Custom cushions for Prince Edward Island farmhouses, cottages and verandas

On Prince Edward Island the dirt is red, and by mid-July it has found the good cushion on the veranda swing. Pick a color that forgives it, and everybody gets to sit down.

The quick answer

Custom cushions in PEI should forgive red dust, sea wind and a busy July and August. Choose rust, oatmeal, olive or terracotta in water-repellent outdoor fabric for verandas, keep a spare set of zip-off covers for rental cottages, and bring cushions in before the first frost, which averages October 17 in Charlottetown. Winters bring about 114 in (290 cm) of snow.

Red soil, sea wind, and a short, bright summer

Prince Edward Island is famous for its iron-rich red soil, over bedrock that is mostly red sandstone and siltstone, and the island grows about a quarter of Canada's potatoes. Plowed fields, dirt lanes and beach sand all travel. On a veranda, fine red dust shows first on white, pale gray and very dark solids.

The summer is short and kind. Charlottetown's July high averages about 74°F (23°C), with about one day a year above 86°F (30°C), by Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1981 to 2010 normals. Mornings are damp: August averages about 89% relative humidity at 6 a.m. The frost-free season runs about 153 days, from around May 16 to October 17.

Winter is the long season: about 114 in (290 cm) of snow, 18 days of freezing rain or drizzle and 17 days of blowing snow. Nothing on the porch stays out for that, neighbor.

Farmhouse verandas, Charlottetown Victorians, and the Cavendish crowd

Green Gables, the 19th-century farmhouse behind the famous novel, is a one-and-a-half-story L-shaped house in white-painted shingles, with green gables and shutters. On a farmhouse like that, the veranda is the family's summer living room. In Charlottetown, the downtown core keeps many Victorian-era houses, and window seats to go with them.

Then July arrives. Cavendish is the island's largest seasonal resort area, with an average daily population of about 7,500 in July and August. Rental cottages there see a new family most weeks, and every family has a wet swimsuit.

For custom cushions in PEI on a veranda swing, measure inside the arms, not the swing's nominal length; the porch swing sizes guide has the numbers. Tie the back cushion to a slat. The swing in our photo wears burnt orange velvet under a deep roof; on an open veranda I'd order that same warm shade in outdoor fabric. For porch swing cushions and rocking chair cushions, rust, terracotta and oatmeal forgive red dust best.

A real project

A swing bed the size of a small raft

A buyer in Canada needed a one-piece cushion 51 x 82 in (130 x 208 cm), with a backrest, for a wooden outdoor swing platform, and asked whether it would be thick enough. The workshop said its standard is 4 in (10 cm), offered 6 or 8 in (15 or 20 cm), and quoted each. The buyer went with a local option in the end, and the workshop explained plainly that oversized pieces cost more.

Here's my porch view. Thickness is about who naps there. A deep swing bed is heaven in July and a load to haul in come October, so size it for the two people who'll carry it.

Rental cottages: two sets of covers and a clothesline

If you rent out a cottage, order a spare set of covers the same day you order the cushions. Covers zip off and wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle; air dry them, and keep any non-slip base out of the machine. One set on the veranda, one on the line, and nobody waits for a cushion to dry between guests.

Kids and dogs are the real quality control. Indoors, pick a durable performance fabric; on the veranda, water-repellent outdoor fabric, in a mid-tone either way. A terracotta kilim stripe, like the screened-porch bench in the gallery, hides a whole summer of red sand. The washing guide covers the care. Across the strait, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia have their own porch stories, and custom cushions in Canada has the rest.

The July-to-October porch plan

  • Mid-May, after the last frost (around May 16 in Charlottetown): wash covers and carry the cushions out.
  • July and August: shake off red dust every few days; brush it dry before any washing.
  • Between rental guests: swap in the spare cover set and wash the used one.
  • Damp mornings: stand cushions on edge in the sun before the first coffee.
  • Early October: pick a dry day, wash the covers, and dry the foam to the core.
  • Before October 17, the average first frost: store everything indoors, off concrete, in breathable bags.

On an island porch, the right cushion color isn't the prettiest one on the chart. It's the one that still looks clean on the last day of August.

Buyer questions: covers, colors and matching sets

  1. A common question

Are the covers removable, and can they go in the washing machine?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Every cover has a zipper and comes off completely, and all the fabrics, velvet and linen included, wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Air dry them instead of tumble drying, and iron on low if needed.

  2. A common question

Can I buy just a replacement cover for a cushion I already have?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Covers are made without foam to your size: pick the nearest size and write the exact length, width, thickness and fabric code in the personalization box. They're made for banquettes, window seats, deck boxes and more.

  3. A common question

Can you make matching chair cushions with ties in the same fabric as my bench?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, in exactly the same fabric so everything coordinates. Send the sizes and mention them together when you order so they're kept as one set.

  4. A common question

Is this color mustard or yellow, and is that one burnt orange or tobacco?

    The workshop's answer

In the velvet range, 12 is mustard, 18 is yellow and 14 is amber or burnt orange. Tobacco and orange are different shades, and the workshop sends photos of both on real cushions. If in doubt, write 'mustard' in the note and it will be matched.

  5. A common question

Which pet-friendly colors work with an oatmeal and charcoal scheme?

    The workshop's answer

G-47 is the oatmeal, a warm cream, and G-48 is one shade deeper. G-61 is a true deep charcoal, while G-62 is darker, almost black. G-47 with G-61 is the recommended oatmeal-and-charcoal pair.

Prince Edward Island cushion questions

What cushion color hides PEI's red dust?

Warm mid-tones: rust, burnt orange, terracotta, oatmeal or olive, or a stripe that mixes them. Red dust shows most on white, pale gray and very dark solids. Brush it off dry before washing.

Can veranda cushions stay out overnight in July?

Under a deep roof, usually, but Charlottetown's August mornings average about 89% relative humidity, so cushions can feel damp at breakfast. Stand them on edge in the morning sun and bring them in before rain or strong wind.

When should cottage cushions be stored for winter?

Before the first frost, which averages October 17 in Charlottetown (1981 to 2010 normals). Wash the covers, dry the foam to the core, and store everything indoors, off concrete, in breathable covers.

How thick should a veranda swing cushion be?

For everyday sitting, 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm). A swing bed meant for napping can go to 6 or 8 in (15 or 20 cm), but it weighs more to carry in and costs more to make.
