What piping color goes best with my cushion fabric?

A straight welt is a kind of honesty, and a well-chosen one is a kind of tact. Here are the pairs the workshop has actually suggested, laid out side by side.

The quick answer

The best piping color depends on your body fabric and your room, and the workshop will suggest pairs and send photos before you decide. Proven pairings include cream piping on T-314, forest green 125 on burnt terracotta velvet 112, P-55 on velvet P-59, and P-58 on P-56 for beige and brown rooms. For true cream, choose L-02 over the yellower L-20.

Cream is not one color

A buyer wanted piping as close to true cream as possible and picked L-20. The workshop steered them to L-02: L-20 leans yellow, and L-02 reads as a clean cream. The order went through as burnt terracotta velvet 112 with L-02 piping once the buyer approved.

That's the whole method in one exchange. Name the look you want, let the workshop suggest the code, and see a photo of the two together before you commit. A cream on a screen isn't always a cream in the room, so check a fabric swatch in daylight if you can. Matching, contrast or none at all is weighed in cushion piping choices.

Choosing in five minutes

  • Match or contrast? About half of orders go each way. Self piping is the low-risk choice.
  • Beige and brown room? Go earthy rather than gray.
  • Want a quiet outline? Take the code one shade darker than the body.
  • Outdoors, choose same-fabric piping; it reinforces the edges.
  • Ask for photos of the pair. The workshop sends them.

For true cream cushion piping, linen L-02 beats L-20, which leans yellow. Ask for a photo of the pair before anything is cut.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Which piping color would suit my main fabric?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop suggests combinations and sends example photos: cream with T-314 for a soft contrast, tone-on-tone green or a contrasting gold with chenille E18, forest green 125 with burnt terracotta 112.

  2. A common question

What piping goes with velvet P-59, and what if my house is all beige and brown?

    The workshop's answer

P-55, a light gray, was the best match suggested for P-59, though any color can be used. For a beige-and-brown home the workshop recommended earthy tones instead, a P-56 body with P-58 piping, and sent photos of the pair.

  3. A common question

What piping would work on a brown striped fabric?

    The workshop's answer

For the textured brown stripe N33: self-fabric piping for a clean, seamless look, cream or beige for a classic contrast, or dark brown or black for a sharper, framed look.

  4. A common question

Where do I find the piping color chart?

    The workshop's answer

There isn't a separate one. Piping can be made from any fabric on any of the charts, 150+ options. Use the body's code to match or another code to contrast.

Questions buyers ask next

Does piping cost extra?

No. Piping or no piping is a style choice at the same price. Piping gives crisp, tailored edges; leaving it off keeps them soft and clean.

Can a modular floor sofa have contrast piping?

Modular floor sofas come with a flat seam by default. Write your preference in the personalization note; contrast trim on pillows can also be left off.

Should the buttons match the piping?

Not necessarily. Buttons can be made in the cushion fabric's color rather than the piping color, which keeps a tufted top calm when the edge contrasts.
