A black pet-friendly window seat cushion, and where the money should go

Rosa reads a scruffy terrier's lookout over a city street and keeps a notebook of what's worth paying for, what isn't, and what costs nothing but a tape measure.

The quick answer

On a pet's window seat cushion, spend on a dark pet-friendly weave and a cushion that fills the full depth of the box, and save by keeping pale pillows at the wall. Going thinner rarely saves much, because price follows length and width far more than thickness.

Notebook, page one: a terrier, a street and a black cushion

Kids and dogs are the real quality control, and this wiry gray terrier is running the test right now. Mid-stretch, paws dug in, and the cover hasn't budged.

The seat is a honey pine storage box under a white tilt-and-turn window in a city apartment. The cushion is black, in a pebble-textured performance weave, and it fills the whole depth of the box. There's no ledge at the front for claws to catch on, and that one detail decides how long a window seat cushion lives.

Black hides muddy paws and street grime between cleans. On its own it could feel severe, so the room softens it: warm pine below, two oatmeal linen pillows at the wall, and a faded red vintage rug tying wood and black together at floor level. The pale pillows sit against the glass, away from paws, which is exactly where pale things stay clean. Who has claimed the window at your house: the dog, the cat or the kids?

A real project

The short cushion, the tape measure and the remake

A buyer got in touch with a two-piece seat: an inverted T-shaped cushion plus a rectangle, both at the same thickness, drawn out on a sketch. When the rectangle came, it measured 75 3/4 in (192.5 cm) instead of 77 1/8 in (196 cm).

They didn't fuss, bless them. They laid a tape measure along the cushion and sent a photo. The workshop apologized and remade it at the correct length.

That's the cheapest insurance in this whole notebook, neighbor. Measure every piece the day it arrives, and photograph the tape on the fabric if something's off. The Patterns on remaking a wrong-size cushion and size tolerance explain the rest, and pet-friendly cushion fabric covers the cloth.

Buyer questions: soft fabric, Canada and thin cushions

  1. A common question

What exactly is the soft fabric option made of?

    The workshop's answer

Everything on the soft chart is 100% polyester, a durable, easy-care upholstery weave with a soft hand. The covers are machine washable at 86°F (30°C), and it's one of the workshop's best-selling fabric families.

  2. A common question

Do you ship custom cushions to Canada, and what does delivery cost?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, cushions have been shipped to Canada. On one order shipping was free; for yours, the quote states the delivery cost.

  3. A common question

My cushions are pretty thin. Shouldn't they cost less than a 4-inch one?

    The workshop's answer

Send your dimensions first, because price depends mainly on length and width. A thin cushion still takes the same fabric, the same labor and the same quality materials, so thickness alone doesn't move the price much.

Questions buyers ask next

Why pick a black cushion for a dog's window seat?

Black hides muddy paws and street grime between cleanings, which matters most on a street-facing window a dog uses every day. Warm wood and pale pillows keep a dark seat from looking severe.

Should a window seat cushion fill the whole depth of the box?

Yes, especially with pets. A cushion that stops short leaves a ledge at the front where claws catch and the edge wears. Measure the box inside to inside and order the full depth.

Where should pale pillows go on a pet's window seat?

Against the window or the back wall, away from the front edge where paws land. You get the light, warm look of linen without washing the pillows every week.

What should I do if my custom cushion arrives the wrong length?

Lay a tape measure along it, photograph the tape on the fabric and send the photo. In one real case, a rectangle about 1 3/8 in (3.5 cm) short was remade at the correct length.
