A Reading by CallumOutdoor & Water-Repellent Cushions
Charcoal rooftop sofa cushions, read at dusk
Sunset over the city, a glass rail, a wicker sofa in charcoal. Pretty. I am looking at the soot, the wind, and how long you will sit there after the sun goes down.
SaveThe quick answer
For outdoor cushions you sit on for hours, choose a dark, outdoor-rated solid such as charcoal, which hides city grime and rain spotting far better than white. Keep the back cushions loose so they can be flipped, re-angled, or carried in before a storm. The outdoor fabrics are all UV-resistant, with close to 200 options at one quality.
Buyer questions
- A common questionoutdoor-waterproof
Are your outdoor fabrics really safe outside? And why are there several outdoor charts?
The workshop's answerThere are close to 200 outdoor fabric options, all UV-resistant and suitable for outdoor use, spread across 4 to 5 charts. They are made in the same factory to the same quality; only the texture, color tone and pattern differ. The extra charts mean more choice, not different grades, which is why several of the blacks are identical in quality.
- A common questionfabric-choice
Between your two outdoor fabric families, which one is better?
The workshop's answerNeither. Both come from the same mill at the same quality, with very similar properties; only the pattern and the weave texture differ. For a white cushion with black piping, each family has a matching white and black pair.
- A common questionsizing-custom
Can you replace the cushion in my Airstream trailer? It's 6 feet by 31 inches and needs to be at least 3 inches thick.
The workshop's answerYes. It can be made to those measurements, 72 x 31 in (183 x 79 cm) at 3 in or thicker, and the workshop sends a link to order it.
Now, the reading
What the rooftop is telling me
Up on a roof there is nothing between your cushions and the weather. Soot off the street, dust on the wind, water pooling on concrete after a storm. That is why these outdoor cushions are a mid charcoal and not the ivory you might pick at ground level. A dark solid hides roof grime and rain spotting. Rain doesn't negotiate.
The seat cushions are thick and squared off, echoing the hard lines of the concrete planters and the glass balustrade. The back cushions are loose. For long sitting that is the whole game: flip them when one side fades, pull one behind you for a proper lean, carry the lot inside when a storm is forecast.
Softness comes from texture only. A gray herringbone knit pillow keeps an all-gray scheme from going flat. One ivory lumbar with a black stripe catches the sunset and pulls your eye along the sofa. Glass votives and a ceramic bowl on a honey teak table warm the cool charcoal after dark, festoon lights and a metal lantern do the rest, and a matching cushioned ottoman lets you put your feet up for the second hour. The grasses and lavender in the planters bend with the wind. That is your weather vane.
Copy it this way, friend: big surfaces dark and practical, two small pillows doing the decorating. Start with outdoor acrylic fabrics, read water-repellent vs waterproof before you trust any label, and see more setups among the outdoor cushions.

A dark solid hides roof grime and rain spotting far better than white.
- Loose back cushion
Separate back cushions can be flipped, or carried in when a storm is forecast.
- Herringbone knit pillow
Texture rather than color keeps an all-gray scheme from going flat.
- Ivory striped lumbar
One light lumbar catches the sunset and pulls the eye along the sofa.

Measuring a curve with a piece of string
Both arcs
Run a string along the outer curve, then the inner curve. Mark each end, lay the string straight, measure it.
Depth in several places
Front to back at both ends and in the middle. Curved benches are rarely even.
The straight line
Measure end to end in a straight line across the back and across the front. That chord lets the workshop redraw the arc.
Thickness and splits
Pick a thickness, then let a long curve be cut into equal segments you can carry and store.
The fire pit bench, 245 inches around
A buyer in the US had a curved stone bench wrapped around an outdoor fire pit and measured it with a string. The workshop asked for more: the inner curve, the outer curve, the depth at several points, and the straight end-to-end distances, 142 in across the back and 117 in across the front.
From those numbers it drew the shape: 245 in on the outer curve, 208 in on the inner, 12 3/4 in deep, 3 in thick. That is about 20 feet of cushion. Nobody carries 20 feet of anything up from the garage, so it was cut into 4 symmetrical segments for handling and storage, in an outdoor weave close to heather beige. The fire pit bench sketches show more curves like it.
- Sizes
- Outer curve 245 in, inner curve 208 in, depth 12 3/4 in, chords 142 in and 117 in, 3 in thick, 4 pieces
- Fabric
- Outdoor weave in a heather beige tone
The lesson: For curves, give both arc lengths and the straight chord so the exact curve can be rebuilt.
For a curved outdoor bench cushion, give both arc lengths and the straight end-to-end chord; with those three numbers the exact curve can be redrawn.

Questions buyers ask next
Why pick charcoal over ivory for rooftop cushions?
A rooftop collects soot, wind-blown dust and standing water. A mid-charcoal solid hides grime and rain spotting far better than ivory, so the cushions look tidy between cleanings. Add one light lumbar if you miss the brightness.
Should outdoor back cushions be attached or loose?
Loose back cushions can be flipped as they fade, moved for a better lean, and carried in when a storm is forecast. If the wind on your roof is strong, ask for ties to the frame, placed where you mark them.
How thick should a curved fire pit bench cushion be?
The fire pit bench here was made 3 in thick at 12 3/4 in deep. For outdoor benches, 3 to 4 in is the usual recommendation: enough for long sitting without looking bulky on stone.
