The teddy sofa, read piece by piece: a low floor couch you can rearrange

People search for a teddy sofa and expect a fuzzy cloth. What arrives is a shape: two foam seats, two L-shaped backs, a few metal bars, all resting on the floor. Here is each piece, measured.

A low, frameless floor sofa in cream velvet with dusty rose ends. Velvet is a by-request cover for this kind of sofa; ribbed corduroy is the standard.

The quick answer

A teddy sofa is a low, frameless modular floor couch: two stacked 79 x 39 in foam seat mattresses, two L-shaped backrests and metal bars, with a seat about 13 to 14 in off the floor. 'Teddy' names the plump look, not the cloth. The standard cover is ribbed corduroy that unzips and washes at 86°F (30°C).

Shapes to choose from

Every one is cut to your measurements. The number is how many readings the atelier has published for that shape.

Teddy names the shape, not the cloth

Most people who ask for a teddy sofa expect a fuzzy fabric. What they usually mean is a shape.

The mix-up comes up again and again. A buyer orders the teddy sofa, then asks whether it will feel like a teddy bear. The standard one will not. Its cover is ribbed corduroy. 'Teddy' describes the plump, low silhouette. The curly teddy cloth is a separate chart on the bouclé and teddy shelf, and you can ask for it by name.

The build is quiet. No frame, no legs. Two dense foam seat mattresses lie on the floor, one on the other. L-shaped backrests wrap the back and both ends. Metal support bars stand behind them so they stay upright. An ottoman is optional.

Published guides call a couch like this boneless: foam gives it its shape, not an inner wooden frame. It is a style, not a model name. The question of originals and copies is answered on its own page: is this teddy floor sofa an original or a copy?

One straight run, an open L, or a closed corner

A single teddy sofa is one straight run. Everything larger is the same sofa with more pieces.

  • Straight: two seats, two L-shaped backrests, four bars.
  • Open L: extra pieces turn the straight sofa into an L with one end left open.
  • Closed corner: about 79 x 118 in (200 x 300 cm). An L-shaped backrest wraps the far end, so the corner reads as a nook.
  • Open corner: two L-shaped and two straight backrests. The last end stays open, like a chaise. A spare straight backrest lets you switch later.

Modular floor sofa layouts draws each arrangement.

The ottoman is 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm) and comes filled. Order it with the sofa, alone, or with a straight or L-shaped backrest and a bar. Buyers often add one months later, and it is made to match. One buyer in the US ordered only an ottoman, a straight backrest and a bar in brick corduroy, so her corner could seat three with a back for each.

The sofa travels in pieces. It fits through a normal door.

Corduroy is the standard cover; teddy cloth is a request

The standard cover is ribbed corduroy in about ten shades. Brick, mustard and a dark chocolate brown are among them.

Velvet and linen-look covers are made by request. The photographs on this page show velvet floor sofas, cream with dusty rose ends and cream with mustard: the same low, frameless idea in a smoother cloth. None of them is corduroy, and none is teddy. If you want the fluffy surface the name suggests, ask for the teddy chart. It has its own colors.

Matching something you already own is a sample question. A rust corduroy sits closest to the brick. Order a swatch before a cover set. Fabric is also sold by the meter, most of it on rolls about 55 in (140 cm) wide, and buyers use it to recover an ottoman or sew a matching panel.

Two 6.5 in layers, a low seat, and a few days to rise

Each seat mattress is dense foam, 6.5 in (17 cm) thick, and that thickness stays fixed. Stacked, the two layers put you about 13 to 14 in off the floor. Knees rise. People sit cross-legged, or lean back and stay.

To sit higher, add a thinner layer rather than a third full one. One buyer in the US wanted her mustard corduroy teddy sofa at about 18 to 19 in, like a standard couch. A third full layer would have reached about 21 in, so the workshop made an extra 5 in layer instead. Raising a floor sofa's seat and the seat height calculator walk through the numbers.

Everything arrives vacuum-packed and rolled, looking flat, creased and small. That is expected. Unwrap each piece. Most fill out in 24 to 36 hours and reach their photographed shape in about 36 to 48. Full firmness takes three to five days, sometimes a week, and you can sit on the sofa while it rises. The first 72 hours has the rest.

A real project

A 68 in teddy sofa for a small apartment

A buyer in the US was moving across a city with limited van space. She ordered a teddy sofa shortened to 68 x 39 in (173 x 99 cm) and asked the workshop to hold it until she had moved in. It waited.

When it arrived, the frame joints would not seat, not even with a mallet. She measured and believed the L-shaped connectors ran about 1/2 in too long for the shorter sofa. The workshop sent a new set of hardware. It fit.

