A navy corduroy star floor cushion, and why its box wall matches the lowest shelf

Harlan reads a play corner from above: one dark star in a pale room, a box wall set level with the first cube of shelving, and the old truth that on the floor, the cushion is the chair.

Seen from above, the navy cord star fills the corner and leaves room for the canopy hem to fall behind it. As the only dark shape in a pale room, it pulls the play corner together.

The quick answer

A star floor cushion for a kids' corner works best with a deep, straight box wall, because on the floor the cushion's thickness is the whole seat height. Here the navy corduroy wall sits roughly level with the lowest cube of the shelf beside it, so books stay within reach. Cut every point on the same grain so the wale runs one way.

On the floor, the cushion is the chair

On the floor, the cushion is the chair. There is no frame to lend it height and no legs to fix a mistake. Whatever thickness you order is exactly how high a child sits.

So I look at this navy corduroy star floor cushion the way I'd look at a dining chair: from the side, with the tape out. Its box wall stands straight and deep, and it lines up, near enough, with the lowest cube of the white shelf beside it. Set a child on that star and the baskets and picture books are right at hand. Seat and storage make one calm line along the wall.

From above, where the photograph looks down, the star is the only dark shape in a pale gray-blue room, so the eye finds its five points first. The white canopy strung with fairy lights falls behind it and leaves the star its room. Proportion is not only height. It is how much floor a piece claims, and how much it leaves.

Pinned by Harlan

Five pins, from the grain of the navy cord to the rattan shade that warms the corner without adding a color.

  1. Navy cord star top

The wale runs one way across all five points, so every point panel has to be cut on the same grain.

  2. Box-edge star point

A straight box wall keeps each point crisp instead of letting it slump into a pillow shape.

  3. Blush cloud pillow

Picks up the pink skirting so the corner reads as one palette.

  4. Rattan dome pendant

A woven shade adds warm texture above the cool corduroy without adding another color.

  5. Cube shelf and baskets

Low storage beside the pouf keeps toys and books within reach of whoever is sitting.

Why the box wall and the grain do the work

A star is a hard shape to keep honest. Five points want to slump, and a soft, pillow-edged star goes round at the tips once it has been sat on awhile. A straight box wall holds each point crisp, the way a box cushion holds a square corner on a bench.

Corduroy asks one thing more. Its ribs run the same way across all five points, and that only happens when every point panel is cut on the same grain. Turn one panel and it catches the light a shade off; you'd see it every time you walked by. A seam is a promise, and so is a grain line.

The pillows earn their place. The blush velvet cloud repeats the pink skirting board, the white star pillow repeats the shelving, and the woven rattan pendant warms the ceiling without bringing in another color. The ceramic owl, pastel tins and felt pompoms stay on the shelves, off the seat.

To copy the room, my friend, take the darkest tone already in it, here the navy of the book spines, give it to the floor cushion, and keep everything above it light. For height numbers, see the floor cushion thickness guide; on ribs and nap, read corduroy wale and nap direction. More stars live among our star poufs, and the cloth is on the corduroy shelf. A real project

The studio, the tatami platform and the tape measure

A buyer in the US was moving into a small studio and wrote to the workshop with a proportion question of a bigger size: would the teddy floor sofa fit on a king-size tatami platform bed? The workshop confirmed the sofa measures 39 x 78 in (99 x 198 cm), and that its seat cushions laid side by side come to roughly a king-size bed.

The buyer did the sensible thing and waited to check the layout after moving in, with the real furniture standing.

I've watched more than fifty years of people buy for the room they imagine. Measure the room you have, with the bed and the shelves already in place. Floor pieces live or die by the inches around them.

Buyer questions: color numbers, loose bars, and a sofa that waited

  1. A common question

The green in your main photo is lovely. What number is it on the color chart?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop maps its photos to chart numbers. The green in the main window seat photo is ordered as Khaki; water green velvet is number 18, cream is number 13, and pink is number 27 (number 38 in another photo). When there's any doubt, it sends close-up photos.

  2. A common question

The metal pieces under our floor sofa keep coming apart when we sit down. Is there a version that doesn't need assembling?

    The workshop's answer

Yes: one-piece bars with the same structure and size need no assembly, and they have been offered as a full set, with the buyer covering the shipping. In past cases, bars that arrived defective were replaced, and after repeated fitting trouble one buyer was sent pre-assembled bars, so photograph any fault before you write.

  3. A common question

Can I order during the sale and have it shipped after I move in?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Place the order, give your date, and the workshop holds the shipment until then; it's a request it hears often. If your plans change, ask and it can be made and shipped right away instead.

On a floor cushion the thickness is the whole seat height, so set the box wall level with something the child uses, like the lowest shelf.

Questions buyers ask next

How deep should the box wall be on a kids' star pouf?

Deep enough to keep the five points crisp and to line up with something the child uses, like the lowest shelf or a low bookcase. On the floor that wall height is the seat height, so measure the corner before choosing.

What color should a floor cushion be in a pale, pastel kids' room?

Borrow the darkest tone already in the room, such as navy book spines, and give it to the floor cushion. One dark shape grounds the corner; keep the pillows and walls above it light so the eye settles.

Can a star floor cushion be a reading seat as well as a play seat?

Yes, when storage stands within reach. Here a cube shelf with baskets sits beside the star at about seat height, so a child can pull out a picture book or a toy without getting up.
