A yellow and powder blue star pouf, and how one nursery corner changes with the seasons

A letter about a small striped star and the four kinds of light it will sit in before next spring.

The quick answer

A striped star floor cushion changes less than the light around it: high summer daylight makes yellow and powder blue look bright and pale, while winter lamps and fairy lights warm them. Judge color in daylight from real photos, not a screen, and order every cover in a set together so they share one dye batch.

High Point ·

My friend,

A letter from the nursery floor

A star pouf in a nursery lives through four kinds of light before anyone thinks to move it. I have watched cloth do this for fifty-some years, and stripes show it best.

In summer the light comes in high and white, and the sunny yellow reads close to lemon while the powder blue goes pale. Autumn light drops lower and warmer, and the two settle down. By December the room runs on lamps and the fairy-light canopy, and the whole stripe turns buttery. Come spring you see it true again.

None of that is the fabric changing. It is the room. Cotton stripe has no sheen to flash in one season and go dull in the next, which is why it suits a corner like this. If the pouf sits in strong window sun all summer, read about cushions fading in sun before July.

Which way does your nursery window face?

Where the stripe turns the corner

Look straight on and you see the tailoring. On the top, the stripes run front to back, toward you, which makes the seat look longer. On the box wall they turn into horizontal bands. Striped piping sits right on the turn and marks it. A seam is a promise, and this one keeps it all the way round the points of the star.

The room around it is mostly white. A white dresser on one side, with an orange tiger plush adding a warm pop beside the yellow. A white bookcase on the other, with books, a basket, a pencil cup and a rainbow cushion. The striped star is the only saturated block between them, so the corner is cheerful without feeling crowded.

The navy star pillow sits at the back because it is the deepest color here, and deep colors belong behind. A white cloud pillow lightens it. The plaid blanket in the crib shares the blue and ties the play corner to the sleep corner. One patterned floor piece per room, white storage around it. More star poufs, kids' room cushions and striped cotton and ticking are in the Atlas, with the stripe direction notes for anyone planning their own.

A real project

The beige that arrived looking mustard brown

A couple in the US ordered the closed-corner L floor sofa in beige corduroy, 79 x 118 in (201 x 300 cm), plus one extra straight backrest so they could switch to an open corner later. At first only four of the five parcels arrived.

When the cover sets were finally side by side, one was clearly a different shade. The beige they had ordered looked like a dark mustard brown in person. They asked for every cover to match the lighter set.

Beige tones shift between dye batches, and screens shift them again. Order all covers together, and ask for real-life photos in daylight. The notes on dye lots and on screen color versus daylight explain why.

Buyer questions: black corduroy, flaking bars and a lower offer

  1. A common question

Could the corduroy floor sofa be made all in black?

    The workshop's answer

There is no black in the corduroy range. The darkest corduroy options are dark anthracite and brown; for true black, the shop can make it in velvet or linen.

  2. A common question

The chrome bars on my floor sofa are peeling and shedding silver flakes. Can they be replaced?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. After seeing photos, the workshop ships a new metal bar set. One buyer whose poles were flaking near small children ordered new covers and was sent new bars with them.

  3. A common question

Would you take a lower offer on the teddy floor sofa?

    The workshop's answer

Large discount offers have been declined. The shop has, though, reactivated expired sales for buyers and pointed them to its own website, where the price was lower than on the marketplace listing.

Order every cover in a set at the same time: one past beige cover set looked dark mustard brown in person beside the rest.

Questions buyers ask next

Does a striped star pouf look different in winter?

The cloth doesn't change; the light does. Low, warm lamp light and fairy lights make yellow read buttery and blue softer, while high summer daylight makes both look brighter and paler.

Which way should stripes run on a star floor cushion?

On this pouf they run front to back across the top, which makes the seat look longer, then turn into horizontal bands on the box wall. Striped piping marks where the direction changes.

How many patterned pieces should a nursery have?

One patterned floor piece is plenty. Here the striped star is the only saturated block between a white dresser and a white bookcase, so the room feels bright without feeling crowded.

Sit well. — Harlan
