Mustard, rust and navy corduroy: a custom bench cushion stack and the mistakes it prevents

Three finished cushions on an oak table. It is the most honest color chart I know, and it quietly corrects half the errors I see in orders.

Stacked together, the mustard, rust and navy corduroys show how the same wide wale reads in three warm-to-deep shades. Every cushion is finished with self piping top and bottom.

The quick answer

The surest way to choose a corduroy bench cushion color is to compare finished cushions, not flat swatches: stacked, you see ribs, piping and depth together. Mustard is the lightest and shows rib shadows most, navy is the practical pick for busy benches and pets, and rust sits between. Order the seat in the shade nearest your darkest large item.

Why a stack beats a swatch card

Three corduroy bench cushions, box-edged and stacked on a pale oak tabletop against a warm gray wall: mustard on top, rust in the middle, navy at the bottom. No room, no styling, nowhere to hide.

That is the point. A flat swatch shows you a color. A finished cushion shows you the ribs, the piping and the depth together, and corduroy changes with every one of those. Mustard is the lightest and shows the rib shadows most clearly. Navy is the deepest. Rust sits between them, warm like mustard and deep like navy, so the stack reads as a gradient rather than three strangers.

Every cushion is piped top and bottom in its own cloth, and the corners are softly rounded under the welt. No sharp dog-ears. That rounding tells you the foam inside is wrapped, not a bare block. Every welt on the stack runs straight.

Settle the size first in the bench cushion builder, then choose the color against the room itself. What is the darkest large thing in your room?

  1. Mustard cushion

Mustard is the lightest of the three and shows the rib shadows most clearly.

  2. Rust cushion

Rust sits between the two, warm like mustard and deep like navy, which is why the trio works.

  3. Navy cushion

Navy is the practical pick of the three for busy benches and homes with pets.

  4. Rounded piped corner

Corners are softly rounded under the piping, so the cushion never shows sharp dog-ears.

  5. Lower piping bead

Each cushion is piped top and bottom, the same finish whichever color you choose.

Five mistakes this photograph prevents

  • Choosing corduroy from a flat swatch alone. Ribs catch light differently on a finished edge, so compare made-up cushions or close-up photos.
  • Putting the lightest shade on the hardest-working bench. Navy is the practical pick for busy benches and homes with pets; mustard is the lightest of the three.
  • Matching the seat to the room you wish you had. Match it to the darkest large item you own, a sofa or the floor, and put the lighter shades on pillows.
  • Expecting knife-sharp corners on a box cushion. These corners are softly rounded under the piping, so they never show empty tips.
  • Forgetting to mark the odd end. On an angled bench, say which end slants and by how much, on a drawing.
A real project

Fifty-seven inches under the stairs, angled at one end

A buyer got in touch needing a 57 x 27 in (145 x 69 cm) seat pad for an understairs bench. One end was angled where the bench met the stairs, and they wanted no handle on it.

The workshop asked for a link to the bench model and the sizes, then sent beige and cream options from the full color chart.

I once cut a lovely cushion with the angle on the wrong end, dear, so take it from me. Right, then: draw the bench from above, mark which end slants and by how much, and write the word stairs on that side. It takes two minutes. The custom shape drawing Pattern shows the labels, and there are more understairs bench cushions to learn from.

Cleaning, backrests and a difficult corner

  1. A common question

Which of your fabrics is easiest to keep clean?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop's velvet is very easy to clean. The soft fabric used on the custom French-style tufted bench cushion is easy to clean as well.

  2. A common question

Can I add another L-shaped backrest to our ottoman later, or a straight piece between two corner backrests?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. An extra L-shaped backrest turns an ottoman into a small sectional, and it can be bought later through the same link. A straight 39 in (99 cm) cushion to sit between two corner pieces was quoted too.

  3. A common question

Our corner window seat has small trim sections at both corners. Can the cushion extend onto them?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, though it is a genuinely difficult piece, and the workshop gave it to its most experienced craftsman. Complex shapes like this are paid through a private purchase link made for your order, which works like any normal checkout.

Stacking finished corduroy cushions is the most honest way to compare colors, because the ribs, the piping and the depth show together instead of on a flat swatch.

Questions buyers ask next

Is corduroy a good fabric for an indoor bench cushion?

Yes. The ribs give it depth and a soft hand, and a box cushion with self piping keeps it tailored. Choose the shade by how hard the bench works: navy is the practical choice for busy benches and pets, mustard for a quieter spot.

Why are the corners of these corduroy cushions rounded?

They are softly rounded under the piping, so the cushion never shows the sharp, empty tips people call dog-ears. The rounding comes from the foam being wrapped before it goes into the cover, rather than sitting in it as a bare block.

Should corduroy piping match the cushion or contrast with it?

Both work. Self piping in the same corduroy, as on this stack, gives a quiet tailored edge. A contrast welt, such as navy on mustard or rust on teal, draws the outline harder and suits a bench you want noticed.

What should I send for an angled or understairs bench?

A drawing from above with every side measured, the angled end marked and how far it slants. Add a link to the bench model if there is one. For a 57 x 27 in understairs seat, the model and the sizes were the first things asked for.
