One long window seat, two prints, and a year of changing light

Rosa reads an animal patchwork and a black tropical leaf sharing one bench, and follows the set-up from July glare to January gray.

The quick answer

A long window seat can carry two prints if the cushion is split at the wall between windows and both prints share colors, here black and caramel. Through the year, swap the pillows, not the cushions: camel velvet for winter warmth, ivory for summer air. Confirm each cushion's exact size and a numbered color before it is cut.

Swatch strip: six colors along one bench

  • Caramel#B7773FThe ground of the animal patchwork; it warms the white paneling.
  • Ink black#1E1C1AShared by both prints, so the handover from one to the other looks planned.
  • Camel velvet#A9804FThree pillows that carry the caramel down the whole length.
  • Ivory#EEE7DAThree plain pillows that rest the eye between busy patterns.
  • Burnt orange#CC6A2CA leaf color in the tropical print, strongest in summer sun.
  • Teal#2E7A76The cool note in the leaves, the one to lean on in August.

Two tastes, one bench, twelve months

Some households cannot agree on a paint color, never mind a print. This long window seat cushion settles it the neighborly way: split the bench into two cushions near the wall between windows and give each half its own fabric. One is a caramel and black patchwork of tiger and leopard. The other is multicolored leaves on black.

It works because the prints share their darkest and warmest notes. Black and caramel appear in both, so when one pattern hands over to the other, the eye reads a decision, not a mistake. The seam lands on solid wall rather than under a window, which helps too. Along the back, camel velvet and ivory pillows alternate, and that rhythm stitches the two halves together under the tall grid windows.

Tall windows mean this bench lives with the weather. In summer the soft white daylight turns bright and the tropical half takes over; orange and teal leaves look their best in strong sun. That is when I would put the camel velvet away and let the ivory pillows carry the back row, so the seat feels cool.

Come the gray months, reverse it. The camel velvet goes back in, the sheer linen curtains stay open for every scrap of light, and the caramel patchwork becomes the warm side of the room. A seat in full sun all year deserves a look at window seat cushion fading before you pick a dark ground. Where the split should fall is covered in long bench cushion: one piece or two, and more long seats live under window seat cushions and living room cushions. Which way does your window seat face?

A real project

A 25 x 17 in seat and velvet color 33

Not every window seat is a long one. A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a small window seat and asked for a 25 x 17 in (64 x 43 cm) cushion in beige velvet or chenille. The shop set up that exact size on its custom window seat listing and had her choose velvet color 33 from the chart: a numbered shade instead of a word like beige, which means ten different things to ten people.

When the cushion arrived she called it magnificent, a perfect fit and a perfect color. Nothing clever happened, neighbor. The size and the color number were confirmed before anyone cut, and that is the whole trick, on a small seat or a long one.

If one long window seat has to please two tastes, split the cushion at the wall between windows and let both prints share one color, like black.

Buyer questions: family fabrics, warm neutrals and tufted sizes

  1. A common question

How are custom tufted bench and window seat cushions priced?

    The workshop's answer

By size; ask for shipping to be spelled out in the quote. Quoted sizes have run from a 14 x 34 in bench cushion, through 22 x 70 in in velvet and 18 x 72 in, up to a 130 x 24 in bench at 4 in thick.

  2. A common question

Which fabric cleans up easiest for a family eating nook or a playroom?

    The workshop's answer

The shop points families to its soft fabric, which is durable and easy to clean, and suggested it over velvet for a children's playroom. For a light beige look, its smoke color is a beige-gray.

  3. A common question

Is linen L-02 gray or beige? I am after a warm off-white or natural.

    The workshop's answer

L-02, the best-selling fabric, is a warm cream or natural beige, with no gray in it and not a dark beige. For something whiter, L-01 is lighter. L-02, L-03 and L-04 are the beige tones on the linen chart.

Questions buyers ask next

Can two different prints share one window seat?

Yes, if they share at least one color and the split falls somewhere logical. Here black and caramel run through both prints and the cushions meet at the wall between windows, so the change reads as planned. Plain pillows in between give the eye a rest.

How do I change a window seat for summer and winter without new cushions?

Change the pillows. Heavier textures like camel velvet add warmth in the cold months, and lighter plain pillows in ivory keep the seat feeling cool in summer. The cushions stay put, so all you store is a few pillows.

Where should a long window seat cushion be split?

Over solid wall, not in the middle of a window. There the seam stays out of sight when you look out, and a change of fabric looks deliberate. Split into equal lengths when the run allows, so each cushion lifts and zips the same way.

Do animal prints work in a light, minimal room?

They do when the ground color is warm and everything else is quiet. A caramel patchwork against white paneling, oak floors and sheer linen reads as one strong note rather than clutter. Keep the pillows plain or velvet so the print does the talking.
