An orange palm chair cushion with jute rope ties, set for a full patio

Evening sun, brick underfoot, a charcoal armchair and a pad that stays put when a guest drops into it. Notes for seating more people well.

The quick answer

A chair cushion with ties hosts well when it stays put and matches its neighbors. Tie it at the back corners so it cannot slide forward, keep it slim enough that the armrest still clears a forearm, and order every pad for the set at once. On one real four-pad order, making took 7 to 9 days and delivery 3 to 5.

Field notes: one chair, one evening, one length of rope

A chair pad has one job at a party: stay where it was when the next guest sits down.

This one does. It is a box-edged pad in a burnt orange and white palm print, cut to the seat of a charcoal aluminum armchair and kept slim. The sitter stays low enough that a forearm still clears the armrest. On an armchair, that is the whole proportion.

The ties are jute rope, not fabric. Thick natural cord is knotted in bows, and a second cord at the rear corner stops the pad sliding forward. The rope reads as handmade, and it links the cushion to the hedge and the brick around it.

The piping is one solid orange, pulled from the print. Against dark metal and a mesh back, that gives a single clean outline. Low golden light warms the orange further, and the weathered brick underfoot repeats the terracotta in the leaves. Nothing here is a new color.

The cloth is outdoor acrylic, which is what a patio chair needs. Bring them in before the first frost and they'll forgive you everything.

How many chairs do you pull out when the whole family comes over? Count them, friend, then measure each one. The chair cushion builder lays out a seat before you order, and more pads live in dining chair cushions and patio and porch cushions.

Pinned by Callum: five notes on the patio chair

Five pins, from the palm-leaf seat pad to the brick paving under the chair.

  1. Palm-leaf seat pad

The pad fills the seat between the arms and stays low enough that the armrest still clears a forearm.

  2. Orange piping

A solid orange welt matches the print color and keeps the edge crisp against dark metal.

  3. Jute rope bow

Thick jute cord replaces fabric ties and turns the fastening into a visible handmade detail.

  4. Rear rope tie

A second cord at the back corner stops the pad sliding forward when someone sits down.

  5. Brick paving

Warm brick underfoot repeats the terracotta tone in the print.

Hosting checklist for a patio full of chair pads

  • Count every chair you will pull out, the folding ones from the garage too, and measure each seat.
  • Tie at the back corners. That is where a pad slides from when someone sits.
  • On armchairs, keep the pad slim so a forearm still clears the rest.
  • Order the whole set at once. Pads added later can arrive a shade off.
  • Mixed chairs with tapered seats? Send a drawing with the front, back, both sides and the depth.
  • Plan the calendar. One four-pad order took 7 to 9 days to make and 3 to 5 days to deliver.

A real project

The ottoman that came in a shade too warm

A buyer in the US loved her brown velvet teddy sofa enough to come back later for the matching ottoman, 39 x 39 in (99 x 99 cm). It arrived a warm brown. The sofa was a cooler brown with a green undertone.

Two replacement covers did not match either. One parcel was lost after it was left over a fence, because tracking had not been shared ahead of time. In the end the workshop refunded the cover cost, and said a full refund would have needed the foam sent back.

Nobody enjoyed that one. The lesson carries straight to a patio: pieces ordered later can differ in shade. If you add chairs for guests next summer, send a swatch or a photo of the original pads to be matched. Read matching dye lots later before you reorder, and where to put chair ties before you cut the cords.

Buyer questions: tapered seats, a low chair and a set of four

  1. A common question

My covered outdoor chair has a tapered seat, 24 in at the back and 27 in at the front. Can you make a seat and a back cushion for it?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Send a drawing with the back edge, front edge, depth and both side edges written on it, plus the back cushion size and the thickness you want. For the back cushion height, take the distance from the seat to the top and subtract the seat thickness: 19 in minus a 3 in seat gives 16 in (41 cm).

  2. A common question

My 1970s office chair sits too low for my desk. Can you make a cushion to raise it?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, for example at 17 x 18 in (43 x 46 cm), ordered through either the bench listing or the chair cushion listing. Pick the closest size option and write your exact size and thickness in Add Personalization.

  3. A common question

I need four seat cushions in black or charcoal gray, three at 26 x 30 in and one at 30 x 30 in. Can you quote the set, and when would it ship?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The four were quoted together as one set, in black or charcoal. Processing took 7 to 9 days, then 3 to 5 days for delivery.

If you add a chair pad to a set later, send a photo or swatch of the originals. A new batch can come out a shade warmer than the pads it joins.

Questions buyers ask next

Where should the ties go on a patio chair pad?

At the back corners, around the rear legs or back posts. That is where a pad starts to slide from when someone sits down. On this palm-leaf pad a second cord at the rear corner holds it square.

Can rope stand in for fabric ties on a chair cushion?

On this pad, natural jute cord takes the place of fabric ties and is knotted in bows. It adds texture and links the cushion to the brick and hedge around it, which suits a rustic patio more than matching fabric ties.

How thick should a pad be on a patio armchair?

Slim enough that the sitter does not rise above the arms. The palm-leaf pad softens the aluminum seat but leaves the armrest at forearm height. Measure from the seat to the top of the arm before you pick a thickness.

Why is the piping solid orange instead of white?

A solid burnt orange welt pulled from the print gives one clean outline against charcoal metal. White piping would repeat the print's white at the edge and soften the line against the dark frame.
