A burgundy Hemnes daybed cover, seen from above
An overhead photograph is an honest one. You see the fit, the joins, and how a matte cloth takes the evening light.
The quick answer
A Hemnes daybed cover in linen-look fabric gives the matte, slubby look of linen in a polyester weave that wrinkles and shrinks less than pure linen and cleans more easily. Measure your own mattresses stacked, and give the length, width and combined height. In a full set, the back cushions and bolsters are sized from those numbers automatically.
The view a tailor wants
This photograph is taken from above. That is the angle I trust most for a daybed.
From here, fit has nowhere to hide. The mattress top lies flat, with no ripples at the corners. The two back cushions meet in the middle without a gap. Each bolster sits tight against its arm, so it will not roll. The ivory piping draws every join, which makes all three checks easy.
The cloth is a burgundy linen-look weave. It is matte. It has the slub of linen, the small thick places in the thread, but it is polyester, so it creases less and keeps its size in the wash. In dusk light a matte red goes deep and quiet. A velvet in the same color would shine along every edge.
The room around it is kept small. Plants in three places: a pothos trailing by the window, a zamioculcas on the sill, a dracaena in terracotta. The green answers the red from every side. One floor lamp. Oak frames on the wall that repeat the lamp base and the pots. A white radiator, left as it is.
A deep color in a small bedroom needs this kind of company. The cloth does the rest by staying matte.
Measure the mattress, not the label. Let the piping show the joins. Give a deep color some green.

Two mattresses, one cover
A buyer wrote in about two IKEA Morgedal foam mattresses, each about 35 1/2 x 74 3/4 x 7 in (90 x 190 x 18 cm). They wanted them stacked and used as a sofa by day, under one removable cover.
The workshop confirmed a single zippered cover for the whole block, about 35 1/2 x 74 3/4 x 14 in (90 x 190 x 36 cm). It was ordered as a daybed cover, cover only, with the exact size and the fabric code written in the note.
One cover. One zipper. One block that sits like a sofa cushion. The same thinking runs through our notes on measuring stacked mattresses.
- Sizes
- About 35 1/2 x 74 3/4 x 14 in (90 x 190 x 36 cm), two mattresses stacked
The lesson: A fitted zippered cover can turn two stacked mattresses into a daybed sofa.
What daybed owners asked
- A common question
If I order the full Hemnes set, do I still give sizes for the back pillows and bolsters?
The workshop's answerNo. The back pillows and the bolster armrests are made automatically from your mattress cover measurements. You choose either the mattress cover alone or the full set with backrests and armrests, and the price changes with the option.
- A common question
Can you make a daybed cover that goes on and off like a fitted sheet, so my teenager can turn the bed into a sofa each morning?
The workshop's answerYes. The workshop can make a custom cover and backrests for a bed you already own. Send three numbers for the mattress plus any topper: length, width and height.
- A common question
We have cats and small kids. Is velvet a sensible choice, and can it go in the washer?
The workshop's answerYes. The workshop's velvet has a tight weave that resists snags from claws, it spot-cleans easily, and its covers machine wash at 86°F (30°C). For one designer's client with cats and small children, the workshop recommended velvet over linen. Heavier pet-bed fabrics exist, but they are too stiff to look or feel right as a slipcover.
A daybed cover passes the overhead test when the top lies flat, the two back cushions meet without a gap, and each bolster sits tight to its arm.

Questions buyers ask next
Is linen-look fabric real linen?
No. Linen-look is polyester woven to copy the slubby texture and matte color of linen. It wrinkles less, shrinks less and cleans more easily than pure linen. Ask for the fiber content if natural fiber matters to you.
What size mattresses does a US Hemnes daybed take?
Two twin mattresses of 38 1/4 x 74 1/2 in (97 x 189 cm), stacked for sitting. Fit guides suggest keeping each to about 5 to 6 in (13 to 15 cm) thick. Measure the mattresses you own, since same-name sizes vary.
Why is a fitted daybed cover cut a little under the mattress thickness?
So it fits snugly. A cover cut slightly under the measured thickness pulls the top flat, with no ripples at the corners, which is exactly what an overhead photo of a well-fitted set shows.
How tall are the back cushions in a Hemnes set?
About 20 in (50 cm), made in proportion to the mattress set. A full set also holds the fitted mattress cover and two bolsters for the arms, and you do not give separate sizes for any of them.
