  1. White seat section

  2. Hinged back section

The cushion splits where the chaise folds, so the back rises without creasing.

  3. Black securing strap

Straps round the frame hold the cushion when wind gusts across the pool.

  4. Pool noodles in water

Bright toys mean a family pool; white cushions here need zipped, washable covers.

  5. Wet footprints on concrete

Swimmers sit down wet, so fast-draining foam matters more than color.

A white chaise lounge cushion in desert sun, and where the money should go

Callum reads a working pool cushion, wet footprints and all, and splits the budget into what the weather will test and what it won't.

The quick answer

On a pool chaise lounge cushion, spend on what the weather attacks: water-repellent outdoor fabric, foam that drains fast, straps or ties, and zipped covers you can wash. Save on thickness, since thinner cushions cost less and 2 in can be plenty, and on extras like contrast piping. A seat and a separate back are two pieces.

Pinned by Callum: five marks on a working pool deck

Five pins, from the hinge where the cushion splits to the wet footprints that explain every choice.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

Reading the plate: a cushion built for dripping swimmers

This isn't a styled shot, friend. It's a working pool cushion, and the wet footprints on the concrete are the most honest prop in the frame. People climb out and sit down dripping. Everything else follows from that.

The chaise lounge cushion is a plump white box that covers the teak slats completely, and it splits where the chaise folds, so the back can rise without buckling the foam. Black straps loop around the frame. In an open backyard, wind comes across the pool with nothing to stop it, and an unstrapped cushion is a pool toy waiting to happen.

White is a choice with a trade. It reflects hard midday sun and stays cooler to the touch than a dark color, but it shows every smear of sunscreen. That is why a zipped, washable cover earns its money here. The pool noodles, yellow, red and blue, tell you there are kids, and kids mean more wet sitting, more sunscreen and more laundry.

The agave, the palms and the stucco wall say strong sun and dry air most days, then the storm afternoon nobody planned for. Rain doesn't negotiate. Build for that day. For the cloth, read water-repellent vs waterproof; for the core, dry-fast foam for outdoor cushions. Measure your chaise with the back laid flat, and note how far the fold sits from the foot end; the chaise lounge size pattern shows how.

Poolside chaise cushion: where to spend and save

PartSpend or saveWhy
Outdoor fabricSpendWater-repellent cloth sheds splashes; indoor fabric soaks them up.
Foam coreSpendFast-draining foam dries between swims instead of staying damp.
Straps or tiesSpendWind across open water lifts a loose cushion straight into the pool.
Zipped coversSpendWhite shows sunscreen, and a washable cover saves the whole cushion.
ThicknessSaveThinner costs less, and 2 in can sit better on a low frame than 4 in.
Contrast pipingSaveSelf piping looks clean on white and keeps one fabric to wash and match.
A real project

Four cushions for a windy patio

A buyer in the US who lives with a lot of wind wanted a patio set that would stay put: two seat cushions 33 x 30 x 4 in (84 x 76 x 10 cm) and two back cushions 32 x 13 in (81 x 33 cm), shaped as wedges, thicker at the bottom than the top. Ties or hook-and-loop straps on all of them. They asked for a big-name outdoor acrylic by brand.

The shop quoted the set of four. I like this order because the money went where the weather goes: the wedge backs make the seat comfortable without a pile of pillows, and the tie-downs are the cheapest insurance against a gust.

If your patio sees wind, spend on fastening before you spend on thickness. The ties and non-slip pattern covers placement, and more pool pieces live in chaise and sunbed cushions and outdoor acrylic. What does your worst wind day look like?

Buyer questions: outdoor pieces, pairs and second thoughts on height

  1. A common question

Can the tufted cushion with the handle be made in outdoor fabric for use outside?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. It can be made in outdoor fabric, and the shop has quoted it at both 24 x 48 in (61 x 122 cm) and 24 x 52 in (61 x 132 cm).

  2. A common question

Does the outdoor bench cushion listing cover both the seat and the back cushion?

    The workshop's answer

No. Each purchase is one cushion. For a seat and a back, order a second cushion or two separate sizes, and the shop sends a measurement diagram for you to confirm before production starts.

  3. A common question

My outdoor cushions sit too high. Can I reorder them thinner?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Place the same order again and choose the thinner option on the product page, for example 2 in (5 cm) instead of 4 in (10 cm). One repeat order like that shipped within a couple of days.

On a pool chaise, spend on water-repellent fabric, fast-draining foam and straps first; thickness is where to save, because thinner costs less.

Questions buyers ask next

Is a white cushion a sensible choice beside a pool?

White reflects strong sun and stays cooler to the touch than dark colors, which matters on a hot deck. The catch is sunscreen marks, so pair white with zipped covers you can take off and wash.

Why is a chaise lounge cushion made in two sections?

The split sits at the chaise's hinge, so the backrest can rise without folding the foam. A one-piece cushion on an adjustable chaise creases at the bend every time the back goes up.

Do pool cushions need straps if the yard isn't windy?

Straps or ties still help. Swimmers sit down and stand up quickly, kids climb on and off, and an unfastened cushion shifts and slides on slatted frames. On an open pool deck, one gust is enough to lift it.
