A bay window cushion corner, close enough to judge the cloth

One corner photographed close tells you more about a fabric than a whole room shot. Here indigo piping turns a soft curve on oatmeal linen-look, so I took notes as if it were a test sample.

The piping turns the corner in a soft curve, and the cushion finishes flush with the edge of the paneled plinth.

The quick answer

Oatmeal linen-look on a bay window cushion is a polyester weave that copies linen's matte, slubby surface but wrinkles and shrinks less than pure linen. The zippered cover can be machine washed and line dried. Expect the color to look cooler on a scanned chart and warmer under evening lamps, so judge a swatch in daylight.

Four pins on one corner

Four pins on a corner no wider than a hand, each one a note about the cloth.

The indigo piping turns the corner without kinks.

  2. Flush front face

The cushion finishes flush with the plinth, so the seat looks built in.

  3. Paneled plinth

Painted joinery is left unstyled so the tailoring is the subject.

  4. Pine boards

What the corner says about the weave

Corners are where a fabric shows its hand. A loose weave puckers when piping turns; a firm one lets the cord curve without kinks, and that is what the indigo does here. The front face runs flush with the painted plinth instead of hanging over it, so the seat reads as built in and the tailoring becomes the subject.

The oatmeal ground is linen-look, polyester woven to copy linen's matte slub. Under soft side light it looks dry and chalky, never shiny, which suits paneled joinery. The indigo is the only saturated color in the frame, and the warm pine boards below balance its coolness.

Nothing else is styled. Wall paneling, baseboard and floorboards are left bare on purpose, so your eye stays on the seam line, which is where a cut either fits or doesn't. Measure twice; the fabric remembers.

Spills, color and the washing machine

For daily use the practical facts matter more than the romance. The cover unzips, goes in the machine on a gentle cycle at 86°F (30°C) and dries on the line. Pure linen softens beautifully, but it creases, can shrink a few percent in a warm wash, and costs more and takes longer to make. The real linen versus linen-look Pattern sets the two side by side.

Color is the other surprise. Warm neutrals like oatmeal scan cooler on a fabric chart and look warmer under indoor bulbs, so compare a swatch by a window in daylight before you commit a whole bay to it. Which light does your bay get most of the day?

A real project

Three 46-inch windows and a curved front

A parent in the US wanted a floor pillow to tuck into a child's bedroom bay, three window sections of 46 in (117 cm) each, curved on the room side. The workshop asked for a drawing with every measurement, then quoted it from the tufted linen floor cushion range, with a small reduction for a first order.

The parent's budget was lower, and the workshop held its number because of the size and the custom shape. The useful part survives the disappointment: a plain drawing with every dimension marked is the fastest way to get any custom shape priced, whether you go ahead or not.

What buyers ask about color, stains and sizes

  1. A common question

My cushion's color looks different from the fabric chart. What can you do?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop checks its production records to confirm the code, and explains that chart scans pull warm neutrals cooler while warm indoor light brings out the warmth. It offered a physical swatch, then a replacement cover in any other fabric at production cost, keeping the foam.

  2. A common question

Is the velvet stain resistant? We have small kids and a lot of spills.

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The workshop describes its velvet as stain resistant and very easy to clean.

  3. A common question

I ordered the wrong size. Can it still be changed?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, if production hasn't started. The workshop makes the correct size and refunds the difference when the new size is smaller; when it is bigger, you pay the difference through a separate extra-fee order.

Warm neutrals like oatmeal look cooler on a scanned fabric chart and warmer under lamps. Judge a linen-look swatch by a window in daylight before you order.

Questions buyers ask next

Is linen-look the same thing as linen?

No. Linen-look is usually polyester or a polyester blend woven to copy linen's slubby, matte surface. It wrinkles less, shrinks less and cleans more easily. Ask for the fiber content if natural fiber matters to you.

Should a window seat cushion sit flush or overhang the front?

Say which you want. Flush suits paneled or painted joinery and makes a seat look built in; a small overhang softens a hard edge behind the knees. Without a note, the cushion is sized to the seat itself.

Can a cushion behind window glass still fade?

Yes. Window glass does not stop all UV, so a window seat gets some every day. Fabrics are rated for lightfastness on a 1 to 8 scale, where 8 fades least, so ask for a rating if your bay gets strong sun.
