A navy corduroy lumbar pillow, read with the fingertips

Ink navy ribs between two mustard shams, on white board-and-batten in late gold sun. Corduroy is read with the hand before the eye.

Navy and mustard, a classic pairing, softened by corduroy ribs and afternoon sun.

The quick answer

A navy corduroy lumbar pillow is a plush, indoor-only rib cloth that needs no piping, because the ribs already draw the line, and its zippered cover washes at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle, then air dries. Corduroy shifts tone with nap and light, and browns and grays swing most, so order a swatch before a big set.

Why navy and mustard stay calm on this bed

Corduroy needs no piping, because every rib is already a line.

Ink navy and mustard sit almost opposite on the color wheel. In flat cotton they would shout like a college pennant. In corduroy each rib keeps a thin line of shadow, so the navy reads deeper and softer than its dye, and the pair turns calm.

The proportion is simple: a long, low lumbar at the front, a navy square standing behind it, and two mustard euro shams flanking both like open shutters. Three heights, one center line, no cord anywhere.

Late sun lays diagonal bars across the white board-and-batten and glints along the crowns of the ribs. The mustard is lifted from the honey oak headboard, so the shams seem to grow out of the wood. The shaded brass sconce is the warm top note, the candlestick repeats it lower down, and the books explain the lumbar: someone reads here.

Five pins, from the navy ribs to the brass light above the bed.

Pinned: Navy corduroy lumbar pillow and square between mustard shams on a white bed, oak headboard, board-and-batten wall
  1. Navy corduroy lumbar

Ribs soften the navy-and-mustard contrast so it does not feel sporty.

  2. Navy rib square

The navy square stands between the mustard shams as the center column.

  3. Mustard sham

Mustard matches the oak headboard tone, so the shams seem to grow out of the wood.

  4. Brass sconce

Shaded brass light adds the warm top note.

  5. Board-and-batten wall

White paneling keeps the backdrop crisp and catches diagonal sun.

Feel, wear, wash: a notebook page on corduroy

Feel. Plush under the palm, with a nap that brushes lighter one way and richer the other. Stroke against the ribs and the navy drops toward Prussian; smooth them back and it lifts to washed denim.

Wear. This is a polyester plush rib for indoor rooms, with no UV or water resistance, so keep it off the sun-baked window seat. On a bed, leaned on more than sat on, it keeps its face.

Wash. The cover unzips and goes in at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle, then air dries. No tumble dryer.

Match. Two corduroys with their naps crossed can look like two colors. Which way does yours brush lighter, my friends?

A real project

The brown that came home darker

A buyer in the US ordered brown corduroy covers for a floor sofa and wrote that the brown was much darker than the photographs.

The workshop said what I always say: daylight and screens can move a color by 5 to 10 percent, and browns and grays swing the most. Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does.

The buyer was not persuaded; that brown was not the brown they had pictured. So the workshop sent a replacement cover set in anthracite, at no charge. The buyer wrote back that it had arrived, delighted.

The lesson: Brown and gray corduroys shift the most between screen and room; get a swatch first.

Buyer questions: covers, toppers and cloth

  1. A common question

If I replace the covers on a modular floor sofa, what exactly comes in the cover set?

    The workshop's answer

    Two floor seat cushion covers at 78 x 39 x 6.5 in (200 x 100 x 17 cm) and two L-shaped backrest covers at 39 x 39 x 15 in (100 x 100 x 39 cm): both mattresses, both backrests.

  2. A common question

Could you make a flat custom sofa topper in white, 89 x 24 in, without the puffy quilted look?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The quilted topper is made to exact size and finishes much flatter than a heavy quilt. There are several whites, so give the code, note a medium fill, and write the exact size in the personalization box. Production plus delivery ran about 5 to 10 business days.

  3. A common question

What are your quilted sofa toppers and pet furniture protectors made of?

    The workshop's answer

They come in several fabrics, all shown on the product page: a soft fabric, velvet, teddy and a water-repellent outdoor fabric.

Navy and mustard in flat cotton look like a pennant; in corduroy every rib holds a line of shadow and the pair turns calm.

Questions buyers ask next

Why don't corduroy pillows have piping?

The ribs already draw straight lines across the face, so a cord in the seam would compete with them. Corduroy covers are made without piping; velvet and most other fabrics can take matching or contrast piping instead.

Can a corduroy lumbar pillow live on a porch?

No. The plush corduroy is an indoor cloth with no UV or water resistance. For a porch, patio or sunny window seat choose an outdoor acrylic, and keep corduroy for beds, sofas and reading corners.

Will a new corduroy pillow match one I bought last year?

Not always exactly. Fabric rolls can differ slightly in tone, and corduroy also shifts with nap direction. Ask for the same color code, order a swatch, and lay it beside the old pillow in daylight before committing.
