested against family life

Three cushions, one oak bench, and a piping trick I'd have stolen years ago. Then the question every family asks me: how will they look in a year?

The quick answer

Crossed piping gives the pale cushion a dark cord borrowed from the dark cushion, and the dark cushion a pale cord borrowed from the pale one, so separate custom bench cushions read as one set. For family life, the two-tone patterned cushion forgives the most, and the pale blush one shows spills and dark hair first.

Plate notes: the crossed stack, pinned

Five pins, from the navy cord on blush down to the oak bench top.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

Reading the stack from top to bottom

Swap two piping colors and three separate cushions become a set. That is the whole trick in this photograph.

Three box cushions sit stacked on an oak bench. The top one is blush with a navy cord. The bottom one is deep teal with a cream cord. Each borrows its outline from the other, so the pair crosses over.

The middle cushion is a diamond weave in cocoa and cream, a jacquard that holds both the pale and the dark. It is the bridge. Without it, the swap would look like an ordering mistake.

Behind the stack: a cream shiplap wall, golden side light from the window, a Berber-style rug, and one olive branch in a stoneware vase for a live green note. The oak underneath shows how each fabric reads on wood, which is the question to ask of your own bench. A straight welt is a kind of honesty, and all three of these are straight. More shapes live under bench cushions, and the woven family under jacquard and damask.

Now the family test. Who sits on your bench most: a grown-up with coffee, a child with crayons, or a dog? Start there, then read kid-friendly cushion fabric and pet-friendly cushion fabric.

Maggie's family-bench checklist

  • Put the pale blush cushion where the grown-ups sit. It shows a juice spot before the other two do.
  • Give the kids' end to the cocoa and cream diamond. A two-tone weave hides crumbs and small marks better than a solid.
  • Match the dog. Dark hair shows on blush, pale hair shows on deep teal, and the diamond forgives both.
  • The window end of a bench gets the most sun. Swap the cushions around now and then so one doesn't age alone.
  • Measure a vacuum-packed cushion only after 3 to 4 days out of the bag.
A real project

A 94-inch cushion that measured 91 out of the bag

A buyer in the US ordered a 16 x 94 in (41 x 239 cm) cushion for a long window bench. Straight out of the vacuum packing it measured 15.5 x 91 in. The workshop explained that compressed foam takes 3 to 4 days to fully expand. After 5 days it was still 91.75 in.

The buyer sent a photo with a tape measure along the edge, and that settled it. The workshop remade the cushion at 16 x 94 in and let them keep the first one. Wait the days, then photograph the tape. Nobody argues with a photo.

Curves, narrow widths and one more crossed pair

  1. A common question

Could the ends of my bench cushion curve, with the back edge longer than the front?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. For a curved willow sofa the workshop made a 32 in (81 cm) deep base, 68 in (173 cm) along the back and 63 in (160 cm) along the front, with the ends curving between the two. It was linen color 14 with silicone filling, 4 in (10 cm) thick.

  2. A common question

Your listing starts at 12 in wide, but I need an 11 in cushion. Is that possible?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Pick the closest width in the dropdown and write the real size, 11 in (28 cm) wide, in the personalization box. The cushion is cut to the personalized measurements.

  3. A common question

Which velvet colors would give me a navy, slate blue and terracotta look?

    The workshop's answer

For one cushion, deep navy 131 with burnt terracotta 112 piping; for the other, teal blue 129 with deep navy 131 piping. Expect a slight tone difference from the lighting in photos.

Crossed piping makes separate cushions a set: a navy cord on the blush cushion, a cream cord on the deep teal one, and a two-tone weave between them.

Questions buyers ask next

What does crossed piping mean on a set of cushions?

Two cushions swap colors at the edge: the pale one gets a cord matching the dark cushion's body, and the dark one gets a cord matching the pale body. A third, patterned cushion containing both colors ties the pair together.

Which cushion color hides pet hair best?

The one closest to your pet's coat. Dark hair shows on pale blush and pale hair shows on deep teal. A two-tone woven pattern, like a cocoa and cream diamond, hides both better than a solid.

How long should I wait before judging a vacuum-packed bench cushion's size?

At least 3 to 4 days out of the packaging. If it is still short after that, photograph a tape measure along the edge and send it; that photo is what gets a remake decided.
