Three prints on one window seat, ordered right the first time

Pull up a chair. Three box cushions, three prints, one white bench, and a letter about getting your order right before a single stitch goes in.

The quick answer

To order a window seat cushion right the first time, send the exact end-to-end size, the thickness, and the fabric and piping code for every cushion in one message. Ask for the fabrics photographed side by side in different light before you commit. A long seat can be split: one 16 x 105 in window seat was made in two pieces.

Dear neighbor,

Thank you for the photograph of the bench. I have it propped against the sugar bowl on my porch table, and I keep smiling at it.

Here is what I see. A white paneled window bench between sheer linen curtains, and instead of one long cushion, three equal boxes sitting shoulder to shoulder. A mustard triangle print at the end nearest the light. A cheetah spot in the middle. A navy floral at the far end. Each one is piped in its own cloth, so the edges stay quiet and the prints do the talking.

The middle one is the peacemaker. The cheetah shares a gold note with the mustard and a darkness with the navy, so the row reads as one family and not three strangers waiting on the same bus. The warm pair sits by the window; the cool blue balances them at the far end.

Where my eye kept landing

Five spots on this bench I would point at over a glass of sweet tea.

  1. Mustard triangle cushion

The warmest of the three, placed at the end nearest the light.

  2. Cheetah spot cushion

Shares a gold note with the mustard, so the middle links the row.

  3. Navy floral cushion

The cool blue at the far end balances the warm pair.

  4. Pothos on the sill

A single plant is the only color outside the cushions.

  5. Linen floor pillow

Extra seating at floor level keeps the bench top uncluttered.

Why three cushions beat one long one

On a long seat, three shorter cushions are easier to lift, wash and rotate. When a grandbaby tips juice on the mustard, you unzip one cover, not the whole bench. And when you tire of a print, you replace a third of the seat.

Everything else in the picture stays linen and white on purpose: sheer curtains, a stack of books on folded linen, pale herringbone oak underfoot. The only color outside the cushions is one pothos on the sill. The big cream floor pillow has a job too. It is extra seating at knee height, so nobody piles onto the prints.

Three prints means three fabric codes and three piping codes, and that is where orders wander off. Put every code in one message, in the order the cushions sit, left to right. Then ask for the fabrics photographed side by side, in daylight and lamplight. My notes on that are in fabric swatches before ordering and what to write in a personalization note. The window seat cushions collection has more benches like this one.

A real project

The water-green seat that ran 105 inches

A buyer in the US wrote with one tidy line: a 16 x 105 in window seat cushion, in water green. That is nearly 9 feet of seat. The workshop answered that it would be made in two pieces, sent the quote with a custom order link, and the buyer ordered right away.

Why so smooth? The very first message already held the depth, the length and the color. No back-and-forth, no guessing, no week of "which green did you mean?" I have had orders on my own porch take longer to settle than that one took to finish.

The lesson: A long, narrow window seat can be made in two halves that sit neatly end to end.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Do you have a photo of a finished cushion in the exact fabric and piping I picked?

    The workshop's answer

Often there isn't one in that exact combination, so the workshop photographs the fabrics side by side, for example a green next to two possible piping colors, and sends extra shots in different lighting. Whole-cushion or from-a-distance photos are not always available, so physical samples are the safest way to judge a color for your own room.

  2. A common question

What thickness and foam would you pick for a seat we use every single day?

    The workshop's answer

For everyday seating, 4 in (10 cm) with the high-density 32 kg/m³ foam: soft enough to be comfortable, firm enough to keep its shape. 4 in is also the pick for a tailored built-in window seat, and 3 to 4 in for outdoor benches. Because the foam is firm, cushions of 2 to 2 1/2 in still stay supportive, which suits dining nooks.

  3. A common question

We have two cats. Which fabric are they least likely to scratch?

    The workshop's answer

Choose from the pet-friendly chart. Those fabrics are tightly woven, less attractive to claws and more durable against them.

Put every fabric code in one message, in the order the cushions sit on the bench, left to right, and a three-print window seat arrives right the first time.

Questions buyers ask next

Can I mix different prints on one window seat?

Yes. Order each cushion as its own piece with its own fabric and piping code. Prints that share one color, like the gold running through the mustard and the cheetah here, keep a row of three from looking random.

Will a very long window seat cushion come in one piece?

Not always. A 16 x 105 in window seat cushion was made in two pieces, which sit neatly end to end. Send your size and the workshop will tell you whether it splits and where.

What should my first message to the workshop include?

The exact size end to end, the thickness, the fabric and piping code for each cushion, and a photo of the seat. For any shape that isn't a rectangle, add a simple drawing with every edge labeled.

Do the covers come off for washing?

Yes. The covers are zippered and removable and can go in the machine on a gentle 86°F (30°C) cycle. With three separate cushions, you only wash the one that met the juice.

P.S. Keep your fabric codes on a sticky note inside a kitchen cabinet door. The day you want to swap one print, you will thank yourself.
