Ivory patio cushions on a dark wicker sectional, read for proportion

A set of eight cushions came down to one table of numbers. Before I read the photograph, here is the order that taught the lesson.

The quick answer

Outdoor cushions for a wicker patio sectional should be measured bay by bay, because corner and armless modules often differ slightly. Send one final table listing every seat and backrest with length, depth and thickness. In one real US set, 5 in (13 cm) foam seats measured 41.2 x 38 in (105 x 96.5 cm), and the foam backrests 41.2 x 9 in (105 x 23 cm).

Buyer questions first: chaise sizes, back-corner ties, hidden zippers

  1. A common question

Can you make custom cushions for a double chaise lounge, both the back and the seat?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Both pieces are cut to your sizes, for example a back of 51 1/2 x 35 in (131 x 89 cm) and a seat of 51 1/2 x 49 in (131 x 124 cm). They're made in the workshop's own weather-resistant outdoor fabrics rather than a name-brand acrylic, and ordered through the outdoor listing with its fabric charts.

  2. A common question

Could you sew ties on the back corners so the cushion stays tied to the frame?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, at no extra charge. Ties go on the back of chair cushions or on the two back corners of a bench cushion. Write the request, with your exact size, in the Add Personalization box. Ties can match the piping or contrast with it.

  3. A common question

What kind of zippers and stitching do you use on outdoor covers?

    The workshop's answer

Durable hidden zippers, tucked away as far as possible for a clean look, and double-stitched seams. Outdoor builds can have a concealed heavy-duty zipper and UV-resistant thread. The workshop doesn't name a zipper brand.

A real project

Eight cushions and one final table

A buyer in the US ordered a full outdoor set: four seat cushions with non-slip bases and four backrests without them. Before cutting, the shop asked two questions. Which pieces are the backrests? And should the backs be pillow-style, or foam like the seats?

The buyer wanted all foam. Then they re-measured and sent one final table listing every piece. Seats: 41.2 x 38 x 5 in (105 x 96.5 x 13 cm). Backrests: 41.2 x 9 x 5 in (105 x 23 x 13 cm). That table became the production reference, and nobody had to guess which number belonged to which cushion.

Eight pieces is where mix-ups live, friend. Seats and backs share a length, and one lost column turns a seat into a back. One table, sent once, is the fix.

Five inches on a thirty-eight-inch bay

Now the photograph. The ivory box seats fill each wicker bay edge to edge. That is the whole trick of a mixed-module sectional: when every bay is full, the joins between modules read as lines, not gaps, and separate pieces become one sofa.

Hold the order's numbers up against that picture. A 5 in (13 cm) seat in a 38 in (96.5 cm) deep bay is a low, wide slab. Thick enough to sit on through a long evening, thin enough that the backrest still meets your shoulders. The backrests in that set stood 9 in (23 cm) tall and 5 in thick. Foam on both, so seat and back hold the same square edge.

Here is the proportion rule I work by. A thick back eats seat depth. Every inch of backrest thickness comes off the front of the seat you actually use. On a deep bay like this one, 5 in is comfortable. On a shallow chair, the same back would push you to the edge. Run your own numbers through the cushion thickness and seat height guide before you pick a thickness.

Color does work too. Ivory lifts dark gray-brown resin wicker; a cushion close to the weave color would vanish at dusk. All the pattern lives on the pillows: a navy ticking stripe, a coral solid, a navy solid and two prints. The seats stay plain, so one module can be replaced without a match hunt. The weathered teak table bridges cool wicker and warm flagstone, and the pillar candle in its hurricane glass says the evening isn't over.

Rain doesn't negotiate, so the fabric is outdoor acrylic. More sets like this live with our outdoor cushions. How deep are your own seat bays?

Questions buyers ask next

How thick should outdoor seat cushions be on a deep sectional?

Match thickness to depth. In one real US set, 5 in (13 cm) foam seats sat in bays 38 in (96.5 cm) deep, so a 5 in backrest still left plenty of seat. On a shallower frame, a thinner seat and back keep you from perching on the edge.

Should outdoor backrests be foam or pillow-style?

Either can be made, and the workshop asks which you want. Foam backrests keep a square edge that lines up with the seats; pillow-style backs are softer and slouchier. The buyer with the eight-piece set chose foam for every piece.

Do outdoor backrest cushions need a non-slip base?

Not always. In the eight-piece set, the four seats had non-slip bases and the four backrests did not. Seats take the sliding and shifting of people sitting down; backs lean against the frame.
