A denim corduroy window seat cushion, ordered right the first time

The messages come first this time, because good messages make good cushions. Then a steel denim seat under a garden window.

Denim blue corduroy gives a cream room a relaxed, lived-in accent that works across seasons.

The quick answer

Order a custom window seat cushion in codes: the body fabric code, a separate piping code, and the direction ribs or stripes run on the top and the side edges. Add every measurement, with angled sides listed one by one, and the thickness. Then treat linen-look fabric as the synthetic it is and iron it on low.

Buyer questions

Good questions, asked clearly. The answers are the workshop's.

  1. A common question

Can you make my exact size, or do I have to pick one of the sizes on the menu?

    The workshop's answer

Any size can be made. The sizes on the menu are really price ranges: pick the range that covers your measurements and write your exact size in the personalization box. Sizes below the smallest option work too, like 9 in wide when the menu starts at 12 in.

  2. A common question

What's the standard thickness, and can I go thicker or thinner?

    The workshop's answer

The standard is 4 in (10 cm), and most buyers find it comfortable. The workshop has also made 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 in; thicker cushions cost more.

  3. A common question

Roughly what does a custom window seat cushion cost?

    The workshop's answer

Quotes are by size. A small square pad and a long 86 in bench cushion sit at opposite ends of the range, so send your exact measurements for a figure, and ask whether shipping is in it.

A real project

The orange bench, and what a photo before shipping caught

A buyer in the US who comes back to the workshop often had a set of orange corduroy cushions photographed before they shipped. Good thing. In the photos, the side edges didn't show the vertical ribs she'd seen in the product pictures. She said so, and the cushions were remade in 2 days.

Her next project was a symmetrical angled bench, its sides breaking into runs of 1.5, 12 and 9.5 in, ordered through the 21.5 x 68 in size option. The order named the fabric and trim by code, L-82 in orange with L-43 trim, and the cushion fitted perfectly.

Then she ironed it. The linen was a linen-look synthetic, and the cover melted under a hot iron. A replacement cover went out at a reduced price with new L5 piping. Kids and dogs are the real quality control, neighbor, but a hot iron comes close.

21.5 x 68 in (55 x 173 cm), angled sides 1.5 / 12 / 9.5 in

The lesson: Linen-look fabrics are synthetic, so iron only on low heat; check the rib or stripe direction on the side edges too.

Five lines to send with a corduroy window seat order

  • The fabric code for the body, and a separate code for the piping
  • Which way ribs or stripes run on the top and on the side edges
  • Every measurement, inches first, angled sides listed one by one
  • Your exact size in the personalization box
  • The thickness as a number; 4 in is standard

A plain white box, and the only blue in the room

Morning light, a cream room, a white box bench under a sash window with the garden beyond. Then one steel denim corduroy cushion, and suddenly the plain box is the first thing you see. It's the only saturated color in the frame.

Everything else takes a side. The framed botanical print and the potted plant repeat the greens outside the glass. The oak side table, with its books and eucalyptus, and the jute rug hold the warm side. Blue at the center, oak and green at the ends: that balance is why the corner feels settled instead of staged.

Look at the proportion. The cushion is about a third of the box's height, generous without pushing the seat too high. If your base is plain white, a mid-blue corduroy is one of the easiest colors to live with: it hides wear and suits oak or painted floors. What color is the box under your window? More built-ins live under window seat cushions.

Five things that make a white box look finished.

Pinned: Steel denim blue corduroy box cushion on a white bench under a sash window, oak side table and jute rug in a cream room
  1. Denim blue corduroy

The only saturated color in the frame, so the plain box becomes the focal point.

  2. Botanical print

Green line art repeats the garden outside and softens the cream wall.

  3. Oak side table

Warm oak balances the cool blue on the opposite side of the seat.

  4. Potted plant

Greenery at both ends frames the bench symmetrically.

  5. Jute rug

Natural fiber keeps the palette relaxed and warm.

Linen-look cushion fabric is synthetic, so iron it on low heat only. One linen-look window seat cover melted under a hot iron.

Questions buyers ask next

Why give fabric codes instead of color names?

Color names drift: one person's denim is another's slate. A code points to one exact fabric, so write the body code and the piping code separately and the cushion comes back as you pictured it.

Which way should corduroy ribs run on a cushion?

Say it for the top and for the side edges. A set of orange corduroy cushions was remade because the side ribs didn't match the vertical ribs the buyer had seen in the product photos.

Is a mid-blue cushion practical on a white bench?

Yes. A mid-blue corduroy hides everyday wear better than cream, sits well with oak or painted floors, and on a plain white base it becomes the focal point of the corner.
