A terracotta-striped outdoor bench cushion, read from ten feet and from ten inches

Callum answers three buyer questions first, then walks back across the yard to show why a stripe cut the right way looks like one long awning.

A close look at a striped outdoor cushion corner: the stripes run over the top panel and straight down the front edge.

The quick answer

A striped outdoor bench cushion reads best when the stripes run front to back over the top and drop straight down the boxing, with piping cut from the same stripe. From ten feet (3 m) away it looks like one length of awning; up close, the lined-up stripes show careful cutting. A firm box cushion also bridges the gaps on a slatted garden bench.

Three questions before we look at the bench

  1. A common question

It's very humid where I live. Will your chenille fabrics hold up outdoors, or will they grow mold?

    The workshop's answer

Chenille isn't recommended for permanent outdoor use, especially in high humidity. Pick one of the outdoor-performance fabrics instead; they resist moisture, mildew and mold better.

  2. A common question

I need a lot of cushions. Is there a discount for a bigger order?

    The workshop's answer

Often, yes: ten outdoor covers were priced below their single-piece total, a five-cushion kitchen-bench set with non-slip backing came down as well, and four 16 x 16 in (40 x 40 cm) pillows were sold together as a discounted set. Send the whole list in one message for one quote.

  3. A common question

If I send a plan, can you quote the whole set of seat and back cushions for my garden bench?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Send a plan with every size marked and the workshop quotes the full set, with a bulk reduction on multi-piece outdoor orders. A backyard bench with seat and back cushions was reduced that way, and so was a concrete bench that needed 12 seat and back pieces, 3 in (8 cm) thick.

Now, the reading

The ten-foot view: one long awning

Stand at the back door, about ten feet (3 m) off, and this cushion reads as one thing: a strip of terracotta-and-ivory awning laid on an old gray bench. You don't see seams. You see stripes running front to back across the top and falling straight down the front without a jog.

That's the whole trick at a distance. The eye follows a stripe until something breaks it. Break it at the edge and the cushion looks like two pieces of cloth. Carry it over and it looks like one.

Color does the rest of the long-range work. Terracotta and ivory sit easy against weathered wood and white hydrangeas. Put a navy stripe on the same bench and it starts to look nautical. Fine on a dock. Beside a flower bed, the warm stripe belongs.

Which view matters more to you, friend: the one from the kitchen window, or the one from the seat?

  1. Front-to-back stripes

Stripes run across the seat and drop straight down the boxing.

  2. Striped piping

Piping cut from the same stripe so the edge doesn't break the pattern.

  3. Boxing face

The stripe on the front lines up with the stripe on top.

  4. Weathered slats

A firm box cushion bridges the slat gaps instead of sagging into them.

  5. Swatch badge

The ten-inch view: where the stripe has to line up

Now walk up and crouch. Three things show at close range that nobody sees from the door.

The piping is cut from the stripe. The welt around the top edge carries the same terracotta and ivory, so the edge doesn't draw a solid line through the pattern.

The boxing lines up. The stripe on the front face continues the stripe on the top. That's planned at the cutting table, and it's worth saying in your order note: stripe direction on the top and on the sides can be chosen. The Pattern on stripe direction shows the options.

The box edge bridges the slats. A firm box cushion spans the gaps between weathered boards instead of sinking into them. A thin, soft pad would print every slat.

The small swatch badge in the corner of the photo is there for matching: a code beats a screen every time. The cloth is a water-repellent membrane outdoor fabric. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. Know which one you bought, and read water-repellent vs waterproof cushions before the first storm. More sets live under outdoor cushions.

A real project

A lounge platform, a 5 in seat and a back with ties

A buyer wrote in about a big outdoor lounge platform. They wanted one seat cushion, 65 x 54 in (165 x 137 cm), 5 to 6 in deep in foam. Five inches (13 cm) is a standard option, so that's where the seat landed.

Then came the back: 54 x 22 in (137 x 56 cm), 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm) thick, with ties so it stays put in a breeze. Seat and back were quoted together as one set with shipping included. The covers wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Production ran 5 to 7 days, plus 3 to 5 days for delivery.

A deep lounge seat suits 5 in foam. The tied back is what turns a platform into a place to spend the afternoon.

The lesson: Deep lounge seats suit 5 in foam; a tied back cushion completes the set.

From ten feet away, a striped outdoor cushion reads as one piece only if the stripe runs over the top and straight down the front edge.

Questions buyers ask next

Which way should stripes run on a long outdoor bench cushion?

Front to back across the top, continuing down the front boxing, reads as one continuous length from a distance. Side-to-side stripes stretch the eye along the bench instead. Either can be made; state the direction in your order note.

Is terracotta a good color for a patio cushion?

Terracotta sits well against weathered gray wood, stone, clay pots and white flowers, and it reads warm rather than nautical. On a dock or a boat, navy stripes suit the setting better; in a flower garden, terracotta belongs.

Why does a thin pad sag on a slatted bench?

A thin, soft pad follows the boards, so it dips into every gap and you feel each slat. A firm box cushion spans the gaps and keeps a flat seat and a straight front edge.
