The Cutting Table · a common question
Is your linen durable enough for seat cushions, and will it wrinkle or stain?
Also asked as:Is the linen durable enough for a seat cushion? Will it wrinkle easily and stain?
Linen has the loveliest matte light of any fabric and the worst reputation on a seat. A blend is how you keep the first and lose the second.
The quick answer
Yes, the cushion linen is durable enough for seat cushions, because it's a linen-polyester blend, not pure linen. The linen gives the natural look, texture and breathability; the polyester adds strength, shape retention and easy care, so it wrinkles little and resists stains better. No coating is applied, and covers machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on delicate and line dry.

What the polyester in the weave is for
Pure linen is a beautiful fabric with a short memory for shape. On a seat it wears and wrinkles faster, and every sitting leaves a map. The blend puts polyester into the weave: the linen keeps its natural look, texture and breathability, and the polyester adds strength, holds the cushion's shape and makes washing easy.
The result is a medium-weight fabric that doesn't wrinkle easily and resists stains better than natural linen, which is why it is one of the most-used seat cushion fabrics. Compare linen-look fabrics with linen and cotton-linen, and read real linen versus linen-look.
Living with a linen-blend seat
- No coating. No stain-shield treatment is applied to any fabric, so blot spills early; stain first aid helps.
- Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a delicate cycle, then line dry. See washing cushion covers.
- Covers come off for every wash.
- Cream and beige come in the linen-look polyester for pale seats that face spills.
Linen in a nursery
For a nursery, the linen-look fabric works: it's polyester, it machine washes and it line dries. Velvet is the other good choice, my friends. Cotton is the one the workshop steers people away from there, because it copes less well with washing and everyday furniture use; the kid-friendly fabric pattern goes further.
The eye sits down first, so choose the pale shade you love and let the blend carry the wear. What color is the room in the morning, before anyone switches on a lamp?
Pure linen wears and wrinkles fast on a seat; a linen-polyester blend keeps the linen look and adds strength, shape and machine washing at 86°F.

Buyer questions
- A common question
Is your linen real linen? Will it wrinkle or stain easily, and is it coated?
The workshop's answerIt's a durable polyester blend rather than pure linen, so it's medium weight, doesn't wrinkle easily and resists stains better than natural linen. No coating is applied to any fabric, and covers machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on delicate.
- A common question
Is the linen fabric OK for a nursery? Can it be machine washed and line dried?
The workshop's answerYes. The linen-look fabric is polyester and can be machine washed and line dried. Cotton isn't recommended for a nursery; velvet is a good alternative.
- A common question
Do you have a spill- and stain-resistant polyester that looks like linen?
The workshop's answerYes, a linen-look polyester that includes cream and beige, and the color chart is sent on request. Squares of about 35.5, 37.5 or 39.5 in (90, 95 or 100 cm) can be made.
Questions buyers ask next
Why isn't pure linen the standard for seat cushions?
Pure linen is available on a separate 100% linen chart, but it wears and wrinkles much faster on seating. The blend keeps the linen look while polyester adds strength and shape.
Is the linen blend OEKO-TEX certified?
It is one of the fabrics from a mill certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (03.T.3239). No organic certification is claimed, so choose it for wear and washing rather than as an organic fabric.
Which lasts longer on a family seat, velvet or soft fabric?
Both last well; they come from the same manufacturer at the same quality. Soft fabric is slightly easier to clean, which makes it the better pick for heavy family use.
