Three printed window seat cushions piled high, and the measuring mistakes to skip

Three prints, one bench, one black thread running through them all. Before anybody picks a favorite, though, the seat has to be measured, and that is where most of the trouble starts.

The quick answer

To measure a window seat cushion, take the bench top wall to wall, the depth from the back wall to the front edge, and the thickness you want, and write the unit beside every number. Mixing up inches and centimeters is one of the costliest ordering mistakes. Once the foam size is right, printed covers can take turns with the seasons.

Swatch strip: one black ground, three moods

  • Diamond white#EEEDE8The quietest print: black and white diamonds.
  • Floral orange#D9692BTropical flowers on black, the middle step.
  • Graffiti pink#E8398CThe loudest print, neon on the same black.

Pinned by Rosa: diamonds, flowers, graffiti, linen and the bench

Five pins climb the stack from quiet to loud, then step back to the pillow and the plain white bench holding it all up.

  1. Diamond geometric

Black-and-white diamonds with cream piping, the quietest of the three.

  2. Dark tropical floral

Orange and cream flowers on black, a middle step in intensity.

  3. Neon graffiti

The loudest print at the bottom, sharing the same black ground.

  4. Linen pillow

One neutral pillow keeps the focus on the fabric choice.

  5. Paneled bench

A plain white seat base that works under any of the three.

From quiet to loud, and the four cushion numbers under all three

Pull up a chair. Three box cushions are piled on a white paneled window bench like pancakes, and they climb in volume from top to bottom. On top, black-and-white diamonds outlined in cream piping. In the middle, orange and cream tropical flowers on black. At the bottom, neon graffiti in hot pink, the loudest thing in the room.

What lets them share a bench is the ground. All three prints sit on black, so the eye reads one family with three moods instead of three strangers. A single cream linen pillow leans in the corner and keeps quiet, which is its whole job. The tall white window, the pale overcast light and the herringbone oak floor stay out of the argument.

The teenagers on my porch would pick the graffiti. My mother would have picked the diamonds. Which one would you leave on top?

Here is the part nobody photographs. Under any of those covers, the foam has to fit this exact seat, so measure it like this:

  • Length: the bench top wall to wall, at the back and again at the front. Old cushions squash, so trust the wood.
  • Depth: from the back wall to the front edge of the bench top, and decide whether the cushion stops flush.
  • Trim: if a sill or window casing sticks out above the seat, note its height so the thickness clears it.
  • Units: write in or cm beside every single number.

Get the foam right once and the prints can take turns. The window seat cushions in the Atlas and the living room collection show more ways to dress one.

A real project

The quote that read inches as centimeters

A buyer in the US sent measurements for three trapezoid window seats, all in inches. The first quote went out, and then the workshop caught its own mistake: it had read the inches as centimeters. An inch is 2.54 centimeters, so every cushion was far bigger than first priced, and the corrected total more than doubled.

Nobody enjoyed that week. After some back-and-forth they settled on a price with inserts, made the cushions 3 in (7.6 cm) thick instead of 2.5 in (6.4 cm), and paid in full upfront, since split payments aren't offered. The body fabric was L-07, with L-02 in ivory for the piping.

The ending? The buyer loved them. But I have written the lesson on every drawing since, neighbor: put the unit next to every number. Our pattern for measuring a window seat and the notes on window seat cushion thickness are the two I would read first.

Buyer questions: off-white linen, a wall board and several rooms at once

  1. A common question

Is the L-01 linen a bright white or an off-white? I'd rather not have stark white.

    The workshop's answer

For a natural off-white instead of white, the workshop recommends L-02. One 19 x 30 in (48 x 76 cm) cushion was quoted in it for a buyer who wanted exactly that softer shade.

  2. A common question

Could you make an upholstered wall board in the same fabric as my daybed cushion?

    The workshop's answer

The style in the buyer's photo had a wooden board inside, which isn't made here as standard. The workshop offered a foam-filled backrest without wood instead; it looks softer than a board, and that buyer planned to fix it to the wall with velcro.

  3. A common question

Can I get one quote for window seat cushions in several rooms?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Six custom window cushions for three rooms were once quoted together, and that quote included shipping. When the buyer decided to start with one room, the quote covered two 78 x 26.5 in (198 x 67 cm) cushions, and the others could follow later.

Write the unit next to every number on a window seat drawing; one set of three trapezoid cushions was first quoted with inches read as centimeters.

Questions buyers ask next

Why do different prints look good stacked together?

A shared ground color. Here all three prints sit on black, so the diamonds, the floral and the graffiti read as one family in three moods. Keep the bench and the extra pillow plain so the prints are the only voices.

What measuring mistake should I watch for on a window seat drawing?

Numbers without units. One set of three trapezoid cushions was first quoted with inches read as centimeters, and the corrected total more than doubled. Write in or cm beside every figure on the drawing, including the thickness.

Can I swap printed covers on the same window seat foam?

Yes, as long as each cover is cut to that foam's exact size. Measure the seat once, order the insert, then order extra covers to the same length, depth and thickness so every print fits the same way.
