  1. Deep pinstripe seat

An extra-deep seat cushion turns a plain wooden box frame into a lounging bed.

  2. Vertical pinstripe boxing

The pinstripe runs upright on the front edge, which makes the boxing look taller.

  3. Leaning back cushion

Loose back cushions lean on the low wall, so the frame needs no backrest of its own.

  4. Tray of lemonade

A tray standing on the cushion shows how deep and firm the seat is.

  5. Lavender in terracotta

Lavender and clay add purple and rust to a mostly cream palette.

A Reading by CallumOutdoor & Water-Repellent Cushions

A cream pinstripe outdoor bench cushion, read from ten feet and from ten inches

From the far end of the roof it is one cream block against the skyline. Walk closer and a gray pinstripe appears, standing upright on the boxing. Both views count, and they ask different things of the cloth.

The quick answer

From ten feet away, an outdoor bench cushion shows only three things: its color, the thickness of its boxing and the stripe direction on the front edge. Pinstripes, piping and weave read only up close, so choose color and thickness for the far view. Outdoor cushions are made 2 to 5 in thick.

What the roof sees first

Stand ten feet back from this cushion and the pinstripe disappears.

What stays is shape. The seat is very deep and nearly as thick as the pine box frame is tall, which turns a plain platform into a lounger. Two loose back cushions lean on the low parapet, so the frame needs no backrest. Against a sunset skyline it reads as one calm cream block.

A roof is the most exposed seat on a building: full sun, wind off the edge, rain arriving sideways. Rain doesn't negotiate. So the cloth is a water-repellent outdoor weave, and the far-view decisions, color and thickness, come first. The outdoor cushion atlas starts from the same place, and the stripe direction guide covers the rest.

Five pins, from the boxing you notice across the terrace to the lavender you only find at arm's length.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

Two benches, one thin cushion, then a second order

A buyer in the US asked whether outdoor cushions only came 4 in thick. They don't: 2, 3, 4 and 5 in (5, 7.5, 10 and 12.5 cm) are all made. She picked a black outdoor fabric once the workshop confirmed every outdoor black is the same quality, added a non-slip backing and ordered 16 x 74 x 2 in (41 x 188 x 5 cm). When it arrived she ordered an identical cushion for her other bench.

That 2 in cushion is the opposite of this rooftop seat and just as right for its job. From across a patio, thin reads trim and thick reads as a bed.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Can you make zippered covers for my outdoor chair cushions that slip over the inserts I already have?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, in the workshop's own outdoor fabrics; it does not carry name-brand acrylics. Send photos and a drawing with every size marked. The old cushions stay home: measurements and photos are enough.

  2. A common question

Is this outdoor fabric bright white, or closer to a natural cream?

    The workshop's answer

The striped outdoor designs sit on a soft, natural cream ground, not bright white. Among the solids, one leans stark white and two lean beige. Batches can differ very slightly in shade.

  3. A common question

Could you show me my cushion in the fabric I picked before I commit?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The workshop makes mock-ups of your cushion in the chosen fabric, for example an outdoor stripe with blue piping, corduroy with bolsters, or a sofa cover shown in two candidate colors.

Questions buyers ask next

Does a fine pinstripe show from across a patio?

Barely. From ten feet a fine pinstripe blends into its ground, so cream and gray reads as soft cream. Up close the lines appear and keep a pale cushion from looking flat.

Can a deep cushion turn a wooden platform into a lounger?

Yes. Here the seat is very deep and nearly as thick as the box frame is tall, with two loose back cushions leaning on the wall. On a small roof or balcony, a deep cushion on a low box does a sofa's job.

Should an outdoor bench cushion be thin or thick?

It depends on the job. A 2 in cushion with a non-slip base stays put on a bench you perch on; a deep seat suits a platform you stretch out on. Thin reads trim across a patio, thick reads as a bed.