A custom length changes more than the foam. The bars have to match it. Dry-fit the frame the day it arrives, while every piece is still easy to photograph.

What it taught
Custom-length sofas need matching frame bars; test-fit the frame on delivery day.

Seven ways a teddy sofa disappoints, and the fix

  • Reading 'teddy' as the fabric. The standard cover is corduroy; the curly teddy cloth is a separate chart you ask for.
  • Asking for a quote before measuring the wall. Width changes the quote and the making time; one buyer asked for 98 in, measured again and needed 89 in.
  • Judging the shape on the first evening. Compressed foam needs 36 to 48 hours to look like the photographs.
  • Leaving bars in the box. Without every bar in place, the backrests lean and drift.
  • Setting bare metal on hardwood. Put felt pads or fabric under the bars and a rug or grip mat under the seats.
  • Forcing a zipper over a freshly washed cover. Unzip fully before pulling a cover off, and refit it while slightly damp.
  • Buying covers for another maker's sofa without measuring. They fit seats of 78 to 79 x 39 x 6.5 in and L-backrests of 39 x 39 x 15 in, and little else.

'Teddy' names the look, not the cloth. The standard teddy sofa wears ribbed corduroy; the fluffy teddy fabric is a separate chart.

Buyer questions: teddy sofa questions

  1. A common question

I opened the rolls and the sofa looks thin and creased. When will it look like the photos?

    The workshop's answer

Soon. The seats and backrests are vacuum-compressed and roll-packed, so they come out flat, folded and smaller than in the photos. That is expected, not a wrong product. Unwrap every piece. Most fill out in 24 to 36 hours and reach the photographed shape in about 36 to 48, with full firmness after 3 to 5 days, occasionally a week. Shaking the cushions by hand helps, and you can sit on the sofa meanwhile. If a piece is still flat after another 4 to 5 days, the workshop sends a replacement insert.

  2. A common question

Will your replacement covers fit a teddy floor sofa I bought from another maker?

    The workshop's answer

Usually, if the sizes match. The covers are made for seats of about 79 x 39 x 6.5 in (200 x 100 x 17 cm) and L-shaped backrests of 39 x 39 x 15 in (100 x 100 x 39 cm). Measure every piece, the height especially, before ordering. A base of that size fits closely, but a foam-filled backrest from another maker may sit slightly loose. To match an existing color such as a rust corduroy, order a fabric sample first; the brick is the closest tone.

  3. A common question

Are the metal bars included, and how many does each layout need?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. They come with the sofa, and they are needed to hold the backrests and armrests; photos of bed setups simply leave them out. A single teddy sofa has 4 bars, a three-seater uses 5 pieces (one per side, two for the back), the L with ottoman includes 6, and a full corner needs 8 large and 8 small, so any extras become spares. A plain ottoman needs none. Bars may ship in a separate parcel with set-up instructions. If a piece is missing, send photos; in past cases missing parts were reshipped.

  4. A common question

Open corner or closed corner: what actually changes on the floor sofa?

    The workshop's answer

Only the last backrest. A closed corner ends with an L-shaped backrest that wraps the end; an open corner ends with a straight one, leaving that end open like a chaise. In pieces, the closed corner is 3 L-shaped backrests plus 1 straight, the open corner 2 of each. The closed corner measures about 79 x 118 in (200 x 300 cm). Choose the open option or write it in the order note, and add a spare straight backrest if you want to switch later.

  5. A common question

I bought the sofa last year. Can I add only the ottoman now, in the same color?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm) ottoman is sold on its own with its filling, or with a straight or L-shaped backrest and a metal bar. Ask for it in your sofa's color, brick for example, and it is made to match. Buyers add ottomans months or a year after the sofa. On the corner sofa it is the detachable leg section; it lies fully flat, and a second one can be added.

Before the sofa rolls arrive

Do the pieces of a teddy sofa fasten to each other?

No. There is no Velcro between the seats and backrests. A non-slip fabric under the seat bases and the ottoman keeps them from sliding, and the metal bars hold the layout. On hardwood, lay a rug or grip mat underneath and fit felt pads under the bars so they don't scratch.

How do the teddy sofa's metal bars go together?

Twist and push each joint until the small spring dots click into the holes. A stiff joint loosens if you click it in and out of the corner piece a few times. The U-piece with the black plastic fitting goes at the bottom, against the floor, and a short setup video replaces printed instructions.

Can teddy sofa covers go in a washing machine?

Yes. The covers unzip from the seats and backrests and machine wash at 86°F (30°C), turned inside out, with a mild detergent. Unzip fully before pulling a cover off the foam, and refit it while slightly damp so the zipper isn't strained.
