Aqua diamond L-shaped bench cushions on masonry: how the cloth feels, wears and grips

White plaster, jasmine overhead, a diamond weave on every seat and back. I read this corner for the hand of the cloth first, then did the arithmetic on the backs, because on an L the second wall hides a number.

The quick answer

For an L-shaped bench cushion on masonry, choose a crisp woven outdoor fabric that holds a box edge, add a non-slip base so the seats don't creep on plaster, and let the pattern run on through the corner joint. On an L, the short wall's back line equals the short seat plus the long seat's depth.

Reading the hand from a photograph

You can't touch a photo, but you can read one. The aqua and ivory diamond here is a woven outdoor fabric, and it sits the way woven outdoor cloth sits: flat and crisp, with sharp corners at the box edge and self piping that holds a clean line instead of rolling. That crispness is the hand you want on a seat that lives outside.

The two seat lengths butt at the corner and the diamond runs on unbroken across the joint. That only happens when somebody plans the cut before the cloth reaches the table. Back cushions in the same diamond lean on the plaster and turn masonry into an outdoor sofa, and one plain cream pillow marks the corner seat and gives the pattern a rest.

The rest of the patio is warm on purpose. A travertine coffee table carries a terracotta jug, two cups and a bowl of green olives; two olive trees stand in terracotta pots; a striped jute rug lies underfoot. Aqua cools the white plaster, and all that stone and clay keeps it from going cold. Star jasmine spills from the timber pergola for shade and a soft green ceiling.

Five pins, from the joint to the jasmine

Each pin marks a decision you can copy on your own corner bench.

How it wears, and how it grips

What is your bench made of? If it is masonry, it is hard on a cushion in one quiet way: it lets the cushion creep. Each time someone sits, the seat slides a hair toward the front edge, and the piping takes the rubbing. A non-slip base underneath stops that. In the story below, anti-slip bases went under the whole set.

A small pattern is forgiving, too. A diamond keeps an olive-oil fingerprint or the dust of a dry afternoon quieter than a solid aqua would, which is one reason a patterned outdoor cloth suits a dining corner.

What a pattern cannot do is keep water out of the foam. If you are shopping for waterproof outdoor cushions, the cover is only one layer of the answer; read water-repellent vs waterproof before you choose. The cloth family is under outdoor acrylic, the shapes under L-shaped cushions, and the corner question in which piece owns the corner.

A real project

An L for a kitchen, and where the backs begin

A buyer wrote in about an L-shaped kitchen dining bench: seats of 93 1/4 × 22 1/2 in (237 × 57 cm) and 48 3/8 × 22 1/2 in (123 × 57 cm) in an outdoor fabric with white trim. They first asked for 2.5 in; the shop recommended 2 or 3 in, and they chose 3.

Then the backs, which is where people slip, partner. The short wall's back line starts behind the long seat, so it runs 48 3/8 + 22 1/2 = 70 7/8 in (123 + 57 = 180 cm), less the corner pillow. The layout came to three back pillows of 31 1/8 in (79 cm) and two of about 32 5/8 in (83 cm), all at the standard 15 3/4 in (40 cm) height. Anti-slip bases went under the set, and the buyer called the result beautiful.

The lesson: On an L, the second wall's back line includes the first seat's depth.

Grip, thickness and the right order page

  1. A common question

Can my bench cushion have a non-slip base? I'm worried it will slide all over the place.

    The workshop's answer

Yes. A good non-slip base can be added for a small extra charge that depends on the cushion's size. Order as normal, write the non-slip base and the exact size in the personalization box, and the workshop sends a link for the difference.

  2. A common question

I ordered my custom shape on the wrong product page and couldn't upload my sketch. What now?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop cancels that order with a full refund and sends the custom-shape order page, whose checkout asks for your drawing. Ordering a custom shape on the rectangle or cover page skips that upload step, and that is where production mistakes start.

  3. A common question

Can you make a thicker cushion, like 6, 7.5 or 8 inches?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Thicker upholstered cushions such as 7.5 or 8 in can be made, with an extra charge for the added thickness; send the length and width for a quote. One buyer who ordered 4 in and then needed 6 in paid a small upgrade through a balance link.

A seat cushion on a stone or masonry bench creeps forward each time someone sits; a non-slip base underneath is what stops it.

Questions buyers ask next

Which piece should run through the corner of an L-shaped bench?

Decide it on the drawing, before any cutting. Here the two seat lengths butt at the corner and the diamond runs on across the joint. Draw the L with both arm lengths and the seat depth, and mark which cushion owns the corner.

What does fabric hand mean for an outdoor cushion?

Hand is how a cloth feels and behaves: dry or soft, crisp or drapey, smooth or textured. On an outdoor seat it tells you how the cushion will feel on bare legs and how well the box edge will hold its corners.

Can back cushions lean straight against a plaster wall?

Yes. Back cushions at the standard 15 3/4 in (40 cm) height lean on the wall and turn a masonry bench into an outdoor sofa. Divide each back run into pillows of similar width, as one past order did with 31 1/8 and 32 5/8 in pieces.
