A black and white striped window seat cushion, warmed with cognac

A letter about a bold stripe on oak drawers, and the handful of pieces that make it feel like home instead of a crosswalk.

The quick answer

To mix patterns around a striped window seat cushion, pair one stripe with one solid that repeats its dark band, one soft texture and one warm accent such as cognac leather or terracotta. Let the stripe run front to back so it reads as a row of bars along the edge, and ask for a close-up, since some dark stripes are navy.

Dear neighbor,

One loud stripe per window seat, and friends for it

I keep a rule on my own porch: one loud thing per seat. This window seat follows it, and that is why it works.

The loud thing is the stripe, black and white on a window seat cushion laid across pale oak drawers. The stripes run front to back, so from the room they read as a row of bars along the front edge. That gives the drawers underneath a clean top line, and the cushion stops flush with the drawer fronts, so the oak and the black knobs stay in view.

Then come the friends, each a different kind of quiet. A black linen pillow repeats the stripe's dark band at full strength: a solid, so the eye can rest. A charcoal waffle-knit throw drapes over the front and softens the graphic edge with texture instead of pattern. And one cognac leather lumbar pillow brings the only warmth on the seat. Without it the whole corner would read like a newspaper.

Off the seat, the olive tree in its terracotta pot adds the only green and the second warm tone. The black floor lamp with its bare filament bulb ties back to the stripe and the knobs.

So the recipe is short: one stripe, one solid, one texture, one warm accent, and green from something alive. If you want the stripe itself, read our notes on stripe direction first. What is the loud thing in your room?

A real project

The nook that waited a day for its carpenter

A buyer planning a child's reading nook chose two fabrics that make a lively pair: a black and white weave with gray in it, and a mustard velvet. The cushion was planned at 23 5/8 x 39 3/8 in (60 x 100 cm). But the joinery was going in the next day, so the workshop held the order and waited.

The finished nook measured 25 1/4 x 39 3/8 in (64 x 100 cm), about 1 1/2 in (4 cm) deeper than planned, and production went ahead at the real size. A graphic black and white with one warm mustard is the same trick as the cognac pillow in this photograph. Kids and dogs are the real quality control, and a nook built for a child deserves the true number.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Can I have piping in a color that isn't in the cushion fabric at all?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Piping can be cut from any color in the fabric charts. Buyers have paired a mustard velvet with olive piping, a dark red with dark green, and a cream with coffee. Matching piping in the same color is available too.

  2. A common question

How do I send drawings for two custom-shaped cushions, and can they go in one order?

    The workshop's answer

Send a drawing with a measurement on every edge, ideally labeled. Two different shapes go in as separate orders for custom shapes, each with its own drawing uploaded. If you can't attach a photo in your first message, attach it once the workshop replies.

  3. A common question

Should I order the cushion a little smaller than the bench so it fits?

    The workshop's answer

No need. Give the exact size of the space: the workshop takes the sewing allowances into account, and a snug fit works well. Only write slightly smaller numbers if you want a visible gap between cushions that sit side by side.

Mix patterns on a window seat with one stripe, one solid, one texture and one warm accent. Four pieces, and only one of them gets to be loud.

Questions buyers ask next

Which way should stripes run on a window seat cushion?

Front to back by default. With a fabric roll about 55 in (140 cm) wide, stripes on a long cushion run from the front edge to the wall; a stripe running the full length needs a seam or a railroaded cloth.

Is a striped cotton cover washable?

Yes. The cover unzips and washes at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Striped cottons are for indoor use only and stain more easily than tighter weaves, so a darker stripe forgives more than a pale one.

How many patterns can one window seat carry?

One is plenty. Let the stripe be the pattern, then add a solid, a texture such as a waffle knit, and one warm material like leather or terracotta. Texture gives variety without a second pattern arguing with the first.

Why ask for a close-up of a black stripe?

Several dark stripes are really a very deep navy that passes for black in photos, and a thin stripe hides the difference on screen. A close-up taken in real light shows which one you are getting.
