  1. Round bolster end

The bolster end is cut as a flat disc with cream piping so it matches the mattress edge exactly.

  2. Cream contrast piping

One pale cord runs the full length of the top seam and picks up the white Hemnes frame.

  3. Second bolster at the back

A matching bolster at the far end turns the daybed into a sofa with two armrests.

  4. Oversized back cushions

Two big back cushions in the same weave give support without adding a new color.

  5. Hemnes drawer front

The cushion stops flush with the frame, so the drawers below still open freely.

A crimson Hemnes daybed cover with cream piping, proportioned for sitting and sleeping

A daybed is a bed that has to sit well. Its proportion comes down to three numbers: how thick, how deep, and how far back you lean.

The quick answer

A Hemnes daybed cover sits like a sofa when the mattress rises just above the frame and the back cushions take up enough depth. On a 38 1/4 in (97 cm) deep mattress, 12 in (30 cm) deep back pillows leave about 26 in (67 cm) to sit on. Keep the cover flush with the frame so the drawers still open.

Three numbers, one daybed

The mattress sits just above the white frame. That small rise is the first number.

It lets the crimson read as one solid block against painted wood and a dark oak-look floor. A single cream cord runs the length of the top seam, then circles both bolster ends. Three pieces, one line. The pale piping repeats the white of the IKEA Hemnes daybed frame, so nothing new enters the room.

The second number is depth. A daybed mattress is deep enough to sleep on, which is too deep to sit against a wall. Two oversized back cushions in the same flecked linen-look weave bring the backrest forward. The bolsters at each end act as armrests.

The third number is clearance. The cover stops flush with the frame, so the drawers below open freely.

Height is a feeling. So is depth. Do you sit on your daybed more than you sleep on it? The measuring guide for Hemnes covers starts with that question.

A real project

Straight backs, not L-shaped

A buyer in the US had two stacked IKEA mattresses measuring 74 3/8 x 38 1/4 x 9 1/2 in (189 x 97 x 24 cm). They wanted a brick corduroy mattress cover and back pillows along the back only. The usual set has L-shaped backrests that wrap the sides, so a straight-only version was agreed.

The first shipment arrived in indigo, with L-shaped pillows. The workshop remade it in brick, with straight 36 x 12 in (91 x 30 cm) pillows and new fillings. The buyer loved the result.

Write it down. L-shaped or straight. Length and depth.

The lesson: Confirm in writing whether backrests are L-shaped or straight, and give the straight pillow's length and depth.

Daybed questions, answered

  1. A common question

I only need the zippered mattress cover for a twin or full daybed, no pillows. Can I order that?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. A twin cover 8.5 in (22 cm) thick with piping and a full-size cover 9 to 10 in (23 to 25 cm) thick without pillows have both been made. Choose the mattress cover option, write your main and piping color codes, and ask for the current processing time with your order.

  2. A common question

What is inside the cushions, and should I worry about the materials?

    The workshop's answer

The interior is high-density upholstery foam, and the fabrics come from a mill certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (03.T.3239). If you have a specific allergy or certification concern, ask the workshop before you order.

  3. A common question

Does the Hemnes daybed cover price include the backrests and side cushions?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The set covers the mattress cover plus the backrests and armrests, made to the exact size of the Hemnes daybed and the IKEA mattress that comes with it. The mattress cover can also be ordered alone.

A 38 1/4 in deep daybed mattress with 12 in deep back pillows leaves about 26 in of seat, which is what turns a bed into a sofa.

Questions buyers ask next

Should daybed back cushions be L-shaped or straight?

Straight backs run along the wall only; L-shaped backs wrap the sides too. Straight suits a daybed used as a sofa with bolsters at the ends, as here. Name the choice in your order note and give the pillow's length and depth.

Why use contrast piping on a dark daybed cover?

A pale cord draws the outline. Here cream piping runs the full top seam and circles both bolster ends, tying three pieces into one set and repeating the white of the Hemnes frame.

Will a thick daybed cover stop the Hemnes drawers from opening?

Not if it is cut flush with the frame. On this daybed the cover stops at the frame's edge, so the drawers below slide freely. Give the mattress size and mention the drawers in your order note.
