A Letter About Cream Velvet, a Fuchsia Welt and a Seat Fitted Wall to Wall

Rosa writes to a buyer weighing velvet for a bedroom window seat: what the cloth is like under the hand, and what it asks in return.

The quick answer

A cream velvet window seat cushion feels soft and warm under the hand and shows which way its pile was brushed, so it suits a bedroom seat better than a busy mudroom. Fit it wall to wall with only a finger's gap at each end, measure the width at both back and front, and outline it with a solid piping.

Dear neighbor,

Dear neighbor, about the cream velvet

You asked whether velvet is too fussy for a window seat, so I am sending the photograph I keep coming back to. It was taken from straight above, looking down into a bedroom alcove.

There is a window seat cushion in cream velvet, one uninterrupted top panel from wall to wall. A thin line of fuchsia piping runs all the way around it. From above, that welt draws the seat like a pencil outline, and it picks up the pale pink rug below, laid centered and parallel so it repeats the rectangle in a softer color. Blush curtains hang at either side. Limed floorboards. A window onto a lawn.

Now look at the ends. Only a finger's gap at each wall. That is what made-to-measure should look like, and it only happens when somebody measures the width at the back and again at the front, because older walls are rarely square. Mine never are.

The cream reads warm in even daylight, and the fuchsia keeps it from going sleepy. A bolder hand would have piled on pillows. Whoever made this room left the seat bare so the outline could do the talking, and I think they were right.

Five pins, read from straight above, show how a fitted seat, a thin fuchsia line and a pink rug make one quiet rectangle.

How velvet feels, wears and cleans on a seat you use

Now to the question you came with. Velvet has a pile, short fibers standing up from the weave, and that pile is why it feels warm under your palm and why it catches light differently depending on which way you brush it. Sit on it, stand up, and you may see where you were for a minute. Some people love that. My grandmother called it the chair remembering you.

A bedroom window seat is kind to velvet. Nobody drops muddy boots on it, and the dog, if you have one, probably isn't allowed upstairs anyway. Cream shows a spill sooner than a darker shade would, so blot right away and never rub against the pile. Our Pattern on velvet bench cushion care walks through it step by step, and measuring a window seat covers the back-and-front trick.

If you would rather have a natural fiber, I asked the workshop: the striped fabrics are 100% cotton. But for that soft hand and that glow, velvet is the one. How often will you really sit in that window, with a book and a cup of coffee?

A real project

Two patterned velvets and a piping color from another range

A household wrote to the workshop about a U-shaped kitchen corner bench, roughly 79 x 79 x 39 in (2 x 2 x 1 m) along its three runs. They were torn between two patterned velvets: one with green piping, one with bordeaux.

The workshop had no photo of either exact pairing, so it sent professional close-ups of both fabrics. Then it explained the catch. Those patterned velvets come in no solid colors, so piping from the same cloth is usually the advice. A green or bordeaux welt would have to come from a solid velvet range instead.

That is the same thinking behind the fuchsia line in my photograph: a solid piping on a solid seat, chosen on purpose. With a pattern, ask which solids pair well before you fall for a color.

Buyer questions: natural fibers, split cushions and a built-in not yet built

  1. A common question

Do you have any fabrics that are 100% natural fiber, like cotton or linen?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The striped fabrics are 100% cotton.

  2. A common question

Would the window seat cost less if the cushion were split into two separate pieces?

    The workshop's answer

No. The price stays the same, because it follows the total size, and two pieces covering the same area cost the same as one.

  3. A common question

Our built-in isn't installed yet. Can you wait for final measurements before making the cushion?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Even if the order has already gone into production, the workshop can hold it until you send the final size after installation, for example updated to about 25 x 39 1/2 in (64 x 100 cm), and then carry on.

A made-to-measure window seat cushion should leave only a finger's gap at each wall; measure the alcove at the back and the front, since old walls are rarely square.

Questions buyers ask next

Is velvet a sensible fabric for a bedroom window seat?

Yes, more so than for a kitchen or mudroom bench. A bedroom seat sees gentle use: reading, sitting, a cup of coffee. Velvet's pile stays handsome there, and small marks can be brushed back the way the nap runs.

Why measure a window alcove at both the back and the front?

Older walls are rarely square, so an alcove can be wider at the back than at the front, or the other way around. Measuring both lets the cushion fit wall to wall with only a finger's gap at each end.

What piping color suits a cream velvet seat cushion?

Pick one color already in the room and use it as a thin outline. Here fuchsia echoes a pale pink rug and blush curtains. On a patterned velvet, the piping has to come from a solid range instead.

Will cream velvet show marks where people sit?

It can, because the pile lies down under weight and catches the light differently. Brush it lightly with the nap and it lifts again. Blot spills at once and never rub them into the pile.
