The mustard play sofa, and how many small guests it holds
Two ochre slabs, a backrest, two bolster arms and three pale pillows. A kids' floor sofa is the best host in a child's room when you ask it to do only what it can.
Swap the round back pillows for novelty shapes and the same play sofa becomes the bedroom's centerpiece.
The quick answer
A kids' floor sofa seats a playdate well when the base is low, the pillows are loose and the colors stay simple. Here two mustard corduroy slabs form the seat, bolster arms hold the children at the ends, and three pale shaped pillows move to the rug when more guests arrive. Keep a real chair nearby for adults.
Ochre is the host, the pillows are the guests
A play sofa does not need to be tall to seat a whole playdate. It needs to be low, soft at the edges, and easy to take apart.
This kids' floor sofa is two slabs of mustard ochre corduroy under a backrest, with a bolster at each end. There is no piping. The box edges are plain, so the ribs of the fabric draw the only lines.
Look at the pillows. A white cloud. A daisy with a yellow center. A cream round with a scalloped edge and small dots. All three are light, so against the saturated ochre their outlines read clearly from the doorway.
The daisy's center belongs to the same yellow family as the sofa. That one small repeat is why a novelty pillow looks planned rather than picked up on the way home.
Pinned by Hana: five marks on the play sofa
Five pins follow the sofa from the cloud pillow down to the two-slab base, and say why each piece is light, low or loose.

- Cloud pillow
A plush white cloud pops against ribbed ochre because the textures differ, not only the colors.
- Daisy pillow
The yellow center repeats the sofa color, so the novelty pillow looks planned.
- Dotted scalloped pillow
A third light pillow completes the row without adding a new color.
- Mustard bolster arm
The bolster in the same corduroy keeps the silhouette clean under busy pillows.
- Two-slab base
A bold color on the big base slabs is where the room gets its warmth.

Seating a playdate on the floor
When friends come over, the sofa changes shape. The pillows go to the rug. The bolsters become backrests for the two children at the ends. The slabs stay together as one long bench.
Children measure comfort with their whole body. They lie across a floor sofa, climb its back and sit on its arms. A mid-tone corduroy forgives small shoes and sticky hands better than a pale flat weave, and the rib gives restless fingers something to follow.
Keep the rest of the room quiet. The walls are sage, the rug is jute, the table and chairs are pine. When the sofa is bold, every accessory on it stays within one light neutral.
How many small guests does your floor usually hold? Count them before you choose the number of slabs. The size-by-age Pattern helps with the rest.
Low for the children. Loose for the guests. A chair for the grown-ups.
The guest who needed 20 inches
A buyer in the US ordered a tufted floor seating set for visiting guests and asked for extra padding so people would sit higher.
The padding would have taken the set from 16 in (41 cm) to 20 in (51 cm), measured from the floor to the top of the backrest. But the buyer needed a seat at 20 in, not a backrest. Padding could not do that, so it was canceled.
When the set arrived, the tufting buttons were white rather than the dark brown in the photos. The workshop offered brown button covers. The buyer still felt the set was not right for them and sent it back.
The lesson is height. Floor seating cannot reach chair height. If a guest needs an upright seat, give them a chair, and let the floor sofa do what it does well. The Pattern on raising a floor sofa shows what is realistic.
Buyer questions: an alcove, a rust question, a tiny house
- A common question
Could the modular play sofa with a backrest be sized for a 48-inch alcove between two closets in my toddler's room? We don't need the fold-out.
The workshop's answerYes. The workshop asked for a hand sketch of the 48 in (122 cm) alcove and a few inspiration photos, reviewed them, and came back with options to fit the space.
- A common question
Is your Brick color closer to orange or to rust? I'm matching a designer teddy sofa, and I'd also like a cream-white option.
The workshop's answerBrick sits closer to rust than to orange. For a cream-white look, the workshop's off-white is the match, and photos of both were sent so the buyer could decide together with their partner.
- A common question
I need a frameless floor sofa for a tiny house on wheels. How big is your sofa-style model?
The workshop's answerFor a single straight sofa with no side return, the workshop suggested its modular corduroy floor sofa: 78.5 in (199 cm) wide, 39 in (99 cm) deep and 29 in (74 cm) high, with a 14 in (36 cm) seat height.

On a mustard corduroy play sofa, keep every pillow white or cream so the cloud and daisy shapes read clearly from across the room.

Questions buyers ask next
Where do the loose pillows go when more children pile onto a play sofa?
Onto the rug. Shaped pillows become floor seats or backrests for the extra guests, while the base slabs stay together as one long bench and the bolster arms keep the children at each end from rolling off.
Why are all the novelty pillows on the mustard play sofa white or cream?
A saturated ochre is a busy background. Light pillows in one neutral family keep their cloud, daisy and scalloped outlines readable, and the daisy's yellow center repeats the sofa color so the set looks chosen together.
Can a kids' floor sofa give adult guests a chair-height seat?
No. Floor seating sits far below a dining or desk chair. In one buyer's case, extra padding would only have raised a set from 16 in (41 cm) to 20 in (51 cm) at the top of the backrest, so keep a real chair nearby.
