A cream and taupe striped window seat cushion, wall to wall in a bedroom niche, and what keeps it in place

Rosa keeps a notebook on every nook she reads. This entry is a sunny plaster reveal beside a linen bed, and the small question of what holds a cushion where there's nothing to tie it to.

A made-to-measure striped cushion turns a deep bedroom window reveal into a sunny seat beside the bed.

The quick answer

A window seat cushion in a plaster niche stays put by fit, not ties: cut it wall to wall to the exact niche length, and add a non-slip base if it still creeps. There are no posts to tie to in a reveal. Measure both ends, since niches are rarely square, and expect finished sizes to vary by about 1 in (2.5 cm).

Notebook entry: the niche, the stripe and the linen bed

Afternoon sun, white plaster, one striped cushion. Pull up a chair, because this little window has more to teach than it lets on.

Proportion. The cushion runs wall to wall, the full length of the niche, with no gap at either end. That's what makes it look built in rather than set down. The thick box edge shows its depth along the front, so you know it's a real seat and not a pad.

The stripe. Wide cream and taupe bands in a woven jacquard run front to back and wrap down the box side. They echo the vertical folds of the sheer linen curtain and make a shallow ledge look deeper than it is. Self piping keeps the edge quiet. More weaves like it sit on the jacquard and damask shelf.

Light and room. Warm sun across white plaster, white linen on the bed. The stripe is the only pattern in view, and it's soft enough not to holler at the pillows.

The props. One glass vase of dried bunny-tail grass on the sill. Just one. A narrow ledge crowds fast, and anything more ends up on the cushion by bedtime. The sheer curtain softens the light on the seat. Other quiet rooms are gathered under bedroom cushions.

Now, the fastening question. In a plaster reveal there are no posts, no slats, nothing to tie to. So the cushion has to hold by fit. What's under and around your sill?

Pinned by Rosa: five notes in the margin

The pins start at the wall-to-wall seat and its striped box side, then climb to the vase, the curtain and the white bed beside it.

  1. Wall-to-wall cushion

The cushion is cut to the exact niche length so it looks built in rather than placed.

  2. Striped box side

The stripe wraps down the box edge, showing the depth of a proper sitting cushion.

  3. Dried grass vase

One small vase on the sill is enough; more would crowd a narrow ledge.

  4. Sheer linen curtain

The curtain's vertical folds echo the front-to-back stripe of the cushion.

  5. White linen bed

Plain white bedding lets the soft stripe be the only pattern in view.

Two sills, one AC unit and a 2-inch decision

A mom in the US wrote to the workshop about two window sills in her daughter's apartment. Wise move: she ordered fabric samples first, before a single cushion.

Once the swatches came she picked K-31 for the body with K-1 piping, a light blue, and sent a photo of the rug so the workshop could confirm the pair. The two sills were different sizes, so each cushion got its own measurements.

Here's the notebook detail I love. One sill sits above an air conditioning unit, and that limits how tall a cushion can be there. So she kept both at 2 in (5 cm): matching heights, a low profile, clear of the unit.

Check for anything in the way before you choose thickness, neighbor: AC units, radiators, window cranks, latches. The window seat thickness Pattern walks through 2 to 5 inches, the ties or non-slip Pattern settles the grip, and zipper placement explains the back-edge habit. More seats live under window seat cushions.

Buyer questions: size wiggle room, extra yardage and an L on the patio

  1. A common question

How exact is the finished size? I'd rather it come out a little small than too big.

    The workshop's answer

Sizes can vary by about 1 in (2.5 cm). When a buyer said 24 in (61 cm) was the absolute maximum, the workshop made the cushion 23 in (58 cm).

  2. A common question

Can I buy extra fabric to match my cushion for another project?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The workshop sold one buyer about 2.2 yards (2 m) of the same fabric, sent along with the cushion, for a matching upholstery project.

  3. A common question

My L-shaped outdoor couch is 84 x 84 inches and 28 inches deep. Can you quote seats only, and seats with backs?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. At the standard 4 in (10 cm) height, the two seat cushions that form the L were quoted first, and adding the back cushions raised the set by roughly a third. Ask for both figures so you can compare.

A window seat cushion in a plaster niche has nothing to tie to, so it holds by fit: wall to wall, measured at both ends, with a non-slip base if it creeps.

Questions buyers ask next

Can a window seat cushion in a plaster niche be tied down?

Usually not, because a niche has no posts or slats to tie around. Cut the cushion to the exact niche length so it can't slide, and ask for an anti-slip fabric base if it still creeps on a painted board.

Which edge should hold the zipper on a niche window seat cushion?

Ask for it along the back edge, against the window, so the front edge everyone sees stays clean. On a niche cushion the back is also the side you touch least, so the zipper stays out of the way of legs and hands.

Why measure both ends of a window niche?

Plaster niches are rarely square, so the length at the front and back, and the depth at each end, can differ. A snug fit is what makes the cushion look built in, and the workshop can only cut to the numbers you send.
