A mauve-striped bench pad on an oak waterfall bench, ready for a full house

Most days this bench holds a mug. On a full-house evening it holds people. Here is how I'd make one striped pad do both jobs well.

The quick answer

A bench cushion for hosting should be slim, firm and cut to the bench top, so guests sit level and a mug can rest on it between visits. Measure every seating run separately, pick the next larger size range if your width falls between two, and write your exact size in the personalization note.

A heavy bench, a slim pad, and why

Count the seats in your living room, then count your guests. The gap is where a bench like this earns its keep.

The bench is oak with chunky waterfall legs, slab sides that turn straight down to the floor. That is visually heavy, so the pad stays slim. A thick cushion here would look top-heavy, like a hat a size too big. Slim and firm reads modern and seats a guest level instead of sinking them.

The mug on the seat is the proof. A pad firm enough to hold a cup steady is firm enough to perch on for an evening. That is the hosting test I'd give any bench cushion that doubles as extra seating.

Mauve and cream stripes run across the depth, front to back. They bring soft color to a white room without shouting, and their rhythm echoes the wide oak floorboards. The cloth is a woven chenille from our jacquard and damask family, and a mid-tone ground like mauve forgives scuffs that plain cream would show by the first party.

The props fill what a low bench leaves empty. A fiddle leaf fig in a concrete pot takes up the height. One black-framed line-art print, hung right above, anchors the bench to the wall.

Same bench in a hallway? See entryway bench cushions. Measure the bench, not the cushion you used to have.

Swatch strip: mauve, cream, oak and one black line

Five chips from the photograph. The black is the smallest and does the most.

  • Mauve taupe#9C8582The stripe: color that doesn't shout
  • Cream#EDE6DAThe stripe's partner, and the white room
  • Oak#A8845CSlab legs and wide floorboards
  • Fig green#4E6A3BThe only living color, and the tallest
  • Frame black#1E1E1EOne thin line above the bench

  1. Mauve stripe pad

Soft mauve stripes add color to a white room without shouting.

  2. Mug on the seat

A single mug shows the pad is firm enough to rest a cup on.

  3. Oak slab legs

Chunky waterfall legs balance the slim cushion and keep the look modern.

  4. Fiddle leaf fig

A tall plant fills the height a low bench leaves empty.

  5. Line-art print

One black-framed print sits right above the bench and anchors it to the wall.

A real project

Three seating runs, one house, one architect

A buyer in the US brought us a whole house of built-in seating, drawn up by their architect: a primary bench, a family room bench and a three-part living room run, all 6 in (15 cm) thick, plus backs and small cylinder pillows.

The sizes were exact to the eighth: 89.25 x 25.5 in (227 x 65 cm), 21.125 x 76 in (54 x 193 cm), and living room pieces of 52.25, 104.875 and 52.5 in (133, 266 and 133 cm), about 19 in (48 cm) deep. The workshop confirmed the backrests, shared every fabric chart through a drive link, and advised measuring each backrest from the top of the seat cushion.

They leaned toward linen L01 with L19 piping and asked about a terracotta linen for the welt. The quoted timeline was 2 to 5 business days to make, plus 2 to 5 to deliver.

For hosting, that is the method: every run measured on its own, backs decided from the cushion up.

Sizes
89.25 x 25.5 x 6 in; 21.125 x 76 x 6 in; 52.25 x 18.875, 104.875 x 18.875 and 52.5 x 19 in

The lesson: For whole-house projects, measure every run separately and decide backrest height from the top of the seat cushion.

Buyer questions: close colors, spare fabric, in-between sizes

  1. A common question

    What's the difference between P-50 and P-51, and between N06 and N09?

    The workshop's answer

P-50 is creamier and warmer, a soft ivory; P-51 is cooler and more neutral, a very light greige. N06 is a dark navy very close to black, and N09 is black. With thin stripes the difference barely shows on screen, so the workshop sends a photo taken under light.

  2. A common question

Can I buy extra fabric to match my cushion for another project?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The workshop sold one buyer about 2.2 yards (2 m) of the same fabric, shipped with the cushion, for a matching upholstery project.

  3. A common question

My width falls between two size ranges. Which one do I pick?

    The workshop's answer

Pick the next larger range, for example 24 to 26 in for a 23.5 in (60 cm) width, and write your exact size in the personalization note.

A bench cushion for guests should be firm enough to hold a mug steady. If a cup sits level on the pad, a guest will too.

Questions buyers ask next

Should a guest bench cushion be thick or thin on a chunky frame?

Slim and firm. On a heavy frame like a waterfall bench, a thick cushion looks top-heavy and lets guests sink. A firm pad seats them level, holds a mug between visits and keeps the bench looking modern.

Which way should stripes run on a long bench pad?

Across the depth, front to back, is the usual choice on a long bench, because a stripe running the full length needs a seam or a railroaded cloth. Here the mauve stripes also echo the floorboards below.

Can the same striped bench pad move to an entryway later?

Yes. In a hallway, a stripe on a mid-tone ground like mauve hides scuffs better than plain cream, and a firm pad suits the daily sit-down to pull on boots. Measure the new bench before you move it.
