A Reading by RosaWindow Seat Cushions
A mustard window seat cushion, a sleeping terrier and a 96-inch decision
Rosa reads a long mustard window seat that a border terrier has claimed for the afternoon, then retells a buyer's 96-inch bench from first question to finished cushions.
SaveThe quick answer
A window seat cushion for a 96-inch bench is often easier to live with as three equal pieces than as one long one. A buyer with a 16 x 96 in (41 x 244 cm) bench chose three 16 x 32 in (41 x 81 cm) cushions that lift, flip and wash one at a time. One continuous cushion looks calmer; sections are kinder on cleaning day.
Page one: the bench, the dog and the question
Kids and dogs are the real quality control, and this window seat has already passed inspection. A border terrier is asleep in the middle of it, and on my porch nobody would dare wake him.
Start with proportion. The cushion runs the full length of a white paneled seat in one piece, and the self piping draws a single line from the curtains to the side table. On a long seat one unbroken line reads calm, the way a porch rail does.
The color is the clever part. Mustard sits within a shade of the terrier's wheaten coat, so the hair he leaves behind mostly disappears. Late sun through sheer linen pushes it toward ochre, and against white paneling it glows instead of shouting.
Every prop earns its place. Taupe and cream linen pillows wait at the far end for whoever sits upright. A dracaena in a stoneware crock stands tall at the other end to balance all that horizontal. The oak side table holds a crochet square with the hook still in it, and a basket of yarn waits nearby. That is a seat somebody uses every afternoon.
Before you choose a shade, hold the swatch against your dog. Browse performance and pet-friendly fabrics with the dog in the room, and read the honest limits in pet-friendly cushion fabric. What color is the fur on your window seat, neighbor?

Five pins follow the napping terrier, the long piping line, the two linen pillows, the dracaena and the crochet left on the side table.

The wheaten coat nearly matches mustard, a practical choice for a pet's favorite spot.
- Long piping line
Piping runs the full length and draws the eye along the seat.

Page two: a 96-inch bench, cut in three
A buyer wrote to the workshop about a window bench 16 in deep and 96 in long (41 x 244 cm). The question was the one I hear most about long seats: one cushion or several?
The choices came quickly. The buyer went with three pieces, each 16 x 32 in (41 x 81 cm), all in fabric #8, and no backrests. Three equal sections meant each cushion could be lifted, flipped and aired on its own, and a muddy paw would only take one of them out of service.
The result: three cushions one person can lift, and seams at an even 32 in (81 cm) rhythm, which is what keeps a split seat looking planned. It went straight into my notebook: split long window benches into equal sections so the cushions are easy to lift and flip. The one piece or two pattern shows where the splits go, and the bench cushion builder lets you try them first.
The notebook tally: one long cushion or three
| Question | One 16 x 96 in piece | Three 16 x 32 in pieces |
|---|---|---|
| Look | One unbroken piping line, like the photo | Two seams at even 32 in intervals |
| Lifting and flipping | A job for two people | One person, one cushion at a time |
| The dog's favorite end | The whole cushion takes the wear | Rotate the worn section to the quiet end |
| Cleaning day | Everything comes off at once | Only the muddy section comes off |
On the cutting table: the window seat in the photo
| Product | Window seat cushion, one long rectangle |
|---|---|
| Edge | Box edge |
| Piping | Self piping in the same mustard |
| Fabric | Performance weave, mustard with an ochre cast |
| Base | White paneled window seat |
| Pillows | Taupe linen and cream linen |
| Light | Late-afternoon sun through sheer linen curtains |
| The buyer's version | Three 16 x 32 in (41 x 81 cm) pieces on a 16 x 96 in (41 x 244 cm) bench |
| Best for | A sunny living-room window a pet has already claimed |

Buyer questions: navy stripes, angled seats and curved ends
- A common question
Which of your stripes is the darkest navy, and what would match a beige stripe with blue trim?
The workshop's answerN28 and N29 are the deepest navy-black stripes; N29 has thinner stripes, so its pattern looks denser. For a beige stripe body, N02 is the closest, finished with blue piping from the velvet and soft fabric charts, such as 131 deep navy or 907.
- A common question
Is an angled trapezoid cushion much more expensive than a plain rectangle?
The workshop's answerYes, noticeably. On one corduroy window seat of similar size, about 47 x 25 in (120 x 63.5 cm), the trapezoid version was quoted at roughly twice the price of the rectangle. If your seat could work as a rectangle, ask for both quotes.
- A common question
My sofa base curves. Can the cushion ends curve too, with the back longer than the front?
The workshop's answerYes. For a curved willow sofa the shop made a base cushion 32 in (81 cm) deep, 68 in (173 cm) along the back and 63 in (160 cm) along the front, with the ends curving between the two. It was 4 in (10 cm) thick, in linen color 14 with silicone filling.
Split a 96-inch window seat into three 32-inch cushions and each one lifts, flips and washes on its own, while the seams stay evenly spaced.

Questions buyers ask next
How long can one window seat cushion be before it should be split?
There is no fixed limit, but long seats are easier to handle in sections. A buyer with a 96 in (244 cm) bench chose three 32 in (81 cm) cushions, so each one lifts, flips and washes on its own and the seams stay evenly spaced.
What window seat cushion color hides dog hair best?
The shade closest to your dog's coat. In the photo, mustard sits near a wheaten terrier's color, so shed hair barely shows. Hold a swatch against the dog in daylight before ordering, because a color that matches on a screen can miss in the room.
Do the pillows on a window seat need to match the cushion?
No. Here two plain linen pillows in taupe and cream sit at one end and leave mustard as the only strong color. Pale, textured pillows give a place to lean without adding a second pattern.
Is self piping or contrast piping better on a long window seat?
Self piping, cut from the same fabric, draws one quiet line down a long seat, as in the photo. Contrast piping outlines each section more sharply, which suits a split seat when you want the divisions to show.
