A teal striped bench cushion, wall to wall, and the pair that didn't match

A floating walnut bench, a plaster alcove, a stripe that holds every cool color in the room. And two cushions that should have been twins.

Cool teal and gray stripes on a floating walnut bench, picked up by the ink artwork hanging just above.

The quick answer

A striped bench cushion for an alcove should be cut to the alcove's own wall-to-wall length, with self piping so the edge doesn't fight the stripe. If a pair ordered at the same thickness arrives at two heights, let the foam recover, measure away from the piping, then unzip and measure the foam itself.

A cushion that fills the alcove, wall to wall

Two cushions ordered at 3 in thick should both sit at 3 in.

The cushion runs wall to wall in a limewashed plaster alcove, so the floating walnut board looks as though a carpenter built it around the cushion. It only works when the cushion is cut to the alcove. Measure the bench, not the cushion you used to have.

The stripes run lengthwise and hold every cool color in the room: teal from the ink abstract above, aqua for lift, slate gray from the plaster, cream to rest the eye. Chenille's velvety yarn catches the window light and gives each stripe a faint glow.

The piping is self, cut from the same chenille. I once put a contrast welt on a stripe like this and watched the cord and stripe argue for a week. Never again.

The props, by usefulness. The gray bouclé lumbar picks up the darkest stripe; the oatmeal square adds the only warmth, so nothing goes chilly. The teal print is the color source: choose the art first, then the stripe. The monstera softens hard lines, the walnut shelf with cream vases and eucalyptus repeats the wood higher up, and the Berber rug keeps the floor quiet.

Stripe direction depends on how the fabric comes off the roll, so say which way it should run before anything is cut; see stripe direction, bench cushions and jacquard and damask. Which color in your room would you build a stripe around?

  1. Cool jewel stripe cushion

Teal, aqua and gray stripes are cool enough to sit calmly against gray limewash.

  2. Gray bouclé lumbar

The gray pillow picks up the darkest stripe and keeps the scheme tonal.

  3. Oatmeal square pillow

An oatmeal pillow adds warmth so the cool palette does not feel cold.

  4. Teal ink art

The teal abstract print is the color source for the stripe's brightest thread.

  5. Monstera plant

Big green leaves soften the alcove's hard lines.

The pair that didn't match

One buyer wrote in about two bench cushions, both ordered at 3 in (7.5 cm) thick, meant to sit side by side. They arrived at visibly different heights.

Our first answer, and I'd give it again: vacuum-packed foam needs time to recover, and thickness is measured away from the piping, because the cord adds a little at the seam. The buyer waited 60 hours, then did exactly what I would have done: opened the zipper and measured the foam. One insert was about 3 1/2 to 4 in (9 to 10 cm). Wrong foam, plain as day.

The workshop owned it and sent one new 3 in (7.5 cm) insert to swap in through the zipper. No new cover; a stretched cover relaxes back once the right insert goes in.

The lesson: A zippered cover means a wrong insert can be fixed by shipping foam alone.

Maggie's arrival checklist for a pair

  • Unpack both together and allow the same recovery: 36 to 48 hours, corners up to 72.
  • Measure thickness in the middle, away from the piping.
  • Compare heights side by side on one flat surface.
  • Still different? Unzip and measure the foam, not the cover.
  • Photograph the tape on each insert and send both pictures.

What bench buyers asked before ordering

  1. A common question

Delivery on my long window seat cushion came to more than I expected at checkout. Can anything be done?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop can look again at the delivery charge on a large item and bring it down to the lowest rate it can offer for that size.

  2. A common question

Does the price include the foam insert, or only the cover?

    The workshop's answer

A standard order includes the cover and the high-density foam insert, ready to use. A cover on its own is a separate, cheaper option.

  3. A common question

Handles stick out into my window seat. Can the cushion be shaped around them?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The workshop can cut a custom shape around obstacles for about 10 percent more than the plain rectangle, as it did for a 13 x 92 in linen window seat cushion.

If two bench cushions ordered at 3 in arrive at different heights, unzip them and measure the foam itself, away from the piping.

Questions buyers ask next

Should the piping on a striped bench cushion match the stripe?

Usually, yes. Self piping cut from the stripe outlines the box without adding another color, while a contrast cord runs against the stripe all the way down the bench. If you want contrast, take it from the darkest stripe.

When is a vacuum-packed bench cushion ready to measure?

Most take 36 to 48 hours to expand, and corners up to 72. Measure after that, in the middle and away from the piping, with both cushions on one flat surface.

Can a chenille bench cushion go on a covered porch?

Chenille isn't recommended for permanent outdoor use or humid climates. For a porch bench choose an outdoor acrylic, which is UV-resistant and water-repellent, and keep chenille for indoor alcoves and hallways.
