A cream Hemnes daybed set, outlined in navy, in a small light bedroom

Hana reads a white daybed in morning light. One thin navy line, and a narrow bed becomes a sofa.

The quick answer

A cream linen-look Hemnes daybed cover with navy piping makes a narrow guest bed read as a sofa: the piping outlines the mattress, two back cushions fill the width of the frame, and a bolster at each arm stops pillows sliding. Measure the mattress, or both stacked mattresses, for length, width and full depth before ordering.

Pinned by Hana: five lines on a white frame

Five pins, from the navy line on the mattress to the oak table that keeps cream and white apart.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

One line of navy does the structural work

A daybed is a bed that has to behave like a sofa for most of the day. In a small bedroom, that is the whole job.

Here the frame is a white IKEA Hemnes. The wall is pale greige. The curtains are taupe linen. Cream fabric on a white frame would simply disappear. So the navy piping does the structural work. It traces the mattress edge like a pen line, then the bolster ends, and the eye reads one clear outline instead of a pale blur.

The set follows the classic recipe. A fitted mattress cover. Two cream back cushions the width of the frame. A bolster at each arm, so the pillows stop sliding. With a back and two arms, the bed gains a seat depth, and a seat depth is what makes it a sofa. Height is a feeling. So is depth.

The props are few. A linen-shade lamp echoes the fabric and keeps the corner soft. An oak side table with books adds one warm wood, which stops cream and white from blurring together. A beige low-pile rug keeps the floor quiet. The rest of the room stays empty, and empty floor is what makes a small room feel generous.

To copy it, choose a pale body cloth from the linen-look fabrics and take the piping color from something already in the room: navy bedding, a rug border. More sets are in Hemnes daybed covers and bedroom cushions.

A white frame. A cream cover. One navy line that shows where to sit.

A real project

Straight back pillows, not L-shaped

A buyer in the US had two IKEA mattresses stacked on her daybed, 74 3/8 x 38 1/4 x 9 1/2 in (189 x 97 x 24 cm) together. She wanted a brick corduroy cover and back pillows along the back only.

The standard set has L-shaped backrests that wrap around the sides. So a straight-only option was made for her. The first shipment arrived wrong: indigo, with L-shaped pillows. The shop remade it in brick, with straight 36 x 12 in (91 x 30 cm) back pillows and new fillings. She loved the result.

The lesson is small and exact. Confirm in writing whether the backrests are L-shaped or straight. For straight, give the length and depth of each pillow.

Ordering a Hemnes set for stacked mattresses

  1. Measure the stack

Length, width and full depth of both mattresses together, not the frame. The guide to measuring Hemnes covers walks through it.

  2. Name the backrest shape

Write L-shaped or straight, in words. The standard set wraps the sides.

  3. Size straight pillows

    Give each pillow's length and depth, for example 36 x 12 in (91 x 30 cm).

  4. Choose cover or full set

Pick the option on the daybed listing and write the exact size and fabric code in the personalization note.

Buyer questions: twin sizes, summer guests, covers only

  1. A common question

Will your daybed cover set fit a standard twin mattress, or can it be made to my size?

    The workshop's answer

It is made to your exact size, for example 39 x 75 x 5 in, written in the personalization section, and a full set can be chosen on the listing. Daybed sizes vary. For two stacked 4 3/4 in (12 cm) mattresses, the cover was simply made at the measured 78 3/4 x 35 1/2 x 9 1/2 in (200 x 90 x 24 cm).

  2. A common question

Guests sleep on our daybed in hot summers. Which fabric won't feel scratchy or plush?

    The workshop's answer

The shop suggested its soft fabric, which is smooth and breathable, so it doesn't feel scratchy or hot. For a 24 x 79 in daybed cushion, the piping can match the body color or contrast with it.

  3. A common question

    How do I order only a cover for a 75 x 39 x 5 inch daybed mattress?

    The workshop's answer

Order through the daybed listing and select the cover option. Then write the exact size and the fabric code in Add Personalization.

On a white daybed frame, cream fabric disappears. Navy piping on the mattress edge and bolster ends draws the outline that turns a bed into a sofa.

Questions buyers ask next

Why use contrast piping on a cream daybed cover?

On a white frame against a pale wall, cream fabric blends into everything around it. A thin navy welt on the mattress edge and bolster ends outlines each piece, so the daybed reads as a defined sofa by day rather than a pale shape.

How many back cushions does a Hemnes daybed need to look like a sofa?

Two back cushions that together fill the width of the frame, plus a bolster at each arm. The backs give the bed a seat depth, and the bolsters stop the back cushions sliding toward the ends.

Where should the piping color come from?

From something already in the room: navy bedding, a rug border, a picture frame. A piping color that repeats elsewhere looks planned; one that appears only on the daybed looks like an accident.

What makes a daybed feel generous in a small bedroom?

Fewer, larger pieces and open floor. One lamp, one side table and a low-pile rug leave space around the bed, while pale fabric and warm oak keep the corner light without looking clinical.
