Olive cushions on a honey wicker sofa bring the garden's green onto a white-clapboard front porch.

Olive outdoor cushions on a wicker porch sofa, read in three kinds of light

Late-morning shade on a white clapboard porch, and olive cushions on honey wicker. The color you see here is not the one you'd see at dusk, friend, and neither is the one on your phone.

The quick answer

Choose outdoor cushion color in the light where the cushions will live: a swatch on a porch in late-morning shade looks different from the same color in evening sun or on a screen. Olive works on honey wicker because it is darker than the wicker and repeats the garden's green, so the cushions look substantial and nothing clashes.

Olive in late-morning shade

Porch light is its own weather, for a wicker sofa or a plain outdoor bench cushion alike. Under a roof at eleven in the morning, color goes quiet and a little cool. That's the light this photograph was taken in, and olive handles it well.

Here's why. Olive is darker than the honey wicker, so the outdoor cushions look substantial, not washed out. And it's borrowed straight from the garden: the Boston fern overhead and the hydrangea leaves repeat it at a lighter pitch. Nothing on this porch is fighting.

No pillows. The classic three-over-three layout, three seats and three piped backs, is left plain, so the sofa reads tailored and the backs hold themselves upright.

Watch the ends. The outer seat cushions follow the rolled wicker arms instead of stopping square, so no triangle gap opens at the corner. Off-the-shelf sets get that detail wrong most often; the wicker replacement cushion guide covers it.

The props do small jobs. Black iron and a glass of lemonade give the olive a crisp edge. The jute rug and terracotta pot keep it warm.

Three lights to check a swatch in

What hour do you actually sit out there? Start with that light.

  1. Your porch, at the hour you sit there. Roof shade cools a color. Hold the sample where the sofa lives.
  2. Evening sun. Low light warms everything it touches. Look again then.
  3. Your screen, last. A phone sets its own brightness and color. Use it for the shortlist, never the decision; the screen versus daylight guide explains why.
A real project

Four seats, four backs, one final table

A buyer in the US ordered a full outdoor set: four seats with non-slip bases and four backrests without. Seats ran about 41.2 x 38 x 5 in (105 x 97 x 13 cm); backrests about 41.2 x 9 x 5 in (105 x 23 x 13 cm).

The workshop didn't guess. It asked which pieces were backrests, and whether the backs should be soft pillow-style or foam like the seats. All foam, the buyer said. Then the buyer re-measured and sent one final specification table, piece by piece, and that table became the production reference.

Eight cushions in the same white outdoor fabric look alike on a cutting table. The size table is what keeps a seat from ending up a back.

Sizes
Seats about 41.2 x 38 x 5 in; backs about 41.2 x 9 x 5 in

The lesson: For a multi-piece set, send one final table of every piece; it prevents mix-ups between seats and backs.

Buyer questions: roofs, grip and a fair price

  1. A common question

Can your cushions go outside on a covered balcony or porch?

    The workshop's answer

Under a closed roof, the regular fabrics are fine. For open-air spots the cushions are made in outdoor fabric, and any piece, seats, backrests or bolsters, can be made in it, including for screened porches.

  2. A common question

Could you use Velcro instead of ties to keep the cushions on the frame?

    The workshop's answer

Hook-and-loop tape isn't offered at the moment. Ties can go wherever you want them, and a non-slip bottom is another way to stop cushions from moving.

  3. A common question

Do you ever offer a discount?

    The workshop's answer

Sales are the workshop's to set, and while one runs the listed prices are already reduced. Bulk and multi-piece orders have been given a set price, and a quote has sometimes been adjusted once for a tight budget, so send the whole list and your budget together.

On a curved-arm wicker sofa, trace the end seat cushions on paper; width and depth alone leave a triangle gap at the arm.

Questions buyers ask next

Why does a cushion color look different on my phone than on the porch?

Screens set their own brightness and color, and porch shade cools what open sun would warm. Judge a sample outside, in the spot and at the hour you actually use the seat.

Should porch back cushions be foam or pillow-style?

Either can be made, and the workshop will ask. The buyer with the four-piece set chose foam for every back, like the seats; piped foam backs hold their shape upright without extra pillows, as on this wicker sofa.

Do outdoor seat cushions on wicker need a non-slip base?

It helps keep them put. In one past porch set, the four seats had non-slip bases and the backs did not. Ties are the other option, placed where you ask.
